Probably one of the most eclectic years of all in terms of music genres in popular music.

It really is! I would have thought it would have happened in the mid-90s, but this one really shows how some genres were branching out into some subgenres. Even though it's not my fave, I really love the incorporation of the variety of sounds. For the 2000s, 2002 just has an energy I really vibe with! 🤗 But we have 6 more for the decade, so that could change fast! It's crazy how much I look forward to these!!

2003 was also the year Apple launched the iTunes Music Store. I like to think it’s easy access to music helped people to really diversify their music tastes, resulting in an eclectic bunch of styles in pop music from this point on to the rest of the 2000’s.

As soon as we see video shot from the inside of someone's mouth, that's gonna be Franz Ferdinand's "Darts of Pleasure". I predict the accompanying audio will be the drums from the start of the song. (In the video, the singer sings the song while brushing his teeth).

Pleasantly surprised they chose to sample “Darts of Pleasure”; I figured we wouldn’t hear Franz in this series until “Take Me Out” in 2004. No complains though, that first Franz Ferdinand album was the first album I ever bought as a kid. Still holds up incredibly well today!

My first bold prediction: The mashup opens with the horns from Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" (which btw, if this song appears (which it probably will), it'll be Beyonce's debut in this series as a solo artist), and the "One, two, three, uh!" from OutKast's "Hey Ya!" is used during the title card. I'm also thinking Kanye will likely make his first appearance in the series with "Through the Wire," which was released as a single in 2003.

Agreed. I particularly like the way the first part of the mashup is a story. Mr Brightside is all about jealousy and a mental health death spiral, until Andre 3000 comes in with "Alright alright alright alright" and cheers everyone up, while the backing track is the same but more upbeat. That's not just music, it's a narrative arc. The Hood Internet do that kind of thing in several of their mashups as little easter eggs.

I just found that out too. It was initially released as a single in September 2003 then re-released along with their album Hot Fuss in 2004.

Every time I watch another one of these I think, yeah they can't be expected to top what they did with the ones from the 80s. And I am gradually realizing that it has nothing to do with the talent of the mixing, which has only increased, but more with the fact that you can't continue to make great mixes out of crap music. The general output of the industry has really gone downhill (80% of it, anyway) over the past 2-to-3 decades.
