74D MOS: What to Expect 2020 // In this video we take a look at the “74D MOS” and “What To Expect in 2020”. I got the distinct pleasure to interview “Andreashavon” or SPC Starks. SPC Starks breaks down her experience as well as “What to Expect” as Soldier and or NCO in this career field.

Mighty Baby well, it was certainly interesting. I’m graduated now class 11-20 July 24th. It was always an interesting topic (besides warning and reporting that was kinda boring) I learned stuff I didn’t even think I’d need to know. And a good portion of it was hands on. The hardest part wasn’t the academics it was our Barracks life, Bravo company 84th is know for being rough but it made me a better solider. PM me if anyone has questions or needs advice.

jacob thomas I just got to training 3 weeks ago and we hear Bravo get shitted on day and night( I’m Charlie 84th) class #16. The hardest thing so far is following the SOP. Is there anything I should look out for academic wise?
@jacobthomas8035
@jacobthomas8035 3 жыл бұрын
Mighty Baby if you’re three weeks in you’re probably on DRO, decon or CBRNWRS. Only advice I have for you is don’t skip out on HAZMAT and radiological classes they are the hardest tests. Most of your tests are open book so don’t take notes make a summary or an index example: “detailed troop decon pg. 35-38” that way you can quickly turn to that page and read what you need to. Other than that enjoy being in chill Charlie! Instead of bitchin’ bravo

I enjoyed being a dragon soldier. Prior to becoming a chemical soldier, I was a heavy truck driver. I accumulated over 70,000 miles operating a Heavy Equipment Transporter. We mainly halted tanks, infantry and artillery pieces. I was also assigned to two engineer heavy earth moving platoons prior to changing to chemical. I fell in love with the chemical corps. I spent 3 years at a Bn field artillery as a BN Chemical NCO/Off. Yes, I spent 3 years in the field attending every command post and Bn field exercises as a 24 year old SSG as a Bn NBC NCO. The TOC was no joke. Shoot, Move, and Communicate are what artillery does for a living. I became a super soldier in that Bn. I spent 7 years teaching at the chemical school at Ft. McClellan, Al. I was assigned to 4th Chem Company, Korea as a PSG/Off. We conducted real word decon missions. I was assigned to Fort Moore as a Regimental chem/M16A2 zero/qualification and night fire range NCO. I rapid fired to SFC in 11 years. I could have gotten promoted to CSM if I would’ve stayed in. I was burnt out so I retired at 20 years and taught Army HS JROTC for 25.5 years. The army still needs the best leaders leading our soldiers. I was so motivated as a chemical soldier, I could have led an infantry platoon. I was a 1SG in an engineer HQ company while the 1SG was on leave. I had the mentality of being the best not only in chemical but as well as non chemical units. All of my boyhood’s dreams came true as a US soldier in the best Army in the world. Air Assault, Hooah!

Chem dog...joining in 2004 it was 74d NBC they changed it in 2012 i think. I loved it . more responsibility in a non chemical unit because its just you n ur NCO in headquarters. Shes right on connecting with other chem dogs in other units. Its harder to get promoted in a chemical unit cuz everyone is gunning to get promoted also. Take all classes that is given to u. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING WITH UR NAME ON IT..rt. especially medical.

I’ve been doing personal training to be able to join the Marines in the 5711 MOS (the USMC’s CBRN specialists) this video was really helpful. My grandad was a DS at Fort Lost in the Woods and on that side of the family those who served are primarily army. On my dad’s side they primarily served in the navy so if I’m serving the marines seems like a logical option.

Most all of the tests are open book. The ones that aren't are HAZMAT (both Awareness and Ops.) and MCD (Mass Casualty Decontamination). If you take good notes, or for me, have a good highlighter, you should pass everything with flying colors. Most of them you know what score you got the same day you take the test.

A lot has changed since I went for my 74D AIT just a few years ago. When I went there we didn’t continue to have drill sergeants but that has changed. Just think of AIT as the more educational part of your training. But that’s not to say you won’t be physically tested either. The classes you take are a little like college courses. Be sure to pay attention and study. Sometimes you’ll have civilian instructors as well as NCOs. The most important classes are the certifications for Haz Mat that can be very difficult if you’re not prepared. But the instructors will give you all the tools you need. Honestly there’s a lot to learn but the weeks fly by. In AIT Black/Gold Phase you’ll get some extra privileges like weekend passes to relax and explore FLW. So it’s not exactly basic training 24/7. Early on in AIT (if you’re active duty) you’ll probably get your duty assignment post AIT. Many Chemical soldiers do go to South Korea. All in all, put your best foot forward and you’ll be fine. After Basic everything will seem easy anyway. Good luck man

I strongly suggest avoiding this MOS. If you want to be involved in CBRN/Hazmat pick the 89 series instead. EOD does more chem and rad training than actual CBRNs. They are also better trained, better equipped, more qualified and tend to have more funding. Only a very very small percentage of 74Ds actually get to perform their jobs throughout their career; All the rest are used for admin work and property holders. Chemical units are rarely called in either bc most times the task will eventually just get handed over to EOD or CRD. Unless you are interest in attending Ranger School and by luck get a slot in a CRD unit I would not recommend this MOS to anybody.
