Mike, curious if you had the crank balanced? I have a cast 74mm AA crank that I'm building with the 88 pistons. This won't be run over 4500 running factory F.I.

Why did you choose to go with a 74MM crank? Was it the biggest you felt comfortable using with a mag case?
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 2 жыл бұрын
for reliability yes. You can machine your mag case to run a larger crank. But you should also put shuffle pins in the center main plus you take a lot of support out of that case. Best if your going bigger to go with aluminum IMO. already machined for larger crank. Better more stable material.

Is the holleyweber carburetor still a thing? Haven't messed with vw's in a very long time, but hasn't something better come along yet? I absolutely hated the holley weber when I had one -- it never ever never ran right, ever, no matter what I did -- trashed it, went for duals & they were awesome.

well They had a long galley running parallel to its base that would hold trash - it was kind of like the idle restrictor on the pic3s. hard to clean.

I hated those when my brother did a complete engine overhaul for my 71 Westi Camper. Not enough CFM for a 3,000 lb vehicle. But my oxidized chalkboard green camper would out accelerate the newer VW vans. Got the funniest looks! My brother modified the carb for the secondaries to open together. Made it too snappy cause the secondaries opened faster. Broke the clutch springs. Should’ve went with the 48 Weber my bro recommended. In the late 70’s it was pricey in that economic era, now it’s ridiculous. My bro had a Ghia doing low 16’s at the quarter mile while getting 28 mpg. Trans work close ratio 3 &4. My main ride was a 57 Porsche, drove that in high school, Those were the days! Thanks for the video, memories!

I really been wanting to do a 74x88 thick wall..
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
yea we talked about that in the next video coming up on this build. That engine would be super strong running. It needed a line bore so I had them cut it to do 90.5. In hind sight I may have run a 1800 74 x88 which is a great combo for less machine work.

@@Mikefngarage I'm building that 1800 now I'm buying Panchito 044 head's I was told not to do anything to them just use them straight out the box with a Engle cheater cam . What do you think about this setup and would you port these head's?✌️
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
@@charlesmartin7347 the ports are already pretty much modified. they could be wedge ported but I would just leave them like they are. They already have a slight wedge port Should run good. FK7? cheater. 1.25 rockers. 1.4s can be pretty tricky to get the geometry right. may hit the stretch tubes.

How much money it topically cost to build a engine with a new case?
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
usually 3 to 4 thousand for a all new engine parts build. If you go bigger than that it is more depending on some things.

doesn't anyone make a belt drive or cloyes chain type drive for the VW camshaft ?it would seem to me that something like that would goa long way to reducing harmonics in the valvetrain. it did wonders on our 500 inch pro stock engines

I think we got a 4340 but yea they are the way to go instead of counterweight 69 just a few bucks more and you get much more power. Try the 88 thick wall upgrade with the aa 40x35 valves OMG super fast then.

I have done 2054 (94x74) and I found even with 94s I had to clearence the roof of the case and barely the end of the jugs. With your clearanced rods does it stay away from the jugs and case?

Lost a rod bearing in the baja we bought. Being new to bugs I started watching all kinds of these videos. After taking the engine out and breaking it down. We learned it was a 1835 thick wall. Now it's turning into a 1968 and I'm stoked. Thank you for making these build videos.

If you use stock rods on the 74, how much barrel shims do you need
@scottpella7419
@scottpella7419 4 жыл бұрын
That will depend on the case you are using. Every engine is different, was the case decked? You have to check your deck height once everything is assembled, then adjust with barrel shim if needed to dial in your compression ratio and type of fuel used where you live, or what kind of head you are using. Hope that helps.
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
we went short rods for less barrel shims. But our chambers were low cc so I had to go 70 on the deck. Which I like a 50 to 60 deck. Less barrel fire which causes detonation. We are opening the heads right now so we can even do 70. 9.1 to 1 right now gotta bring it down to 8.75 or less. That is why I like the AA 40x35 heads they have huge chambers. you can cut them down if you need to. but that is easier than opening them up believe me.

with the carb on it probably around 100 or so. if you put duals on it much more than that. Would like full running 40s on it to make it fast.

I would really love to see and hear about the cost breakdown!!! 1. All parts cost 2. Labor in hours 3. Machine shop costs Also a cost per HORSEPOWER ! How much does it cost to make 100 hp, 200hp, 300 hp ????? Great video content by the way !!! I've watched all of VWDarrins vids and EZGZ's other than you guys there isn't a lot of watchable content out there. Keep it up... I'd love to see a type 4 and a VW flat 6 as rare as they are !

Great video. I’ve been wondering. Why do they put three shims in to set the end float and what effect it would have if you used more or maybe less?
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
vws need to have a certain deck height. Usually between 50 and 60 minimum. some guys run as little as 35 thousands. But I wont go there. you use a compression ratio calculator to determine what compression ratio you want to run with a CC combustion check. Need to do all that on these engines to make sure they dont run too hot.
@mysterymonkey
@mysterymonkey 4 жыл бұрын
Ah no I was talking about crank end float!
@Mikefngarage
@Mikefngarage 4 жыл бұрын
yea sorry I was reading through these pretty fast. They need the shims to have the crankshaft pulled to the front of the car. because they are not flanged and the way the rods are configured. the shims keep tension to the flywheel side. 3 shims is to make sure they slide against each other. Some german engineering technique. Not good to second guess them. There is a reason But I dont know why. just like you need 9 shims total on the fan belt pulley or it will crack.
