I appreciate how you talk through processing Ian’s mental health struggles and what you’re familiar with vs what’s foreign to you. Great reaction! Mickey’s character taught me so much about growing beyond the environment you were raised in, so he’s definitely my favorite & we see a big shift during this plot. He has shown his devotion to Ian before, but the love has really matured a lot & I think he fully commits ‘for life’ mentally during episode 5x6. There’s something new happening: how Mickey responds to fear with vulnerability, and he gains more solid emotional strength. The calm bravery in “Partner. Lover. Family.” wouldn’t have happened beforehand. And once again David’s editing is the best! There’s minor commentary almost like audience reactions inside the reaction, and he’s got great jokes🥇

I remember watching this shortly after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it hit me like a semi. People often say that Ian's dramatic or that he presents bipolar disorder wrong but I think people forget that for so many people it is like this. And that disorders are not always identical in different people. During that period of my life I had a partner much like Mickey in the way that he handled situations and while it was a rough relationship I'm always going to be grateful for him helping me through that time.

"I remember watching this shortly after I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and it hit me like a semi." Seriously?! Me too. I had the show recommended to me by *the* algorithm and then kept noticing uncanny similarities between Ian and myself, and then one week, bam! hospitalization and diagnosis. What was *the* thing that stood out to you?
@jasperscornerrr
@jasperscornerrr 10 ай бұрын
@@whitefox998 I actually thought that I had bpd and after someone close to me died I had to be evaluated because of the actions I took following it. Instead of acknowledging it I spent most of a month doing a lot of reckless things because I felt invincible. There were obviously things before that, getting frustrated easily if asked too many questions, randomly piercing and tattooing myself and I even did shrooms. That doesn't sound that crazy but I'd never done anything before and randomly decided oh yeah I can totally handle hallucinating by myself. What about you?

It's honestly a fantastic portrayal of bipolar 1. People seem to forget/don't understand that bipolar is split into two categories (with obvious variances from person to person). Ian is very clearly bipolar 1 which is more extreme and manic, only slightly played up for effect for the show (keyword is "slightly"). And it's a great representation of that type of bipolar disorder. I would imagine critics of it are probably either conflating or mixing it up with bipolar 2, which is more depressive and generally a bit easier to mask. Bipolar 2 is actually what people are talking about when they say "manic depressive" for anyone scrolling in the comments who aren't aware. It's the old term for it.

This pair of episodes is my favourite of this season, probably some of my favourites across the whole show, purely for the Ian and Mickey story, but my god I forgot how much it hurt. Mickey is so out of his depth, he loves Ian so much, whether he’s ready to admit it in 5.05 or not, but he just has no clue how to handle any of it, all he knows is he wants Ian with him. We have to remember what Mickey’s primary influence was like (Terry), he wasn’t raised with any kind of tools to handle this. All he has is his love for Ian, and it breaks my heart to see him realise he can’t be enough for him in this moment. Also I kind of love the idea of giving Jimmy increasingly more random names as the show goes on 😂 I think both the actors for Ian and Mickey do an amazing job in these episodes, you can really feel Ian’s fear and loss of control in the grocery store, and Mickey really falling apart back at the house because he’s scared, and he can’t just push it away this time with anger, as much as he attacks Svetlana over it. It’s a really subtle moment but when they pick Ian up from the police station, Lip says Mickey did a good job, and Mickey shakes his head, he really doesn’t believe he’s enough for Ian, and it breaks my heart because he risked everything to be with him and he’s still fighting that battle. It’s a nice bit of context to some future moments with Lip, that’s all I’ll say :)
@laurab1189

The scene were Ian walks into the psych ward is a tough one for me to watch too for personal reasons, and Mickey’s helplessness as he watches just breaks my heart, you just have to remember they’re in a place where they’re safe, but man it’s hard. Also Mickey’s relationship with the baby - Yevgeny - is so complicated; at this point he has these memories from the start of the season of he and Ian and Svetlana raising the baby together, and he’s kind of come around to him through Ian (because Ian clearly loves the baby and Mickey loves Ian), but Mickey also remembered the way he was conceived and the way he was first introduced to Svetlana, the violence and pain there, plus he has no feelings towards Svetlana, he was maybe 18 when he became a father, and at the time he was dealing with so much that it must have been really hard to feel connected to that kid, and now this. This moment where he holds him is just pure relief that things are OK, but it’s so complicated for him to even hold Yevgeny.

idk if im biased but i cant help but defend v, i can understand after having a baby having to think about another person over yourself all the time is new and difficult to wrap ur head around. she also could've been dealing with postpartum and especially with her difficulties with fertility she might feel even more shitty or ungrateful for feeling like she does. like how could she be unhappy when she has everything she wants? like the entire situation with them just having kids, feeling like theyre too busy to ever have any time to eachother, them both having sexual experiences with other people while being together like it was such an emotionally charged situation and i dont think it's as black and white as so many people paint it as.

v was dealing with pretty major postpartum regarding her behavior towards the crying kids. to be fair, she made it clear that she’d already checked on them, so they would’ve been fine long enough for kevin and her to have a conversation. i dont blame kevin at all and think he was right, but considering how postpartum sometimes manifest as resentment towards living in new parenthood

I am bipolar, and Ian is definitely to more of an extreme level but a few episodes ago when you thought he was on drugs, I don’t think he was but that’s honestly what it can feel like, you can be sober, you can be drunk, you can be high and it will still feel the same, you feel a rush when you’re manic, sometimes it can feel great, you get things done, you feel energized, other times you are impulsive, make bad decisions, you’re brain is on over drive as well as your body. sometimes when you are manic it can feel like you are invincible, you think you can do very sketchy things and be okay. I don’t drink really but anytime I do it’s usually in social situations and if I happen to be manic, my body almost doesn’t even pick it up, I can drink so much, smoke, anything and it doesn’t effect me even close to when I’m not, it’s a very complex disorder I definitely think more people should know the effects of it, the warning signs, because when it comes to being bipolar like that, you can feel on top of the world one moment, and then suicidal the next, And the problem with that (besides the obvious) is that since you don’t actually wanna die you do things that are super unsafe that could potentially cause that but more likely to just cause damage to yourself and others. It’s very scary. Another issue with it, is the meds you usually take for it can make you numb or depressed, what happens a lot is people will not get help or take meds because they will miss being manic because it does feel like a drug, but it’s not.

I know you said you didn't have much experience with Bipolar individuals- as someone who is type 1 with a type 1 husband and a type 2 mother, sometimes you have to be that harsh because it won't stick otherwise. When you're that manic you think you can do anything (I can speak from experience.) You reach such a point of delusion where if someone doesn't come to you like this and lay it straight out, you won't get help.

as someone who's dad is both a drug addict and a bipolar person i can say the line easily gets blurred, bipolar disorder displays heavy bursts of mania (which drugs can also cause) which means that no matter how crazy the person looks from the outside, they still think what they're doing is completely sane. my dad got stuck with the shitty combo of being both bipolar and schizophrenic which ended up worsening his state of mind a lot, i see a lot of similarities in monica (who we'll be seeing more of) that i do in my own dad and it made this season and the next particularly hard to watch for me because of just how accurate it is. i love how open you are to learning about things that are foreign to you without being too judgmental, you also react very similarly to how i reacted to certain scenes the first time i saw them, haha! love the videos

There's a lot of moments in this show that I can relate to personally, especially with Ian being bipolar like me and Monica being bipolar like my mom. when Ian drove off after Mickey said he had to take him to a hospital hit me. Because I did something similar, y'know minus the babynapping. but my brother said he was gonna take me to a hospital when he found out I was flushing my meds, so I ran off. I ran over to my friend's house since he had a car and we drove about 3 hours to one of his family member's houses. I was there for about a week but then there was a lot of shit about how I went from maniac and yelling at him and his family to too depressed I couldn't even get off the couch to eat or use the bathroom. when they told me I needed to go back home I was about to run again but when I realized I didn't even know where I was I walked back to their house and agreed to go home. it's a terrifying idea to be hospitalized, especially after Ive been to in patient care several times in my life. I hated and still hate in patient, it's literally prison for mentally ill people. I found myself relating to Ian a lot at the peak of his bipolar arc, they don't seem to mention it very much but during these seasons it helped a lot. Bipolar is different for everyone, and not a lot of people who are diagnosed with bipolar are at Ian's level, most people aren't that severe. so it's no shock that a lot of people said he wasnt representing it correctly. i wish they mentioned it more with him, because in my experience (and a few people I've met) I've had to get my meds readjusted several SEVERAL times because they just stopped working after a few months or so. I wish they had done something similar or at least showed the side effect of taking meds and stuff. or at least more interaction with him and Monica.
