8-1-07 Siren Test Franklin County

This siren is located at US 23 and SR 665. The reason only one voice was done was because one of the sirens had a battery problem and each time the EMA tried to speak over the siren it would just send out the trouble codes.

a dual tone. it is what you hear when you dial a number on a phone. that is what they send out to activate some of the sirens over the radio. There is a video from this guy setting the sirens off. type in franklin county siren and click on the video of the guy at a desk with what looks like a typewriter. you will learn a lot from that.

Whelens apparently do not rotate a full 360 degrees. It will go CW, hit its stop point, go CCW than do the same once more. Guessing it has to do with the wiring inside the units.

actually the small piece at the back is ware the actuall speaker diaframs and voice coials are located the rest is the horns that amplify the sound from the actual speakers

No the little thing at the back is actually the diaphram, and the small funnel like tubes act as amplifiers untill they all reach the larger end. Like a trombone, or a trumpet.

They can be. IF they are maintained they are reliable but if not they are not.

does this have a resonating plate inside rather then a spinning device inside? it sounds like a air horn manipulated to sound like a siren

One of the batteries in one of the other sirens was dead and that was the trouble code.

The little tubes at the back are the actual sirens, the big funnel is just to amplify the sound. The voice is played over the Siren, but on the same speakers, their not coming from separate speakers.

no the bog thing is the projector and the tiny things are compression drivers (speakers)

It ocilates (spelling?) by rotating 360 degrees 1 direction stopping and rotating 360 degrees the other.

No they actually don't. The difference in pitch is from when Whelen changed to a different pitch when manufacturing their tone cards.

You can hear them from both the scanner and the siren itself. However, you'll only hear the DTMF tones through the siren when they do voice.

its too hard to tell what type but its a Whelen for sure don't know if its a 4000 series or B-Link series(both can do voice) vortex series can't do voice-hopes this helps

Franklin County doesn't have any Vortexes in their system. They have Whelen WPS-3016s and WPS-4004s.
