My phone is too cheap to maintain calibration for field move clino. It is always off by ten degrees counter clockwise despite any calibration app or methods. I spoke with some geophysical students at the time And they said that electronic compasses will rarely give a reading with less than ten degrees accuracy. The other apps, rockd especially, look pretty cool. I'll have to check them out.

You would love Alice Springs your video on foliated metamorphic was great and explained allot about the the rocks found growing up.

I've been trying to use the Field Move Clino app and I wanted to check the accuracy of the clinometer before committing to it. So I took dip/strike readings with the app and compared it with the Brunton compass clino readings. I found that the readings match only when the readings of the app are taken with the phone vertical (i e., the top of the phone facing up). If the phone is kept horizontal or even slightly rotated to the left or right, the readings don't match with the Brunton compass readings. Can someone please explain why it is so?

What brand/ model of phone are you using? Could be a function of the compass and/or inclinometer of your phone.

@@CVshorey Thanks for replying. I am using an android phone. I've checked the accuracy of the compass and gyroscope and they're pretty accurate. In my opinion it's not the fault of these sensors.

@@CVshorey In the video, and other videos demonstrating the use of the FieldMove Clino, the orientation of the phone (along the axis perpendicular to the screen) doesn't matter as long as the back of the phone is flat against the rock bed. Now suppose if two readings are taken at an exact spot with 45° change in the orientation of the phone, (along the axis perpendicular to the screen) we get different readings for the dip direction. So why is it that that variation doesn't matter? I mean, if the phone is randomly placed on a surface (with the back flat on the bedding) without taking care of its orientation, wouldn't it give inconsistent readings? I wish I could show some pictures to make it clearer.

@@alongaier6280 Plz can you share pictures? I really want to use the app clino correctly, thankz

@@MelanieSosa Hi, am not sure what pictures you need but even am here looking for the right way to use the app.

I don't expect you to know the answer to this but I'm really hoping you might. Do you know the grit (like sandpaper grit) of different types of sandstone? If i was to try and use it as a honing stone. Sorry this is unrelated to this video but you're one of the best when it comes to geology knowledge!

It looks like this will be very difficult. home.howstuffworks.com/difference-between-grits-sandpaper.htm
