All I can say James is that I’m glad you ignored Paul and the bloke in the yard and used a jigsaw instead of an angle grinder as I can pretty much guarantee you the latter would have made a right mess with slits everywhere. As it is you have a beautifully clean hole. The flue looks lovely well done on this milestone Gonna be lovely in there later once you fire it up.

A very good morning James 😄 Ever since I came across episode 81 I was addicted. Because your doing this yourself and not relying on tradesmen the attention to detail is exemplary 👍🏻 I jumped for joy with you when the flue went in lol 😂 A celebratory brew nothing better. Well done and cheers for another great episode on the narrowboat that James built. Stevie. 😎

You mention fire cement but try and avoid that if you can James, it dries very hard, obviously as the name implies, like cement and doesnt afford any give for expansion as things heat up and it will end up cracking and failing in a short space of time. Have a look around the chandlers for sealant, they have special ones that can take a considerable amount of heat whilst allowing for expansion. You'd use that on the top where the flue meets the stove and where the flue passes through the collar. Also you'll want to pad out these joins with fire rope and then seal over the top :)

Just a thought. If you seal the flue up now, you're going to have a problem cutting the ceiling lining. I'd either make it temporary, or else install that area of ceiling now when it's easy to cut the flue opening. As long as there's access both ends of the lining, you should still be able to feed cabling through, or put a draw cord in now.

Hi james, nice job. Remember to cut the chimney pipe 1/2 shorter, so that the tar will run back down the chimney. Pack the pipe in the collar with fire rope and heat resistance silicon. Do not use fire clement and use the silicon on all joints. That's how I did mine.

James a suggestion for next time you put a hole through, for pipes or watse, measure the outside dia let's say your flue was 150mm then add say 3mm and cut to that line and you will save yourselve a lot of filing and backache... Just be carefully not to add too much clearance though... Cheers for the Vids, at least you'll be toasty warm for when the snow blows soon...Good luck.

An angle grinder will always cut a rough hole. And how would you cut a circle with it neatly? And it doesn't matter that you could hide it with the cowel and no one will ever see it.. Remember the butchered hole that your mains runs through? 😖 Always best to do a nice job. Even if it takes you longer. 👍

You could still address the main fire risk from the flue by fitting heat protection panels (similar to those you've fitted around the stove) up the wall and around the flue exit on the ceiling. If you look at newish boats, and many newly-renovated old boats, you'll see many examples of this approach.
