I got my Atari in 79, and it was the best time of my life. I only was able to afford maybe 10 cartridges, but we depended on our friends getting different games, then we would all go to each others' houses and play new games! Great memories!!!

it seems some idiots are trying to compare a 40 year old system with a current one. what kind of shitty IQ you guys have?. it was made in the 70s. we should be thankful for it because it is simply the grand daddy of home consoles and the system that defined them. it is remarkable that there are countless people still playing them. this only tells how awesome the atari 2600 is. also. you got to give them credit for their creativity. they made so much of what they had.

Those raster colours. I'm so impressed with how the programmers managed to directly manipulate the display signal to show so many vibrant shaded colours on screen. It is like I learned when they were going to bomb back then. I also had laser blast (almost played itself), Stampede (terrible game) and a few others I can't remember (about 10 games all up - I bought the Atari 2600 and games (except 1 game) all by myself. I didn't know they had jungle hunt available. I forgot how bad the sound / graphics are although looking at the specs the maximum is 160 x 192 which surprisingly is about the same as the original gameboy. I still play Space invaders (every few months) on an emulator and still have the Atari 2600 Space invaders cartridge (for copyright reasons)

Somewhere around 1984/85 (maybe even later) I think they had an arcade game in a coffeshop that we as kids would go watch after school (bigger boys would play, we smaller ones would just watch). It was a game where you would advance through a pyramid, through rooms. In a room things would attack you, room was like a labyrinth, it had walls and treasure boxes that would open, doors that would roll open and you would have to collect (some things) and move forward through exit door. By memory graphics was incredibly nice and the screen would slide - was not fixed. (and it was not Lost Tomb game). To this day I'm trying to find which game (and system) it was, so I could find an emulator ... but I could not find this game so far. Anyone has any idea?

Now let's be honest: Yes, everybody that grew up with these games will agree that graphics aren't as important as gameplay. However, most of the games had serious issues regarding gameplay and only a few of them are the result of technical limitations. I had at least 20 cartridges and I regularly swapped them with friends. But almost every game had at least one design flaw that was highly annoying and you only kept on playing because it was the best you had. Joust was about the only perfect game I can think of. Here are some examples: - Moon Patrol : It gets ridiculously difficult very fast, mostly because you can't see far ahead. You cannot stop and need the right speed to jump over ditches and obstacles, which means you need to know in advance what will come. Even then you'd be screwed if an enemy shoots at the wrong time, there simply is no way out. - *Moonsweeper*: I really liked the concept of a 2 stages game where you select the difficult of the second stage by picking the right planet in the first. However, both blue and green planets (supposed to be the easiest ones) had no difference in difficulty but granted the least points. The highest, red, was in fact very hard. Most importantly, the satellites were impossible to hit since they never fully entered the screen. The yello one, however, was only slightly more difficult than blue and green but granted almost the most points. And the satellites flew very low and thus were easy to hit. So, all you ever did was picking yellow planets, rendering the first stage useless (or let's say turning it into a game of avoiding everything but yellow). Also, you main objective was to pick up and rescue 6 workers and then leave the planet, however, you got more points by killing satellites all day. Which means if you cared for your score you would not play the game as intended in more than one way. - Pheonix : This had 3 different stages and all of them were great. However, after killing the mother ship (which you do quite fast) the game just starts all over. While other games increased difficulty too fast, this one didn't increase difficulty *at all*. To make it worse, the enemies always moved in exactly the same patterns. You could just memorize them and play indefinitely. I can honestly say I can write something like this about every single game except Joust. And that's not in hindsight, it was annoying back then as well, but you simply had nothing better. Also, the games I just mentioned were my favourites. Don't get me started on the lesser ones. I still have fond memories of course, playing with friends and all, but you need to indulge in a lot of nostalgia to call these games great, regardless of the graphics.
