whoa! But I mean about Russian politeness Natasha left out the nuance: there are two form of "you" in Russian : the first is direct and the second is polite-distance and they are followed by verbs with different endings , for example, "give": [day]- direct , and [dayTE]-indirect , but the 'devil ' is lost in English translation...

My graduation paper was an attempt to talk about different types of communication/polite expressions/politeness in general in these two cultures in question. So, to me, this conversation is absolutely fascinating. Thank you both so very much, my friends. Luke’s English podcast is simply sensational, there’s no other word for it 😉🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍

It's quite flattering that Luke and Natasha spent some time discussing Russian etiquette. However, I found a fly in this ointment. There is a taint of generalisation in what Natasha said, or I might have missed something. Of course, the Russians are not so advanced in politeness as the British, but even for my ear the phrase "Give me a cup of tea" may sound impolite in some circumstances. I would say this is a rather informal way of asking something despite our barbaric background. I'm fairly sure that this suggestion of using this form of asking was merely an act of courtesy to a person who was struggling to pronounce Russian words. Educated and well mannered people would probably say "Could you give me..." rather than a blunt "Give me..." The majority of cafe and bar regulars are young people, and, considering the fact that most of the waiters are young people as well, it's more likely to hear in such places casual "Gimme cappuccino" instead of "Could you (possibly) give me...", which you can expect in more formal situation. I don't think it's simple as that and depends on different factors, and I hope I don't sound like a defence lawyer of Russian rough behaviour, which is quite common here : )

Very interesting because they say 'in the beginning was the word' So, I'm just wondering why terms such as Etiquette or Politeness are non-British...origin

I remember listening to one of your episodes, talking about how difficult it is to end a podcast with guests. Maybe a timer is a good idea? If you make it a rule that when the timer rings, you have to stop talking abruptly, without ‘have a nice day’.

Here in Russia, many of us really say abruptly just the name of what we’d like to order - ‘tea’, ‘one beer’ etc - adding ‘please’ is not so common in general; some don’t use even ‘give me’😄

In Germany I noticed that people at the bar usually simply ask for "Zweimal bitte!" (Two times please!). But don't dare to skip "mal", otherwise it sounds awkward. And as for the Amazon and delivering, that has reminded me one of the unsolved questions from my times in logistics: If the goods are being delivered by truck (or lorry, or car, or tractor if the road is rough) they are called "shipment", but why on earth they are called "cargo" if they are going by ship? Anyway, in both cases don't forget to track them.

There's one element to the tone used in English which I find confusing. I use English on a daily basis at work but with no native English speakers. They are usually Polish (like me) and Austrians and I feel somewhat unnatural writing "I hope you had a nice weekend" or something like this. 1) We don't use phrases like this in our native languages. 2) I've heard comments on this being irritating like: "why are you asking if you're not interested in me answering to this?" and I can relate to that sentiment too. 3) My correspondent may not be aware of such a custom in English and be confused by my butting in into their private life or compelled to answer the question even though they don't feel like it. Anyone has some thought on that topic?
