Absolutely not. We post zero political content. It’s just who we are. A workshop that operates like it’s the 1980s basically. We work. Have fun & treat everyone fairly. That’s the sum of our interest in ANY politics.

Byford Western Australia. Boilermaker/welder by trade worked at Tasman oil tools years ago, worse job I had there was tungsten hard facing the stabilisers, then machining them back to spec in lathe with a grinding wheel head instead of a tool post. It looked like a cross between a lathe and a surface grinder

Hi Mat. Not too hot, not too cold...just perfect. Saying that i used to be a lathe operator/machinist so i understand almost everything about turning metal... In my opinion i think your explanation can make it understandable to people who are not into metal working. CEE Karen and Kurtis are my favorit watching them for many years. I enjoy Your videos too they are realy spot on.. Sorry for my english if i made any mistake. Im hungarian :)

Are there guidelines published as to how fast you drill or mill specific materials or are these decisions based upon experience, common sense and knowledge of the tools vs the stock? Thanks. Fascinating. Ohio, USA.
@halheavyduty19 сағат бұрын
So most of the carbide inserts come with a set of feed and speed guidelines, but it’s usually down to work holding and machine capability. I usually start at the lower range and then keep increasing until I find a comfortable maximum. Usually it’s about 70-80% of what the manufacturer recommends, but sometimes as low as 50% You can kind of hear it just hit the “sweet spot” … and you get a good idea by how the chips come off too.

Gidday, Like your channel, content, attitude and presentation. First time viewing and I've subbed and belled. I'm from WA. I'm a (retired) sparky bastard and have done work on locos, and electrical/fitting maintenance on large rail machinery - CNC and manual lathes, mills, borers and wheel lathes. Loved that work. Have you seen Abom on youtube? He's just doing some work with one of those big drills, 3 1/4". First time for him. He's restricted by his lathe, I think 160 revs and 8 thou feed. Cheers

Question: @6:25 What is that 4 tooth little ring for?
@halheavydutyКүн бұрын
It’s just called the drive ring. I’m guessing it’s because they are extendable drills (so you can add multiple extensions)

How does it remove material where there are tiny gaps in between the inserts and the pilot?
@halheavydutyКүн бұрын
The inner and outer teeth are spaced differently, so between them they fully remove material. The innermost tooth sits slightly recessed to the pilot (just)

Interesting. I was lucky enough to see a big drill head at a machine shop near me (north Brisbane area). It was more than 1.5m across,about 2.5m high and looked like it had at least half a tonne of welding in it😄. It was kind of cone shaped with spike teeth all over.I'm guessing it was made for soft rock.Wish i had asked more about it

Hi Matt, Mal from the UK ( Darlington, home of the railways), Reverse Engineering specialist, and currently CNC cell programmer and machinist ( 2 Colchester 8TM and I Colchester Multiturn). Loving the way you experiment with your tooling and don't necessarily rely on the manufacturers recommendations. Every machine is different as is every job, you gotta find the happy spot. Keep up the good work, and get some helmets for those kiddies. lol
@halheavydutyКүн бұрын
Wonderful! Cheers mate 🇬🇧How do you find the Colchester machines?
@1ginner1Күн бұрын
@@halheavyduty They are a bit flakey ( over 10 years old) but we have a great mech guy who knows them inside out. Spares for the older machines are a real problem, I have had to make some parts myself as Colchester no longer make some spares for these machines. All in all they function, but need a bit of TLC.

We sometimes reuse them as hard face on the side of stabilisers, but once they’re wrecked, they don’t cut.

Neil from East Yorkshire UK, semi-retired IT Security Architect, former network engineer and now designing and making microwave radio system components on KZbin. Working 70+ hours a week at 66 years old and having a fantastic amount of fun. I use a baby Colchester 1800 lathe. Most parts I make are a few millimetres diameter, but I recently started using insert drills to make some 36 mm holes for some specialist filters, and it's been a revelation. I run a SYIL X5 CNC mill (largest CNC mill I could fit through my ancient barn's door) and of course a Bridgeport knee mill. I watched this video specifically to see how you managed feeds and speeds with the big drill. I get excellent chip formation in steels and brass, but I don't have it dialled in for aluminium yet. Main takeaway for me is that I NEED a CNC lathe!!

@ I have some ebay searches for Harrison and Colchester Alphas and a few others with Fanuc controls, but I need to move a wall in the machine shop to fit one in unless I sell my manual Colchester, and I'm much too attached to the old cast-iron lump to do that.

Greetings from the Pacific North West(USA). Glad I found your channel always interesting. One of the ways that I have found to stop or decrease the squeal on boring bars is to wrap some rubber around the shank and clamp it in place. It will disrupt the harmonics that create the squeal and usually improves the finish. Don't worry about not being the most experienced, we are all learning more everyday, that's the best part of the trade. No one knows it all but everyone has a great idea.

@@joelwarthen1135 I use lead sheet held in place with rubber strips. That takes the whistle out pretty well. No use on 8mm carbide boring bars though!
