Wow the modern tooling and lathes are a long way from what I saw back in the early 1960s of course the equipment was even older. I worked on an new underground project across London, UK called the Victoria Line, it had twin train running tunnels and stations platform tunnels enlarged after the running tunnel had passed through. It was the first time Tunnel Boring Machines had been used in London, these were made by two different construction companies. The company had two sections of the project that run on from one another and so a large site was set up at the join point. Spares for these machines were not off the self so an engineering shop was set up together with a blacksmith shop, electrician & carpenters shops. Downtime was costly so these shops worked 24 hours repairing failed items and making spares for often worn out ones. Very little was made by the TBM suppliers which did not please them. I just loved watching the machinist getting over problems using the old lathes and tools of the time. Your equipment is a wonderland compaired to there's. Thanks for showing and explaining the now tooling.
@halheavydutyКүн бұрын
Oh wow. Thanks for sharing that good sir. How fascinating. I’m always humbled by what machinists could do back in the day with the tooling that existed. Those men knew how to get creative. Grandad was like that. He just figured stuff out and made it work… grinding up his own inserts. Remarkable

Keep up the knowledge transfer and I’ll keep watching.
@halheavyduty4 күн бұрын
Definitely get a small lathe. It’s actually pretty easy to machine stuff, and a whole lot of fun. That’s how HAL HD started. Grandad was a driller who got an old second hand lathe to machine up drill parts. The rest is history! 🇺🇸👊

Excellent seeing that insert explainer! We hear these insert types being mentioned all the time, but don't get an explanation of what each letter actually stands for. Going forward, perhaps you could flash up photos of that cheat-sheet each time you mention an insert, and those that are interested can pause your video to see the chart! (YT tip, use the < and > keys on your keyboard to move frame by frame, when paused). This allows everyone to learn new stuff, but doesn't interrupt the flow of your video! Win-win!

Excellent machining and these inserts do seem to perform really well. I'm happy to hear something new regarding turning inserts, which squeal, which last a long time and are heavy duty capable which I love the most, hate the weak inserts which last for couple parts and puts the tool itself at risk of breakage. Watching from Latvia, Northern Europe (more commonly known as Baltic states)
@halheavydutyКүн бұрын
Agree with you. We just go for good solid inserts (usually ISO) that will hold up under average conditions. Try to keep it really simple in the shop.
