@2:36 - "Visio heals this..." - how can I prevent it from healing? healing changes the sizes of the walls and so it turns into a very frustrating situation, having to spend hours to keep the size of the wall. It's a simple concept, just want to place 2 walls, perpendicular to each other, and I want to govern the location and size, but, leave it to Microsoft to make a simple function be so complicated and hard to find a solution to. I shut down all the Visual Aids option, but still, not solving my problem. Any ideas?

I tried locking a wall's width (length), but that didn't work. What I often do is layout guides (you pull them off of the rulers). I usually use the View > Macros > Add-Ons > Visio Extras > Move Shapes add-on to create copies of guides in the x- and y-directions, at precise offsets. This fits well with measuring a room and quickly "adding the lines according to your measurements". In the add-on, be sure to check the [X] Duplicate check box and click APPLY, not OK (because OK closes the form, then you have to go get it again...ugh). You can quickly lay-out a nice, precise "grid" of guides, then snap walls to that. They shouldn't change length, since the walls will snap/glue to the guides first and foremost.

I have the same problem. It's super frustrating and is adding an inordinate amount of time just making sure I can trust whats already been built because I'm constantly concerned dimensions have changed without me noticing. Visio is the worst tool for floorplans.

How do you click on a shape and get the square footage??

Look for the "Space" shapes in the Walls, Shell & Structure stencil. They have some built-in area functionality!
