[A brief history of Provincial Highway 18 Alishan Highway]
As early as the Qing Dynasty, there were roads between Chiayi and Chukou. It was not until the Japanese occupation period that the Japanese government built Zhuqi Xingao Road (via Cross Road, Alishan), Chiayi Cross Road (via Shanmei, Lijia, Dabang) and other roads. The road goes deep into the Dali Mountains.
In 1978, Taiwan's highways were reorganized for the second time. The Nationalist Government's plan to build the "New Central Cross Highway" included the Chiayi Yushan Line and the Yuli Yushan Line. To put it simply, after this road is opened, it can run from Chiayi City, through Alishan and Yushan to Yuli Town, Hualien County, with a total length of about 209 kilometers.
In the 1960s, logging in Alishan had stopped, and the forest railway trains gradually stopped transporting wood. However, as more and more tourists came to the mountain, the Chiayi County Government used various resources from the United Nations to build a road that can reach the crossroads. , but in the end Taiwan withdrew from the United Nations, and the Cross Road-Alishan section was handed over to the provincial government for construction. It was opened to traffic in 1974, and Chiayi-Alishan finally had a direct highway.
The Chiayi Yushan Line was opened to traffic on September 30, 1982. The original plan of the "New Central Cross Highway" was to run directly from Yushan to Yuli. However, due to the establishment of Yushan National Park, based on environmental protection and ecological conservation, Provincial Highway 18 was added to the Tatata line from Mt. Construction of the wind section was announced to be suspended, and the final Provincial Highway 18 only ended at Tatajia.
