What has added a heap of spend that's not producing is the uncertainty in some business realms. Sometimes, you can be practically giving Ferraris away, but if the boss won't allocate gas money in your budget, the Ferrari is a boat anchor. Something in Saas that is desperately needed still has a decent chance. But when budgets are being limited, it makes you want to crawl back into bed and wait for the 'up' part of the business cycle to show up. A side effect is, marketing skills that would be effective in almost any other business climate, may give the wrong signals right now, 'this isn't working' - that may not be accurate for a normal business climate despite the feeling of futility right now. it's sort of like trading. When the trades aren't going your way, you still play, but with a lower spend, lower risk, and keep an eye out for an improvement in the market. Chin up. Salesforce sold off huge a couple days back. Pretty wild out there right now. .

I have almost 10 years of experience in B2B SaaS marketing, and I can tell you that this advice is good but a bit outdated. There are new rules in this game right now, especially if you are a startup in a highly competitive niche.

Great episode, quick question: 17:24 when he says alternative posts he means “our SaaS vs competitor” type posts?
@GregDigneo

That's a different type of post, but still REALLY effective. When I say Alternative post, I mean "Best toggl alternatives" (if you're in the time tracking space) or "Best calendly alternatives" (if you're building a calendar app).

A great glimpse into the effective B2B marketing methods that catapulted a firm to major success, as well as a candid assessment of a plan that did not produce the expected results.
