I am an old fart, age 65. I never had a 7mm Mag. I was taught reloading at a young age. I got into studying the load manuals. Yes, I looked at velocity, grains of powder to get there, and absorbed as much as I could. My Dad gave me a used, beat up 30-06 built on an old Mauser action he got from a guy as partial payment for some carpentry work he did for a guy. I still have that old gun. It is just fine. I drilled and tapped it for a scope in my 20s. I have two other 30-06 rifles, a CDL Rem and Winchester. In those days everyone had a 30-06. We did not have all the cartridges that are out today. The cartridge has killed all the deer and hogs I have hunted in my state, Texas. It had enough legs to make the once in a long while long shot. I never went to states for bigger animals like elk, moose, bears, etc., just south Texas whitetails and hogs. I know quite a few people that had 7mm ag guns over the years. They all seemed to retire it for a more moderate cartridge. Many of these guys went for the 243 or 308. They are good deer rounds for our smallish deer, doubles as a coyote tool also. The same can be said for the 30-06 too. I still use old home-made 30-06 because I own it, it is paid for, it works, it is still accurate, AND my Dad gave it to me when we were going through some serious economical difficulties when I was growing up at that time.

My 1990 Browning A-bolt Stalker BOSS Left Hand in .7mm Rem Mag has taken 168 big game animals in 14 states, 3 countries and 2 continents. Our load of choice for many years now has been the Hornady GMX 139 grain copper bullet. From Black Wildebeest to Rocky Mountain Elk, Black Bear to Blacktails, the caliber and rifle combo has served me very well indeed. And yes Ryan, thank you for admitting it is a fine cartridge for hunting.

What kind of groups can you get out of your a bolt? I have a 92 a bolt stainless without the boss. I struggle to get MOA, more like 1.25 or 1.5.

My gun shoots .75 to 1 moa groups with these shells. The average velocity is 3183 from my gun with the BOSS attached determined by recording chronograph results from shooting 30 rounds at 1500 feet elevation. I limit my shots on game to inside 400 yards. I have recovered slugs from wildebeest, zebra, elk, black bear and wild boar. The GMX had excellent expansion and weight retention, drove through bone without issue and is suitable at 139 grains for everything but brown bears, moose and eland in my opinion.

@@EatingWild First off, glad the hunting distance police are here to set things straight. Wasn't sure how far I could shoot. Thanks for simplifying things for me. 2nd, "a bullet is a bullet" is insane... as if bullets don't vary wildly in diameter, length, weight, material, construction, spin rate, and speed. 3rd, how did you come up with an arbitrary 500 yards. Is that based on your skill? The skill of a new 13 year old shooter? The skill of an elite military sniper? Training must not matter, since your definite and magical number is the same for everyone. And 4th, nobody in this comment was talking about hunting distance. You just have some religious mission about your point that you have to make it anywhere. Anyone: "This is some great BBQ." You: "Yeah, but if it were 501 yards away from me, I wouldn't be shooting at it." Which, by the way, is a huge red flag and makes everyone less likely to listen to what you say.

But all I am trying to say is the difference in said performance especially when it comes to let's say the old 7mms vs the new 7mms. The differences are not big enough to mark it as a huge difference. Literally trying to squeeze water from a stone. I swear people take their calibers way too seriously and what they think they know. Overreacting over someone's opinion and trying to force yours. At the end of the day it's all opinion with numbers at the end.

In about 2000 I loaded a 100 round box with 7 Mag ammo for my best friend. It pushed a 160 Nosler partition to 3100fps with no signs of excessive pressure. This fall he fired the last 4 rounds of that 23 year old ammo. 2 shots on paper to confirm zero, and 2 dead deer. I’ll be loading him another hundred rounds for the next 23 years. Shoots a lot flatter than the 30 caliber loads of similar billet design. It has killed elk, mule deer, and tons of whitetail deer. His Browning a bolt rifle always prints the first 2 shots in the same hole and the 3rd shot about a half inch high and right. It is an easy cartridge to load and hot rod beyond the loading manuals.

Having multiple 7 mm cartridges starting at 7 x 57 through, 280 Ackley improved and 7 mm rim mag If I want a little light pleasant shooting, I take the 7 x 57 very good for introducing new shooters. My favourite hunting rifle at the moment is the 280 but I still run 165 grain projectile. I think this is a sweet spot for this cartridge With the 7 mm Remington Magnum I don’t like to run anything lighter than 170 grain projectile because this is where it starts to pull away from the other 7 mm that I have and I find it far more pleasant shooting the 300 Winchester which I have had Two of and still have one. Also very happy to run 180 grain to 185 grain in my 7 mm Remington Magnum, where I really do think it starts to shine

YOU may not need anything new to get it done, but the cartridge design is 60 years old and firearms technology has come a long way and we've got better case designs that eliminate that god awful belt. It was great when it came out, but it just can't do it for long heavy BC projectiles. Target shooters particularly demand better that a different 7mm cartridge can provide that 7mmRM just can't.

@@amym828 less than 1 percent of the shooters on the planet can consistently hit a 12 inch target beyond 500 yards. There are many classics rifles experts can used out to 1000 yards. 270, 3006, 300 Winmag, 308, 7mm Rem Mag, 243, 6.5 Jap, just to name a few. That said, I guess the more cartridges we have, the better off the 1 percenters will be.

Depends on what you want to do. I am old enough to remember where 2 MOA was considered good rifle accuracy. Ryan's 300 Win Mag, for example has a custom barrel with a match-style chamber and longer than standard magazine. In other words it is now a custom rifle that only lives up to its potential with handloaded ammo. The advantage of some of the more modern cartridges is that you can buy a rifle and ammo at a retail store that otherwise would require a custom barrel and handloading.

I dragged my Remington 700 chambered in 7mm Rem Mag out of the safe for this years deer hunt. Almost forgot how heavy that rifle is but I still love it. As expected, it harvested a large doe with a high shoulder shot, drop-on-the-spot hit. I've been on an AR deer/elk/bear/hog hunting quest for years now (because the gun control types say the AR is not used for hunting)...308 and 6.5 CM (AR10), 6.5 Grendel, 300 Blackout, 350 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, and last year with a Ruger SFAR 308. It was nostalgic hauling that 700 around this year. She's dropped critters from Canada to Texas and East to West coast. Will aways be a huge fan of the 7MM Rem Mag.

Because it doesn't. While it is true that with modern powders and bullets, a 280 AI can do what the 7mm Rem Mag did in the 1960's, the 7 RM has improved too. The BIG question, really, is if the the 280 AI is good enough. If it does what you want it to do, the 280AI can be the better choice.

I hunt with the 300 wsm but my second choice is the 7 rem mag! Hunting 60+ years as well as reloading and collecting I can hunt with ANY cartridge and think the 7 rem mag is one of the best and that’s why it has done so good! I have a 1963 in 7 rem mag and the big 7 as it was called end the rule of a lot of great cartridges! I still love the 30-06 though and still one of the very best for how old it is.

@cameronjaeger but I'm not comparing the 7rm to the 30-06. We were comparing the difference in the 30-06 and the 300wm and the difference in the 7RM and the 7mm08. The felt recoil in the 30-06 is 26ish ft-lbs. It's 28-32 for the 300 WM, depending on rifle weight. The 7RM is 25-27 ft-lbs, while the 7mm08 is somewhere around 14-18 ft-lbs. That's a huge difference!

The 7mag is super in efficient. The pinnacle of 7mm chamberings are the 280AI 1st. And the 7mm08. The 7mag slightly beats them in velocity but does so at the cost of way more powder n recoil .

You have no idea what you’re talking about. I run a 175 in a 22” barrel at 2975 and I run a 195 at 2912 in a 26” barrel. And no I am not over pressure. Buy quickload and learn how much true case capacity it has and did you even know it had .115 of freebore? Bet not.

Ron Spomer has a video where he says that if he was limited to only one cartridge to hunt everything it would be the 7mm Remington Magnum. That is very telling in my opinion. Growing up in Oregon my dad was a big Winchester guy and had guns in .243, .308, 300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag and when I was younger I hunted with his .243 Sako. When I was older he wanted me to have a rifle of my own that I could use for everything so he bought me a Savage 110 in 7mm Remington Magnum and I used it on Coyotes, Blacktail Deer and Roosevelt Elk shooting mostly 175 grain Nosler Partition hand loads at 2950 ft/sec.

Having grown up in oregon is great but we have terrible gun laws! I was very lucky my fathers good friend was a good friend of John Nosler when they were in Ashland and started reloading his ammo for his pre64 because the handload bullets were coming apart in the 06 which is about the same as the 300 H&H that John was using and the Partition change the whole industry in bullets. The 7 rem mag is a fantastic cartridge and even better reloaded to its full potential.

I have hunted with a 7 rem mag killed several deer and 4 elk with it. One major point missed here is the 175 grain spitzers that were available even in the old days. This in the world before bonded/monolithic bullets put the 7mm Remington magnum significantly above the .270 in getting deep enough penetration. I know that 150 grain bullets are the most common but if you look you can usually find 175 grain bullets and you all acted like they didn't exist.

I got a 7 PRC this year. I really liked the specs and I have liked the performance, so far. I have heard it said that if you already have 7 RM, you probably don't need the 7 PRC. Another person said, if you want to build custom everything and really enjoy handloadng, get the 7 RM. If you want a factory rifle that shoots good with factory ammo, get the 7 PRC. Thing is, people are already changing recipes and trying different bullet styles and weights in the 7 PRC. I have seen the 7 RM bring down an elk. But I also know a guy that doesn't need more than just his one .30-06.

I have a vintage 1977 BAR, Belgian made chambered in 7mm Rem Mag. It was a gift from a good friend about 10 years ago. Soft shooting and very accurate. I load 160 grain projectiles at 3,000 fps. Excellent results. The rifle is beautiful.

Great podcast. Ryan glad to hear that you bought a 270. I have 5 of them in my gun case. But I also have two son who also share/use the cabinet. One of them is an x-bolt that shoots 3/4 MOA. My best shooting gun is chambered in 7mm and can shoot 1/2 MOA. That gun has a muzzle break and a 1 in 9 twist. Sweet to shoot. Topped with a Vortex Viper 4-16x50 HSLR. Thanks for sharing.

First gun I bought as a 16 year old was a Remington 700 action and had Jarret build me a "bean field rifle" off this action in 700 Rem Mag. Still got that rifle today and I still occasionally rock it in the field although its had a couple of barrels since then. I was suffering "magnumitus" at the time, it had the flat shooting velocity with high BC bullets and didnt recoil as much as the 300 Win Mag. Today I am a lot older, not near the masochist I used to be and I appreciate the more efficient cartridges like 308 and 6.5 Grendel for hunting these days.

Use to feel the same way about the 270. Then a friend was selling a nice Rem 760 270 for a price that couldn't be walked away from. Great wood. Excellent blueing. Open sights. Extra mags. Most importantly, I didn't have pump action centerfire. I now own a 270. Couldn't be happier. To be honest, it was that the package overrode my irrational prejudice for the cartridge. Now if I could just get over it for the 6.5 creedmore...

I absolutely love my Remington 700 BDL custom deluxe 7 REM MAG. It’s a sweet classic hunting rifle. Had my gunsmith free float that barrel, aluminum pillar bed and glass bed the receiver and I threw in a timney Calvin elite trigger. Topped it off with an Arken SH4 6-24. It absolutely rocks. With the ammo it likes its absolute laser beam even with that relatively thin hunting profile barrel.

I have one hunting rifle. Remington BDL in 7mag. I live and hunt in Northwest Montana. One caliber for all the hunting I will ever do in life. All mag wells arent the same lenght in 7mag. Throat accordingly. Would 3100 fps? 3200fps? Make you happy? I know people who take elk every year with a 7mm-08. I will be getting a 7-08 with a youth stock for my wife and my son and I might take it whitetail hunting a little. Be a lightweight break compared to what I'm used to. I took my first Montana whitetail about 10 years ago with my Glock 31 in 357 SIG. Over the years some more fell victim to a 270. Sweet shooter! Then I had a chance to buy a BDL from my uncle and I might have shot it as a kid. He had 2, one was sold we don't know which one I shot but I like to think it was this one. It's a bit long and a bit heavy. I'm 47 so I wasnt born into the 7mag craze and have seen many calibers take game in my life. 30-30 more than any. I killed my first two deer with a 220 swift. it's shot placement first not caliber. I liked what weights the 7mag had to offer and the length I could push if I wanted. For now it has done everything I have asked. I go 6-01 270lbs and she kicks the s%#t out of my soldier. But when it's getting dark and foggy with sleet moving in and you didn't see where he ran after you shot. You close your eyes and see where that shot broke and realize you made a great shot and not to worry cause he didn't go far. In grizzly country I trade in the Glock for a SBH In 480 with 410 grain hardcast..she's a sweetie too!! I would like to build a chassis gun in 7mag down the road for poking holes in paper at range. I have a 24 pound rifle to poke big holes in paper.. Cool show. I think you have to look at max handloads and max b.c. bullets to compare fair. In all honesty 308 is a great cartridge but everyone I know shot one since I was 12 so I never grafted to them. My black sheep caliber.

I got a 270 a while back. It's a beautiful old Birmingham Small Arms made in England back in the early 60s. The iron sights are knocked out on it so I got it for a song. It has taken me months to find and acquire rings to mount anything to the 19mm dovetail. It's a very cool old gun and I'm happy to take it into the mountains.

3 very important introductions were made in 1962. The 7mm Remington Magnum. The Remington 700 bolt action. Me🤣. I have a 7 built on a Remington 700 action with a 26” Kreiger 1-8” Sendero contour. My first three shots at the range after a probably not needed barrel break in cleaning routine went into a .164” group. Close to 1/2” with 5 shot groups. Barnes 168LRX Re 26 at 3035fps. With the NF 5.5-22x56. This is a very heavy rifle but it shoots

It's nice to hear the extremely close comparison with the good old 7 rem mag and the modern 7 prc. It would also be really interesting if you could look at the comparison to the old .260 rem vs the new 6.5 creedmoor. Same barrel twist and the same bullet heads.

All you guys that think 3006 has all the performance of a 7 mag are nuts! lol. The 7 has roughly a 200 fps advantage across bullet weights and all that with a more efficient bullet. That’s a big difference! The design itself may not be efficient and it is more expensive but it without a doubt outperforms 3006 or similar cartridges

Thats a little on the low end for the 150CX. I’m running that quite easy 3150fps out of a 26”. 162s run around 3000-3050 but then your getting the added BC. its a hammer on moose and i was a die hard 300 winny guy for a very long time until i came to the dark side. when the barrel goes ill go 7prc specifically for that new 160CX bullet. it’s impressive

Ryan needs a Remington 700 C Grade 7mm Rem Mag. Mark needs a 6mm Rem, 7mm Rem Mag and 8mm Rem Mag for a three rifle battery for anything but the Big 5 Dangerous African Animals. Jim needs a .17 HMR in a Ruger 77 with Green Laminate Stock 24 inch barrel. Merry Christmas now you Get something Awesome !

Factory loads, as is common with OLD cartridges, do NOT represent what the cartridge can do if you don't have to take into account old guns. Steel metalurgy is better, but the brass is also better. My load in my modern rifle is a Nosler 175 Gr. Accubond LR on a upper end load doing 2915 fps. That's only 100 fps behind the 7mm PRC and that's because the 7mm Rem is handicapped by it's 2000 PSI case spec from SAAMI. While I agree that the belt isn't necessary these days, it's also not an issue for me or anyone with some experience reloading. I've been reloading nearly 20 years and my 7mm Mag has never had any issues with it anyway.

guys I live in Canada and when that exact bullet came out I said I have the perfect gun for that bullet and the gun Is a Tikka 7mm Mag western super light special edition and I wont lie shot 2 muhles and 2 whitetail and on moose with that cartridge.Never been happier

I moved to Alaska 40+ years ago. Originally from the East Coast. The first rifle I bought, when I could afford one, was a Weatherby Vanguard with the Sako full length bolt slide in 7mm Rem Mag. I have shot pretty much everything up here with a 7mm Mag...including Grizzly. Those old Vanguards were exceptionally well built and exceptionally accurate. I loaded 175 grain Speer Mag Tips (economy version of their Grand Slam...no longer available). The bullet went through both sides of pretty much everything I shot with that round...with the exception of the grizzly where it broke both shoulders and lodged inside the off side hide in a classic mushroom. If anything, I was shooting too hard a bullet. As far as accuracy, that round sighted in at 1 1/2" high at 100 yards was dead-on at 300. I could cloverleaf 3 rounds at 100 yards consistently. There were times when I shot my first 2 rounds and I thought the second shot either missed the paper entirely or went through the first hole. Recoil-wise, with a muzzle break, it's like shooting a 243. Without, it is a sharp recoil and my rifle came up causing me to lose sight of the animal. As far as accuracy, that gun ruined me. People talk about achieving 1 MOA accuracy like that is some form of acceptable. I won't rest until I can get 1/2" groups at 100 yards. I have other rifles in other calibers, but I still have and use that rifle and it is still just as accurate and will achieve 1" groups easily with factory ammo. I only have a few Mag Tips left and will have to work up a new load.

Mark, I looked at 375 and settled on 416 rem. I have my perfect two gun safari quiver, M70 FWT 30-06 and M70 safari 416, because the 416 is still flat enough to reach out but offers considerably more energy over 375. For a one gun safari, 375. For two gun I’d split them up more. And that 416 is great fun to shoot on steel in the meantime

You just had to bring it up. I have a Browning A Bolt in 280 Remington. You are right. I can load right up to 7mag velocity with less powder if I need it. However, my rifles sweet spot and my all around load is a 160gr at 2600fps. From Red Stag on down, it has been an amazing rifle and caliber combo.

that 150 at 3000 fps is anemic I get 3100 fps with a 162 gr with no pressure in both of my 7mm rem mags. a Savage high country and a Browning x bolt speed LR. probably could get more but the accuracy is great at 3100 fps

I recently purchased a used but like new, never fired Remington 700 XCR chambered in 7 mag off the used rack at the local sporting goods store for $600. I haven't checked the numbers, but I assume it is a recent manufacture "undesireable" Remington. It shoots a 1/2" group at 100 yds with factory 150gr Remington Core Lokts. I am very impressed with this rifle. I now have 100 rounds of new brass ready for reloading. I have several friends who use 1 caliber for everything, and they are either 7 rem mag or 300 win mag. I have always wanted a 7 mag, and this one does not disappoint. I can't wait to use it on game, and to see what it will do at the range. Go buy a quality rifle chambered in 7 PRC and see what it costs! And ammo and brass for 7 mag is way more available and less expensive than 7 PRC. Ryan's recent comparison proves the 7 PRC is a marketing scheme aimed at "off the shelf long range shooters", but it does not replace the venerable 7mm Remington Magnum!

If you are careful about your process with slower powders you can definitely get a decent amount more out of what most manuals want to say is the upper limit of the 7 rem mag is. It really does have a lot of the same problems the 30-06 does when it comes to factory ammunition and what careful reloading can get you to in comparison.

The factory loads are limited to SAAMI max pressures and minimum chamber size (which increases pressures). Remington, for some reason tended to set the max pressures of cartridges lower than some others. The 7 Rem Mag's max pressure is 61,000 psi (transducer) as opposed to the older 270's 65,000. A lot of rifles can handle higher pressures before showing "pressure signs" on the brass. The Hornady guys mentioned that they once tested a common loading of a cartridge in a test barrel and it was 9,000 psi over SAAMI max. No pressure signs and no reports of rifle damage in the field.

What you heard is absolutely true. The reloading manuals from the sixties have the ole 7 mag loaded with 67grs of 4831. Nowadays that same load is 63 grs. For years I loaded 160 gr pills over 67 grs of 4831. No pressure signs and grouped good. Got a chronograph in the early 2000's as a gift. The Ole 7 mag was clocked at 3250 fps. I was shocked. That is in the territory of the then 7mm STW. The cartridge is fast and anyone who tells you otherwise is not telling the true story. Now factory loadings over the years has reduced the speed, maybe for liability reasons or maybe for marketing to promote new cartridges, I really don't know why. If it was anemic as this podcast tries to portray then it would have died years ago, companies don't produce products which do not sell, especially products conceived in 1962. Food for thought. :)

The Sammi specs you list are true, but you have things a little confused when it comes to factory ammo and Sammi specs. Factory ammunition is loaded to not exceed those specs and rarely to meet them because if you have one cartridge tested out of a lot that goes over you usually have to scrap that lot and start over. The Hornady podcast does have some interesting information on it and I do believe their transducer test that you are referring to, but you have to be aware that is almost exclusively a marketing podcast to point you at their products. Hornady is pretty well known for having very consistently downloaded their factory ammo between 5-10% of their marketing numbers and sometimes more depending on the specific load.

Another little bit of food for thought as well is the called it a well known hand load or a generic one that wasn’t worked up for that test barrel which isn’t going to bomb one of those rigs. That being said that is the last sort of thing you want to do for any rifle all action+barrel combos are different and behave different. That is why you always start low and work up slow. Never mix and match hand loads made for one gun with another gun because it will behave differently in every gun. I have 6.5 grendel loads that would likely shear off lugs on one of my AR uppers within 100 rounds or so, but my howa mini is perfectly safe with them and I can shoot them all day long. Bottom line is know your equipment and be careful with firearms a cartridge isn’t much more than a precision pipe bomb inches from your face so treat that fact with respect.

Mark good choice in the early 700 I have the second year and they came with a stainless barrel with copper on top of that then blued because the stainless couldn’t be blued! I am giving that gun to one of my sons best friend who has only ever hunted with a 30-06 auto Remington!

It's the same with the 7PRC and 300PRC. They're nearly interchangeable. My guess is that it's a marketing thing. 300 for the 30cal crowd and the 7 for the metric crowd. Both accomplish the same job equally as well.

Mark the 375 is great for elk and it’s recoil is not that bad more of a push! I am getting my sons into the 375 because it is still available especially if you reload and is a stopper on elk! Custom build on like I am doing then you can enjoy the process of the build too!

It is an awesome hunting cartridge, only problem I've had is it's hard to get consistent accuracy, maybe it was the rifle I had. My best load was a 140gr at 3300fps .75 MOA

i actually shot competition with my left hand savage 7rem mag at our ne okla range against the new 243 heavy barrels and a 22 cal rail gun with a three inch thick barrel that took four guys to put on the table was silly of me but it was the only rifle i owned. three shots inside a dime was pretty good for a mag. still does it sixty years later

Sectional density is different now with homogenious bullets. When I was young, the 175gr was highly touted in the seven maggie. While it had a lot of SD, just as importantly, it ran slower than lighter bullets, while having more energy than the lighter bullets loaded to similar speeds. Now even heavier bullets are made for it to increase BC, not SD. All for longrange shooting. Great for targets, but unwounded game animals deserve better. Original M700s had enough twist for the cup and core 175s, and enough for all copper 160s. These are all good for 500 yards. Far enough.

Even today, the advantage of the 7mm RM is it's availabillity. There are endless cartridge/bullet combination, Midway has 24 Available offerings and then 7-08 has 21. Will build my 1st 7MM next year and juggling between 280Ai, 7RM or if hotrod 28 Nosler. It will probably be 7RM in a 3.7-3.8" OAL Action/magazine to seat out longer bullets, bit faster carbon barrel twist, but 180 grns bullets max

My dad's 7mm Rem Mag, in a gorgeous '70s BDL, was what started my obsession with Remington, to the point I am branded with a green "R" on my left shoulder. I was a small kid and could still shoot dad's 7RM. I saw him take many deer even out to 435yds with a 154 Hornady Spire Point, I thought it was magic. We also have to concede that Gunwerks started by building custom Remington 700's in 7mm Rem Mag. Am I convinced already that the 7PRC is a better choice, yep, better mouse trap. Thanks Guys

One of my father good friend as a close friend of John Nosler when they first stared out in Ashland and was using the Partition even in non magnums because the bullets were even coming apart in the 30-06 when hand loaded. John hunted with a 300 H&H which in the factory load was about the same as the 06 being reloaded. The newer Accubond is actually better then the Partition in the new magnums at staying together in shots 200 yards or less. But by going heavier with the Partition in weight this helps a lot when shooting elk size game and larger at least in the 60+ years I have been using it!

i was in 45 ranch enterprises in miami okla when i asked the area rep from remington when was remington going to come out with a left hand mod 700. he looked me in the eyes and said NEVER. i went to gipsons store and bought a left hand savage mod 10 in 7mm rem. six months later remington announced the left hand mod 700. i was so mad i vowed never to buy a rem rifle. i dont know what year that was im sure someone can tell me but to this day i have kept that vow and my son still has that savage. OLDIE but goodie kinda stunned me then i remember im an oldie but goody. and before someone says savage never made a mod 10 well its still stamped on the rifle

@vortexnation sellier & bellot makes a 173gr spce round that is a nice heavy hitter. and the huge advantage to 7mm rem mag is that compared to just about everything in its comparative class (aside from 30-06), it is one of the cheapest to shoot. and for the performance you get, it checks more boxes than most other choices if you are looking for something similar to 30-06 "with a little extra"

However, today I stumbled upon a great deal on a used Bergara B-14 Ridge in 7 rem mag and bought it. Not sure which is gonna be the main squeeze yet, but now I have some options.

A 160 grain trophy bonded tip out of my 1-8 twisted 7mm rem mag doesn't mess around. Also add in a 175 grain soft point for close whitetails.

I hadn't had a 7RM in years until this month. A friend was looking to finance his PRC and asked if I could find a buyer for his 24" Ruger Stainless synthetic 7RM with a 4-12 Leupold (stainless by appearance). Asked what he wanted for it. "Six." He brought it to me. Great hard case, 40 rounds of EcoStrike ammo. I handed him what he asked for it. I certainly don't need it in the woods and swamps of Eastern NC, but a whole lot of folks here use it for tiny whitetail inside 200 yards. If I manage to get everything ready and sell the house, I will try to find a place better suited to its purpose. Somewhere neighbors are a long way off and Northern transplants don't call the Sheriff when I walk out the door with a rifle.

Companies like Hornady underload their loadings for older rounds like the 7 mm RM and then introduce their new rounds loaded to the gills and pretend they are better. The 7mm RM with a 1 in 8 twist does everything a 7 PRC can do easily.
