Monitoring HF transoceanic aircraft radio at 5547 kHz (plus live flight tracking). The ground control station heard is located in San Francisco, California. The tones that you hear being transmitted are known as SELCAL tones. SELCAL is "a radio system that alerts an aircraft's crew that a ground radio station wishes to communicate with the aircraft. SELCAL uses a ground-based encoder and radio transmitter to broadcast an audio signal that is picked up by a decoder and radio receiver on an aircraft. The use of SELCAL allows an aircraft crew to be notified of incoming communications even when the aircraft's radio has been muted. Thus, crewmembers need not devote their attention to continuous radio listening."

I fly the pacific tracks twice a week , this is cool that you can listen to it on the ground using your radio. Normally during the day you can check 8843 / 5574 / 10057 , those are always the most popular ones . Aloha

Though CPDLC has many benefits over heavily congested areas, there's nothing like radio!

Been doing this while mobile lately with yaesu FT-991A, I listen mostly to 11.297 and 11.309 USB. It's really cool to "see" the aircraft you hear transmitting!

the problem is that this will be probably lost in the near future due to the growing fleet of aircraft geostationary satellites like the Iridium constellation... I really love this kind of communication using radio based information transmissions to guide someone, it's really interesting and it'll be sad if it's lost.

It likely won't as using a sat-phone has to much delay by way of transmission distance making conversation difficult

3 years later, hope you're doing well! Yes, most flights are CPDLC equipped, but I recon 1 or 2 flights everyday stick with the good ol' radio!

Curt what type of SDR receiver are you using? What style antenna do you use for receiving HF? We used Motorola "Z" series tones in the late seventies for fire station alerting before transitioning to Quik Call II in 1981. Most Fire Departments used Quik Call I (SELCALL chord style selective calling) in the United States in the 60's and 70's. / /
