Thrift stores are called Charity shops in the UK. I bought a Yashica fxd quartz camera in one recently, it has a 50mm f2 ml lens for £20. I have replaced the leatherette body covering with a kit from Ebay. Cost £11. Now it's pristine and performs perfectly. Great viewfinder.

When that was new in the early 70's, a kit like that might cost over $600. It was the time when professional cameras were becoming more common purchases for hobby photographers. We had darkrooms and did our own developing. The camera bodies were all metal, generally brass, the lens housing was also metal. They were designed to survive the rigors of heavy, daily use at weddings or in a war zone. You would think of a camera like a mechanic and their tools.
@KylerSteele4 жыл бұрын
Nice find! I’d be interested in seeing how you replace the light seals
@richardt17923 жыл бұрын
Light seals are easy to replace. Go to Michaels craft store and for about a dollar you can buy a sheet of black felt with sticky stuff on the back. cut thin strips to go in the groves of the camera and a little wider strip to replace the strip along the back of the camera door. It really is a five or ten minute job and it won't turn to goo like the black foam.

Funny that KZbin recommended me this video after doing research on the OM-1. Last month, I got very lucky and found a red camera bag with a black Olympus OM-1 (non-MD), three lenses, filters, winder, plus a Sekonic light meter. My local Savers probably didn't even open the bag because I managed to get everything for $10.99!! That is definitely my thrift find of the year so far. Thanks for the video! Been following your channel for a little bit now and I've been learning bits and pieces of photography through you and a couple other places.

I recently got an OM-1 with the 50mm f1.4 lens and shot my first ever roll of film in the new year. I never thought I’d get into film photography, for a while I’ve been wanting a new mid-priced digital mirrorless camera like a Canon R6. Really glad I got such a sick piece of gear, it’s beautiful and the lens is legitimately a dream. Absolutely hyped to be part of the community, the OM-1 will not be my last film camera.

The whole bag looks like a keeper to me! About the manual: as you see it is only a small booklet, of which a large part will likely be about how to take good photographs. Contrast this with modern digital cameras where you get a 150-page paperback book with endless, tedious descriptions of all the different menu options, and not one word on actual photography.

Had something somewhat similar happen last week, I am a Real Estate Photographer was photographic a clients home and before I left she said she had something for me. Brings out a bag actually very similar to the one shown in this video. In the bag were a Minolta Maxxum 7000, Canon T50 and my fav. one Canon AE-1. Just got a motor drive for the AE-1 put on a new camera strap and film it has become my absolute fav. camera. I tested all cameras and they all work. Inside the bag were also multiple zoom lenses, flash, filters etc etc even a cleaning kit just like the one in your bag oh and also a lot of documents, original manual guides for the cameras. So dope man, ty for your vids definitely inspired me to shoot more film. Blessings brother, be safe out there, keep on shooting, have fun.

REI Ultrapod: probably a collapsible tabletop tripod branded for REI, a major seller of outdoors/hiking equipment. Overall, what a surprise thrift find. Not personally a big fan of Olympus OM stuff, but I really like the bag. Looks like this kit has been sitting in grandpa's closet for about 25 years. Doubt the film is worth the cost of chemicals to process it at age 25+ years and no cold or frozen storage.

Hey brother amazing find! Congrats, hey I just wanted to recommend using 90% isopropyl alcohol to sanitize, I’ve found using Clorox wipes can leave a sticky residue on certain surfaces and isn’t necessarily fast drying but IPA is very fast drying and safe to use around electronics and can even be used on lenses to get the initial dust off before you use a lens wipe! Just wanted let you know but congrats brother

You said people use that flatbed scanner to scan their negs. How do you use a regular non film scanner to scan film? I've tried with my phone screen and even a USB light table turned upside-down over the film on the scan bed. Love the vids.
