I had some wonderful volunteer pumpkins a couple years back. Thinking about growing them on purpose this year.

I really enjoyed this. One question: why was the pumpkin competition held in August? That's not long enough to get a pumpkin to its potential. Yet your guest never mentioned this curtailed growing time as a factor in coming in "only" 5th in the competition.

FrothingFanboy Thank you for your question. The reason it is in August is because that is when the Giant Pumpkin Contest is held at our local Champlain Valley Fair. There are additional contests later in the fall each year, such as Tunbridge Fair. For more information, see the Giant Vegetable Growers website: vermontgiants.tripod.com/

I'm having a difficult time growing female pumpkins, they usually yellow and drop off the vine before they even blossom. Is it lack of water doing this? I live in a super hot area of northern Nevada and the leaves wilt heavily. I use a couple of gallons, but they still appear stressed. I do fertilize with plenty of NPK. Anyway, very informative video.

That can be free stress from too hot of a temp. Or too much nitrogen. Get a soil test done and see what your levels are.
