Really goes to show you what a 26 inch barrel can do. These manufacturers need to take note. You can go out and buy a $5000 6lb carbon fiber 7PRC with a 20 inch barrel and it will leave so much powder unburnt you will be forced to use a faster powder, along with sacrificing up to 150FPS, but you still get to eat the recoil of that light platform... yet they sell these for 5K and they are hard to keep in stock! Told you. I was spot on in my comment to your short about this. I reloaded and shot the 7RM for almost twenty years. It is a phenomenal cartridge, and its abilities far surpass anything offered in a factory loading. The only reason I migrated to the 300WM was a larger bullet pool in .308 projectiles. As I’ve stated before, the PRC doesn’t offer enough (in my opinion) to switch platforms. You can absolutely get 3000 out of a 7RM, and accuracy can be obtained fairly cheaply. Far cheaper than a new rifle in 7PRC. Good job, Austin!

Long story short - I may be moving DOWN to the 7mag if I can get those 195 Bergers to stabilize instead of shooting 212 grainers out of my 300 RUM. To get a 195 berger to 2950-3000 fps with a 7mm rem mag or a 7 prc will require very strong premium brass as pressures will be over 70k psi if not substantially higher. Saami max is usually 60 to 62k which is the max that most factory loads are at. For people wanting to shoot a 195 bullet out of a 7mm cartridge, a 7 stw, 28 nosler or wildcats like a 7-300 prc or 7-300 norma are the most logical choices, burning 75 to 85 grains of powder. There are very few instances when a shooter needs more than a 175 or 180 grain bullet in a 7mm rem or 7 prc unless its to bang steel at 1000 plus yards. These cases are just not burning enough powder to justify a 195 at reasonable pressures. N570 is a great powder for overbored or heavy for caliber bullets. Thanks again for the vid.

Browning is increasing the twist rates on several traditional cartridges, as well as providing longer throats and magazines. Ron Spomer mentioned he had gotten the news at ShotShow several months back. Turns out they are going to bring some of these traditional cartridges into the 21st Century. At the time they were planning on doing the 270 Winchester, 243 Winchester, 7 mm Remington Magnum, and possibly the 300 Winchester. If you ask me, they have Hornady in their crosshairs. This move would make some of Hornady’s latest cartridges irrelevant.

Hornady has a podcast around here somewhere where they talk about the design of the 7 PRC. The idea was to have a SAAMI off the shelf cartridge and riflle with performance akin to these custom chambered, long magazined, fast twist 7mm Rem Mag rifles. You proved the point by finding a 7mm Rem Mag rifle with longer than typical magazine and an 8" twist instead of the SAAMI 9.5" twist. Yes, there are some factory 7mm REM Mag rifles out there with faster twists, longer magazines, and probably even with modified chambers, but there is no consistency between manufacturers and no guarantee that any other off the shelf 26" barreled 7mm Rem Mag could do what you just did. I don't recall Hornady ever saying that a design goal was to match or beat 7mm Rem Mag in velocity in a rifles and loadings, only that it would be similar on average. I'm not sure when velocity became the only metric by which we measure a cartridge by.
@ReloadingWeatherby2 ай бұрын
Hornady designed the 7mm PRC with one powder... RL-26. Why did they do that? Because they wanted it to be faster and "better" than the 7mm Rem mag and the 6.8 Western. Kind of a bad move on Hornady... seeing how they can't get RL-26 anymore. Now their factory ammo is only going 2800-2850 FPS. As a reloader I do focus on velocity as a big metric. As long as the gun isn't a lemon I can get any cartridge to shoot extremely well. So how do I differentiate? Velocity. There is nothing wrong with the 7mm PRC, it's a good cartridge...
@alfredsturdivnat92672 ай бұрын
@@ReloadingWeatherby Have you tried 7mm PRC with Federal Terminal Ascent 175 gr, Federal ELD X 175 gr? My understanding is the Federal loads produce the Hornady advertised velocities with the appropriate barrel length. Also, how do the 7 rem mags' chamber tolerances compare to that of the 7 PRC? The theory is the tighter tolerances of the PRCs and the 6.8 Western produce better accuracy.

I remember watching Steve Hornady specifically say the PRC lineup is not the fastest, not the loudest, not kicka$$ velocity or blowing doors off with power, rather, their lineup tweaked similar existing cartridges for accuracy and efficiency and to challenge any other cartridge to outperform, where performance is not just velocity. The premise of the 7PRC was to create a more efficient and performance oriented cartridge, not to push the limits of muzzle velocity but to achieve pushing a long for caliber bullet like the 175 ELDX to 3000fps in a 22 to 24" barrel. They reached their goal when they had Reloder 26 powder. Federal ELDX ammo also clocks at 3000fps in 24" barrels, mine anyway.

Good Video. I would like to add a few points to watch for with regards to pressure signs. Craters in the primer can be caused by too much clearance between the firing pin and the surrounding walls of the bolt. Therefor in some rifles, craters are not indicative of over pressure. When checking for pressure signs it is important to measure the case diameter just above where the solid bottom of the case is. Most recommend to take that measurement at .200" above the bottom of the case. Measuring this dimension cannot be done with a digital caliper. This requires a quality 0 to 1" micrometer and proper technique to achieve an accurate measurement. Over pressure will cause the case diameter to grow in that area. Extreme over pressure signs often show ejector marks on the brass and hard bolt lift. Immediately stop and lower your charge weight if either of these two signs occur. The 7 Rem Mag is often criticized because of the belted case. IMHO the belted case is not a negative so long as the reloader understands headspace and how to adjust your full length sizing die correctly. I haven't searched KZbin for a video on this procedure but I would guess there are several available.

When the cartridge head spaces on the Belt it actually holds the cartridge in the center of the chamber. It can't be pushed to the side by the extractor it can't be pushed to the top or lay on the bottom and misalign the bullet to the bore.

With the exception of the 300 PRC. That thing is a beast. It’s a better 300 win mag for sure. But the same can’t be said for the 7 PRC compared to the 7 mag.
@Accuracy1st2 ай бұрын
If you take a 7PRC, 7RemMag, 7WSM, 7-300WinMag, handload for all the same bullet as fast as you can get it with whatever powder you need, all have a 26" barrel, and you have one that is definitely faster than the next down to the slowest one and there's a 40fps spread from #1 to #2 and so on down to the slowest (160fps slower than the fastest), it's fair to say faster beats slower. But lets say the slowest one shoots quarter min with insane frequency where the 3 that are faster shoot 1.5MOA with less than ideal ES/SD but that quarter minute rifle has single digit ES/SD. Which one do you prefer? I'm taking the snail - the turtle, the one lacking the most at the muzzle. Of course we all want the fastest to be the most accurate though.

So.... 7 WSM is the winner?
@Accuracy1st2 ай бұрын
@@ReloadingWeatherby For me, for hunting, the winner is whatever rifle shoots best in all aspects regardless of cartridge, even if it is the slowest. If I bought a few 7RemMags, 7PRCs, 280AIs, 7WSMs, tested them all to the best of my ability and some just didn't meet my expectations, they will either be sold or possibly converted to a spec build. Lets say I had a string of bad luck in terms of reliable, repeatable accuracy with 2 of 3 rifles, a 7PRC, 7RemMag, and a 280AI with the 280AI being overly impressive and I have an elk tag. The 280AI is going on that hunt as primary.

IF you have the larger mag so you can load it long. It will also burn the crap out of your barrel, when compared to more modern designs. Also, taming the reloading considerations are less complicated for the PRC. I have no dog in this fight, but this isn't exactly clear cut.
@ReloadingWeatherby2 ай бұрын
@@userJohnSmith Let me get this straight... the longer throat or free bore only negatively effects the older 7mm Rem mag and somehow the longer throat in the 7mm PRC isn't a problem? Taming the reloading considerations are less complicated? What does that even mean? Are you trying to say the 7mm PRC is easier to load for?
@userJohnSmith2 ай бұрын
@@ReloadingWeatherby You have fewer, or at least more traditional datums to worry about, so yes it is, technically easier to load for. Obviously it's just a learning curve and a short one but simpler is always better. And yes the PRC is more efficient because the combustion chamber is better suited to long barrel life. The fact that the 7mag is burning more powder to get where it's going doesn't help. The differences are minor and so are the velocity benefits. Your perfectly fine either way.

🕵♂️ What You Should Be Able To "Conclude" With Quarter Minute Magnums Video is ACCURACY is Mostly About The Barrel and Not The Chamber (Even Though a Custom Rifle Chamber Can Often Improve Your Accuracy)! In The Case of The 7mm prc Having a Higher Pressure Rating vs. The 7mm Remington Magnum Having a Slightly Larger Powder Capacity, Actually VELOCITIES Will Still Come Down To The Individual Barrel! Part of me wants to go with a 7 RM because I know that factory ammo is available everywhere vs the 7 PRC. Unfortunately you have made an identical video to the one you complained about. A good play on words using the term ‘factory’ to trick people into thinking your browning has a standard saami barrel 😂 Your Browing rifle is not saami spec and is the same as the custom rifle. It’s a pity you didn’t do a ‘factory’ standard saami spec 7mag. You could have shot the heaviest projectile the saami 7mag will stabilize and compared them. That would make a good video. Anyway love your content keep up the good work. Mike from New Zealand.

@ReloadingWeatherby2 ай бұрын
I'm actually going to push back your claim. Browning didn't make a custom chamber for the 7mm Rem mag. It's still a SAMMI Chamber. All they did was put a faster twist on it and a longer magazine. If doing that makes it a wildcat... than my 300 WBY is also a wildcat because I have a 1in10 twist instead of a 1in12. Modern 308 Win and 30-06 rifles are now wildcat cartridges I guess because of the faster twist.

@@ReloadingWeatherby I think if you can fully form the case you can achieve those numbers with lower pressures. With 175gn elite I have 77 grains in the case and still hear air in it. To get a perfectly formed cases on my 7 mag. I seating jam with a reduced load and it took 3 firings to get it fully blown out. Then I sent it off to whidden and had a hydro die made. I now hydro the brass then size it .002 under on headspace. This got me 88 grains of H2O on the norma brass. The best way to know if your over pressure is how long the primer pocket makes it. My hornady brass with Retumbo was 4 firings. I am hoping with Norma and n570 I can comfortably shoot 3000fps and keep my pockets. I rebuilt the GRT profile for 7 mag to be the full max chamber. I don't think this is a good comparison because you're comparing Muzzle velocity only without consideration of barrels varying fast/slower from barrel to barrel. If you're going to give a comparison you need to compare across them board: #1 (Consistent accuracy) #2 (Consistent ES's & SD's) #3 (Muzzle velocity knowing each barrel can be faster/slower than the next) #4 (Recoil mitigation) #5 (Amount of components used to load the cartridge and overall cost to load them) #6 (Is factory ammunition available) #7 (Barrel life) #8 (SAAMI spec vs custom chambers) #9 (Optimal powder based on cartridge) #10 (Is brass abundant for these cartridges) etc... Once you compare them both across the board then you'll have a better idea which one may be superior over the other. Looking forward to seeing what your comparison between the two cartridges consist of.
