What a fantastic post! I was a locomotive engineer for southern pacific hired out in 1963 at the age of 18. my father before me with a locomotive engineer and retired from Southern Pacific! I was born in 1945. I hired out at such a young age and didn’t really appreciate what I was experiencing at the time at least not fully! now I look back great memories! The stunningly beautiful runs like between Corvallis and Toled hillsboro to Tillamook! and those days I work with some of the old timers as they were getting ready to retire such charactErs! The old his depos. Also I forgot to mention the run between Crescent lake and Klamath Falls! I quit after 20 years to go into sales! now I have many fond memories! Love your channel

Before the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, the 4449, 700, and 197 were stored at the Brooklyn Roundhouse in southeast Portland, about 1.5 miles down the UP tracks from where the ORHC is at now. Back in 2001, when I was six, my grandparents drove me down there to see the 4449. We pulled up and looked through the windows to see it, and just as we were about to leave a volunteer drove up and asked us if we wanted to go inside. Of course we said yes, and he let us in and we got to climb up into the cab of 4449. It was in its WW2 'Baby Black' paint scheme then, and the next year we came back, this time with my brother, and got to get up in the cab again, but this time it was in its American Freedom Train scheme. We came back again the following year and it was back to its Daylight scheme. The move to the ORHC was due to UP wanting the land the Brooklyn Roundhouse was on, so the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation saved what they could from the roundhouse, including the turntable which is in the process of being reinstalled at the ORHC and put back into service. I'm so glad that any and everyone can see 4449, as well as 700 and 197, up close now. They're definitely great assets for the City of Portland. My family and I rode the Holiday Express in 2010, though 4449 was facing the other direction, having come from the Brooklyn Roundhouse and backing its train down to Oaks Park.

In February 1976 while living at San Antonio, Texas, my grandparents, two uncles and my dad saw the 4449 with the American Freedom Train. I saw the photos my grandparents taken. Then 33 years later in July 2009, I got a chance to see 4449 when the Steam Railroading Institute helds a historic event in Owosso, Michigan known as Train Festival 2009. Me, my brother and my grandparents went there for this great event on the 25th and 26th that month. Seeing there locomotives like Pere Marquette 1225 aka the Polar Express engine, Nickel Plate Road 765 and Central Pacific 63 "Leviathan". This is a great trip from Gallatin, TN to Owosso MI I'll never forget. Even after 13 years, it was still to this day the greatest highlight of my life seeing the most beautiful steam locomotive in the world with my very own eyes. Great video and Merry Christmas to you.

It's a good thing you posted this, because for the foreseeable future, neither 4449 or 700 will be running the Holiday Express trains. The OPR doesn't want those bigger steam engines running on their tracks because it creates more wear and tear on the tracks themselves to my understanding. So this year, being shipped from the OCSR is Polson 2. That smaller engine is running the Holiday Express this year, before being sent to Albany to join SMVR 205 there. Afterwards, I believe the ORHF will be using a shay locomotive to pull the excursions until 197 can get up and running.
@jimmyhook48522 жыл бұрын
Though of course.... until 197 is up and running, one has to get 700's FRA rebuild completed first thing, right? :)
@TrainsNStuff2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhook4852 that would be my guess. But they can't run 700 anywhere so it's not like it should be anticipated that 700 will be running or anything after the fact.
@jimmyhook48522 жыл бұрын
@@TrainsNStuff True. True. But hey: I did remember that was the plan though; Get 700 up and running, via if just stationary or what not (just so that 4449 isn't the only one. ;3) and then turn the focus on towards 197. :)
@ChrisJones-gx7fc2 жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhook4852 I've been thinking 197 should run excursions on the P&W. It would seem like a perfect excursion locomotive for them. ORHF could lease it to them for trips throughout the year, running to and from various locations across their system for different events.
@jimmyhook48522 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisJones-gx7fc That could work out :3 It would give 197 the great chance to stretch her wheels for the first time in so many years. :)

Looking at this post and up to the time 4449 was taken off the holiday express run. I was curious to knowing how 4449 damage the track to the state when she was sidelined while going at such a slow pace. but I guess even a locomotives weight regardless of the speed does prove to show the damage

@@aaron-prime117 Is it possible to make donations to fix the tracks they use. Because I know that it was reported that 4449 and 700 be damaging the tracks
@aaron-prime117Ай бұрын
@@TrainLover-wt9ix well the most I can say is that I’ve never seen 700 on the holiday express and it was always for 4449. In Terms of donation to fix the track it could be possible if they accept the donations for that piece to. Or you could email the museum about that and see what they say if the donations are possible for that too. As for the tracks they use for it having a lighter locomotive is better suited since locomotives like 197 and Polson Logging #2 are mostly branch based it makes more sense to use their kind of size for a museum special like this
