As an English teacher,I do love this episode! Thanks Luke!

Hi! I'm glad you touched on the Silent Way approach. I've been a SW teacher since 2014 (I teach English and German using the Silent Way). Becoming and being a SW teacher is a transformative process. My experience has been that it has made me a better human being, more attuned and present in my life, let alone a better teacher. Caleb Gattegno, the mind behind the approach, based his whole pedagogy on the building blocks of learning, i.e. awarenesses. Moreover, the Silent Way is actually an explicit model of how people learn languages and all SW materials (the phonemic chart - not phonetic, as your guest says in the video -, the word charts, the colours are actually expressions of awarenesses). The teacher is silent, but not mute and anyone interested in languages and communication knows that only a mere fraction of what we call communication makes use of words, so the teacher is in constant communication with the students. If one speaks, I may listen or tune out, but if one shows me something, points to something, I immediately become present. That's why Gattegno thought of pointing on the charts as a more effective way of keeping the students engaged and present with the language. I could go on and on about it, but I'll stop here and say that although neurosciences weren't a thing back when Gattegno devised the SW, neuroscientists have confirmed all his "informed guesses" about the brain (he called it "the mind") and how it learned (math, writing and foreign languages) - see Stanislas Dehaene's research and especially his brilliant book "How We Learn".

Thanks for this interview. I had a blast. I think this episode is super useful for any people training to become English teachers. I've myself gone through different phases and now being a self-employed English teacher, my eclectic method consists of the following: The communicative approach, lexical approach, Dogme, Krashen's theories of language acquisition, and community-based learning. I teach and design all my courses like that. I also think it's important to have justification for what you do online and how you teach. I've learnt this from you, Luke. This is what makes people trust us. There are too many "English teacher scammers" out there who are successful just because they have excellent marketing and sales skills but don't always know what they are doing.
@roberta2382 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more about the scammers out there. Just because they are native speakers they assume they are entitled to teach their language...
@ClarkandMillerOnlineEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. There are a lot of hacks out there, but so many more genuine decent teachers. Like Luke said, we should never be afraid to experiment, but we should also keep an eye on the theories and research to make our experimentation better informed.

Another interesting aspect that you quickly covered was the cultural background that plays a big role in our communication (i.g. Japanese students Vs "American style"). There are so many things to take into account when it comes to communication: implicit, explicit language, communication styles, cultural misunderstanding etc. I wish I had more time to read more about it. Or it might be an idea for the three of you for a future podcast! 😉

Hi Luke! I'm Sara and I'm also a teacher. Thank you both for this episode. I really enjoyed listening to it. However, I don't fully agree with you about TPR method of teaching. I LOVE it! It was the first method I learned and used at my job. By the way, I started as a primary teacher, so my first students were from 4-9 y.o. I know you're incredibly busy but I'd like to talk and maybe explain to your listeners how useful it can be. P.s. I don't have any fancy degree 🤣🤣🤣 But I read about different methods and found those ones which I can use well. I was moving to another country and couldn't listen to all your episodes because of lack of internet traffic on my phone) Thank you! ❤

I taught at Berlitz for a few months after my CELTA. One day I took a beginner book into an advanced class by mistake. After 10 minutes of drilling from a script, I realised their level when one guy said, 'It looks like you're holding a pen, not a pencil, to me mate!'

Then great episode where you both talk about things I am really passionate about: Star Wars 😍 and different teaching methodologies. I am not a teacher but I've always been interested in understanding how the learning/teaching process works. Besides it was good to know Gabriel Clark better. I came across a couple of his blog posts sometime ago and they were brilliantly written: very interesting content with humour. Thanks guys!

Hi Luke! Hope you doing well! I am wondering is it okay for us if we pronounce 'star' as 'sdar', 'spider' as 'sbider' and 'sky' as 'sgy'? I'm asking because lots of Chinese people like me were taught like that in our high school. Few days before I saw them-Chinese teachers and Foreign teachers- arguing about it. I'm really curious about it.
