We bought this stone house in Italy during the pandemic in 2020. The house was a ruin and we saved everything we could, unfortunately that meant only four stone and clay walls! The back wall, against the terrain, was close to collapse; the roof beams were eaten and basically reduced to dust; the inside separation walls were easily taken down and the whole project turned into a heavy renovation/rebuild.

Can’t wait to see the kitchen floor once fully sealed. Visually great that you’ve changed the lay of the tiles to differentiate from kitchen, bedrooms, living/dining room. Ciao from Australia West Coast, we use enormous amounts of brick paving, mainly exterior, same method of grouting. Dry mix white cement, very loose sand similar to our beach sand, colourant. Using soft household broom brush into all gaps. Using a very fine mist like water from a hose taking care not to wash out the grouting. Allow to dry & repeat if necessary. Try small test area to see if it works in Italy. We most probably learned this from our Aussie Italian community. Keep up your wonderful work, love what you are achieving.

I read that you can place the joint mixture on the bricks in the dry form and sweep and spread into into the joints, then once it is totall filled, you wed the floor to activate the lime. This method might be used out of doors rather than inside, as I know plain sand is often used, too. Do ypu know if that method works? Perhaps it is only when pavers are on certain substrates. You know so much about sympathetic building. I was amazed walking around some of the 3 and 4 hundred year old buildings around some German towns how modern repairs had caused such extensive damage. Your floors are looking amazing

You should write a book, or at least a series of blogs, telling others how you went about doing some of the tasks before you forget how you did them. The problem is you learn the skills and then never use it again. Tiles are so cool underfoot. I remember in Greece some years ago sleeping on the floor. It was the only way to cool down. It was delicious. Those were the days before widespread air conditioning.

It's actually all the water we brought into the house when we poured the screed and the wet tiles that has been slow to evaporate 😉
