The only surviving Messerschmitt BF109E-4 still flying. It was shot down and belly landed in a field during the Battle of Britain in 1940. It is currently with the Russel Aviation Group, Ontario Canada.

steke ... as well they should... And I'm not so sure that interpreting it as crass and offensive is "the wrong way". I'm not as concerned about the swastika being retained as an historically accurate design feature as I am about some boorish thug seeing it as "glorious". This may have been just an poor choice of words, but it may have been sincere. It was really amazing seeing such a storied airplane take to the skies after so many years. But glorious? No.

It's too bad my father is no longer alive to see this wonderful piece of history actually flying and up where it belongs. He flew P-47's out of England in WWII and went up against these planes and the best pilots the Luftwaffe had. I can only imagine what memories that would go through his head, good and bad. He went on to fly in Korea and two tours of Viet-Nam. The P-47 remained his favorite plane. RIP Dad.

Those crybabies who complain about it and want it banned, you got to deal with it, it's a piece of humanity that won't and shouldn't be erased by any means. +Daniel De Rudder Not the only one in flying condition. There are now six (2 E models, 4 G models) in flying condition worldwide, with two more almost ready. Plus there are another ten or so in various stages of restoration to fly in the future. Since the German engines are so rare, the flying Bf-109 population will probably remain low until new technologies make it less expensive to craft engines and parts to keep them flying. New engines are technically possible, but we have not reached that point yet.

+FiveCentsPlease I feel like it's hard to tell sometimes. Sometimes people say "only remaining in flying condition" and other times it's "only remaining original in flying condition". Obviously surviving orginal planes that actually flew or were at least made during the war are going to be more valuable, but I see nothing wrong with reproducing modern replicas from the original design. With modern technology I would think that's definitely possible, and also definitely worthwhile for famous planes of which no flying examples survived.

When I see this video, I imagine the courage and daring, the FEAR and excitement they must have felt SOARING to a bold victory,or, SUFFERING an excruciating death.....often plummeting into the ground after burning and screaming all the way down !!! I KNOW about this because my DAD flew in combat in WWII and the memories of his buddies SCREAMING on the radio never left him. I say this plane is a hallowed and ACTUAL part of history, and should be preserved EXACTLY as it was when it flew in combat...INCLUDING all its insignias. That is what OUR bomber crews saw in the air to terrify them....we LOST 50,000 men in the air over Europe . With the exception of a very few, most pilots on BOTH sides were men of honor that dueled to the death as knights of old did...this plane helps us to REMEMBER them !!...

Hi all, the reason for the "goofy" music is that this is a recut of a japanese DVD of a british documentary. Oddly enough there are entire takes of this aircraft in flight where all you hear is the sound from the chase plane, a cessna or something commercial like that. On the ground too, there were scenes where there was lots of wind noise and one or two takes with no sound at all! Very unexciting and uninspiring, unlike the "goofy" music I chose lol.

Dude that music is awesome! I love the Tron Legacy Soundtrack, it's not just good, it's like the film should have won an oscar for best soundtrack. I never thought these 2 songs could be matched so perfect to videos but you just showed the best way to use them. This Plane and Daft Punk just rock, even if you can hear the DB engine only a few seconds it still gives me goosebumps in combination with the epic soundtrack ! Thumbs up !

The "music" is the sound of the engine, at start up, take off, flying, high speed passes, landings, etc...It is not some soundtrack layed over the engine, it is not some airshow announcer telling you what you are hearing, it is the engine that is the music...Far to many of these vids are ruined by this...

The 109 was a good plane but not able to stay over London and southern east England over 10 minutes cos of fuel problems. That's why the Battle of Britain was won by our RAF by shooting down most of Henkiel HE 110s without their escorts.

I saw this bird up close and personal at Thunder Over Michigan back around 2007. What this video doesn't quite fully convey is the slightly untamed, nervous thoroughbred sound of that motor at idle. It just sounded like internal combustion perfection.

5:04 pilot has damn good skills to land this aircraft that safe on a bumpy grass strip. The Bf-109 is very hard to control on the ground during start and landing due to the position and the small distance of the main landing gear. An unexperienced pilot would have lost control and rolled it over, as it happened to many young Luftwaffe pilots in the last months of the war... This aircraft doesn't forgive any mistakes, especially while rolling on the ground at high speed.
