Its hilarious to me how so many of the commenters forget that California was celebrating Mexican Independence long before it was celebrating the 4th of July. Alta California, as it was known was a part of México. Los Angeles is spanish for the angels. La Brea, Sepulveda, La Cienega, La Tijera, Encino, San Fernando, San Gabriel, San Pedro, Rancho Palos Verdes, are all spanish words.

@@Sam-oo6wy California on the eve of contact with Europeans was an exuberant clamor of Native American economies, languages, tribes, and individuals. Indigenous people had worshiped, loved, traded, and fought in California for at least 12,000 years - some believe since time immemorial.
@Ed17908
@Ed17908 10 ай бұрын
@@Sam-oo6wy Fast forward: Mexican independence opened the California door to trade with other countries, especially the United States. In the early 1820s, Anglo-Americans2 developed an intensive trade with California via sailing ships around Cape Horn. The Old Spanish Trail, established in 1829 to link Los Angeles and Santa Fe, New Mexico, became the first major northern Mexican interprovincial trade route. Moreover, it linked California to the Santa Fe Trail between New Mexico and the United States. Soon huge sprawling ranchos became the basic socio-economic units of the province. While upward mobility remained difficult, some Mexicans succeeded in making the transition into the California elite, particularly with the help of these land grants. During the 1821-1846 period, Anglo-Americans began to settle in California. Many of these settlers, particularly those who had come by ship, eventually married Mexican women (usually of the local aristocracy), became Mexican citizens, and obtained land grants. The Mexican Peso was also worth more than the American dollar at that time. During the period when silver was flowing to China, the Mexican peso became the standard coin throughout much of the world. In some ways, it was the first global product with a brand name-"Mexican pesos," not "silver.”

@@Sam-oo6wy Yes Spaniards who thought they landed in India, Asia know how to map bahahaha. Europeans have to thank Middle Easterners/other for mapping, the compass, etc, etc… anyway, there is a myth that Europeans arrived in the Americas and divided the land up, mystifying Native Americans who had no concept of property rights. In reality, historian Allen Greer writes, “various American societies had highly-developed systems of property ownership and use. Meanwhile, European colonists sometimes viewed land as a common resource, not just as individual property.” The mythic vision of clashing views of property goes back to John Locke.

The "Ta'h Taah!" At the end. Classic. Many of you really don't understand what America is all about. America allows it's people to celebrate what ever they want to celebrate without being persecuted. America allows it's people to pray to whatever God they choose to believe in without prejudice. America allows it's people to be who they want to be without threats from a dictator. You can do all of this in America without fear....... as long as you pay your TAXES. 😂

@@jhowardsupporter Actually Spain's military did those crimes not the Church Natives fought among themselves. No one tribe owned. America No name for the whole country No immigration laws. No national government How do you own a country without those? Natives were not peaceful. READ THIS Sep 7, 2000 Thomas H. Maugh II Los Angeles Times The first unequivocal evidence that American Indians practiced cannibalism has been discovered by researchers studying a small Anasazi settlement in what is now southwestern Colorado that was mysteriously abandoned about 1150 A.D. Of all the North American Indian tribes, the seventeenth-century Iroquois are the most renowned for their cruelty towards other human beings. Scholars know that they ruthlessly tortured war prisoners and that they were cannibals; in the Algonquin tongue the word Mohawk actually means "flesh-eater." There is even a story that the Indians in neighboring Iroquois territory would flee their homes upon sight of just a small band of Mohawks. Ironically, the Iroquois were not alone in these practices. There is ample evidence that most, if not all, of the Indians of northeastern America engaged in cannibalism and torture-there is documentation of the Huron, Neutral, and Algonquin tribes each exhibiting the same behavior. This paper will examine these atrocities, search through several possible explanations, and ultimately reveal that the practices of cannibalism and torture in the Iroquois were actually related.

Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It's more popular in America than in Mexico and is mainly celebrated by Mexican-Americans since 1863. It was commercialized by beer companies in 1980's with campaigns which promoted the celebration. Today, Cinco de Mayo beer sales is on par to Super Bowl Sunday sales.
