#cumminsrepower #tremec4050 great power, 17.7MPG so far during break in period, cruises easy and smooth, couldn’t be happier with the swap. Not this loud in the cab, put an external mic back by the tail pipe to get the diesel sounds #anythingScout #newlegend4x4 #cumminsrepowerofficial

How far can you go on a tank of fuel? Have you calculated an average MPG yet? Hopefully Cummins keeps making these engines. They've been out of stock for a while. For those of us looking to maximize the range in our old trucks, with the benefits of diesel clickity clacks and turbo noises, this seems like the way to go. This was a good driving impression vid.

I’m averaging 22.5 MPG. Haven’t run the tank all the way down but it’s a 30 gallon tank. Mileage will get better if it’s anything like my other Cummins powered vehicles. @russfoust8718
@russfoust8718 3 жыл бұрын
Compared to an old 5.9L or the 3.9L Cummins it doesn't vibrate near as much. It's noisier than the brand new diesels in modern pickups with all the DPF/resonators and mufflers but it's not something that bothers me personally. I can't say it vibrates a lot while driving or at speed. I also probably am not the best to comment on this as my straight pipe is noisier than other 2.8's I've seen. My brother has a 2.8 in a Scout with a muffler and I think it's really quiet.

@russfoust8718
@russfoust8718 2 жыл бұрын
It has good torque, likely every bit as much as the 5.4L. I'm sure it can tow more than I would expect but I'm also sure that this motor in that van would depend primarily on gearing and transmission to determine if it's a viable option. Most I've towed with mine is a 14ft utility trailer with a 4 seater UTV and it did fine, only lost a little speed on steeper, longer hills.

HOW DOES THE ENGINE PERFORM ABOVE 70 MPH? S IT GUTLESS?
@russfoust8718

Above 70 is 2300+ RPMS, has plenty of power but it’s not snappy. Maintains speed in Colorado on the highway if that tells you anything

@@1rodnumero It'd be an awesome swap and plenty of power for such a small package, just not sure if/how it would fit. It's as large as a 345 International V8 but considerably lighter. It fills the engine bay in the Scout

Trying to sell my 96 12-valve 4x4...hopefully use that money to get a R2.8. I'm dropping right in behind a NV435. With 35's, 3.75(lockers at both end)NP205...I should be good at 75mph and Granny should be good for the extra low.

You are driving your diesel like a gasoline engine. There is no need to drive it at high rpm’s before changing gears. Diesel’s high torque is available at low rpm’s.

Thanks for the unsolicited advice coming from a person who has never driven an R2.8 in a Scout Traveler. At no point was I at anywhere near “high RPMS”, never above 2500 R’s even though the cummins rep says these motors love Revs. This isn’t a 5.9, there are bigger gaps between gears on this trans than I’d prefer if I was designing it but I wanted a wide ratio for the low first while maintaining a hood overdrive. If I don’t get up the revs it loses its ass.

@@russfoust8718 Great answer. Now it makes sense to me why most of the videos of the R2.8 swap that I’ve watch, the owners rev up the engine. You are correct, I have never been in the driver’s seat of any of these swaps, but I have been around diesels for most of my life, and I right now own a small 1.6Hdi Peugeot. I want to build a light-overland vehicle but had a question whether to buy an old vehicle and swap to a R2.8; or go the expensive way, buy a Toyota/Mitsubishi pick up (diesel) and forget about the mods. Your answer shade the correct light on my question. Thank you! Happy Trails!

Another useless 1st gear and pretty average overdrive . May as well keep your NV4500 at half the cost. Actually the ratio spread is even worse than the NV4500. Its a shame no one makes a real 5 (6) speed to replace the zf s6 650 for us heavy pickup guys...
@russfoust8718

I actually really like the first, overdrive and ratio spread and it’s a much better trans than the nv4500 that’s always felt loose and sloppy.

@@eelson2 with 4.10’s and the overdrive, and all the steering refresh/upgrades, 80-85 is no problem and did it today. 70-75 is easy and in a good rpm range for pretty good MPG’s.
