I went plane spotting today and I saw a crosswind 747-400f landing. Just before touchdown the pilot straightened the nose and touched down. The engine also came a little bit close to the ground, but I think that's kind of normal in crosswind.

At 1:04 rotation you can also see the vortex shedding from the little vg blade on the turbine nacelle. The purpose of the vg is to energize the boundary layer at the nacelle to compensate for the lack of flap in that region and fill in the dip in the lift distribution. It contributes about a ton in increased cargo weight.

That's not vortex shedding, it's a wormhole. Watch from 1:02 in slow motion and you'll hear and see the entire time and space continuum fracture. Something violates Einstein's Law of General Relativity - probably a turbine blade travelling faster than light - and it affects everything in the vicinity. Whole buildings disappear, and ground crew get completely sucked off.

P & W R2800's on C 23s sometimes load up and get a rich mixture in reverse thrust and sometimes quit. It's not a big deal.

Tail strikes are not uncommon. I only dealt with one, on a 767, which scraped through the skin at the aft pressure bulkhead frame and the next four forwards. We patched it and life continued as normal, with only some internal fuselage inspections added to the maintenance programme. I know from experience that Airbus has dealt with many. I’m not aware of any aircraft being written off purely for tail strikes.

Near pod strike brings to mind how many copilots with whom I flew just totally relaxed any yoke aileron input once the nosewheel was on the ground, and how many times I had to grab it and put wing down into the wind. That was a wide-body jet. Doesn't matter how big the plane is--crosswinds must be attended to or a wing will come up.

That 747 really did have a lovely smile. I've always thought 747s were the friendliest of all the airliners, and the freighters seem so much more affable than the passenger variants. I'd love to go for a pint with that Qatari 747 freighter. I bet it'd have some good craich.

If you are ever on a decent pub crawl on the streets of Dublin and either an B-52 or a Lockheed Ventura offer to buy you a pint, walk the other way. Those bastards are barred from most pubs within city limits and will get you glassed quicker than you can say L'Chaim! And 757-200's are all sluts and most if not all Tupolevs will spike your drink.

The last one looked more like a routine engine shutdown than an engine failure. Some aircraft don't need all engines to taxi, so they shut down some after landing.

To the 747 -8 during the touch down of the aircraft on the runway, It is important to keep that aileron cross wind correction component engaged, and do not take it out unless you have considerably reduced the airspeed. That cross wind component is not going anywhere, just because you fail to stop correcting for it.

Ich bin eher ein Fan von Ton getrennt aufnehmen und später ans Video hängen. Geht doch einfach in Premiere. Ich hab ein Olympus Diktiergerät, das einen schönen Stereoton aufnimmt und mp3 und WAV kann. Reicht mir für alles. Externer Mic Eingang ist auch vorhanden. Als Sync kann man klatschen oder ähnliches. Batterielaufzeit hält ewig, besser als bei den Zoom Dingern.
