ive lived in philippine ,hong kong and visit thailand every 3 months.my experience is malaysia has excellent food fusion of chinese,indian and thai and malay.they speak good english.they are friendly and the country has less emphasis on drinking and bars like thailand and philippines.i love penang.

Yes all Singapore dishes like Laksa (Malay for gravy noodles), chicken rice (originally from Ipoh Malaysia), Bak Kut Teh (which is a Cantonese dish originating from Klang, Malaysia), Char Kuey Tiow (Penang, Malaysia), Cendol (Malacca and Penang, Malaysia). So Malaysia has the original of these food. So very authentic food in Malaysia. Second to none.

If you wish to retire within South East Asia region, Malaysia is the best option because of the low cost of living. Plus, you can always vacation to Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia or Singapore as these countries are all within just a 2hours flight (max) from KL. So, you get best of all worlds. I am a Malaysian (from the southern city of Johor Baru, which is just 30minutes drive into Singapore). If you are a golfer, there's no place where you can play endless golf that's sooo cheap as comprared to those other countries.

You did explained to others key points for others wanting to retire in Malaysia in future. I been in/to Kuching Sarawak for number of years & traveled to Langkawi and KL & other locations while living in Kuching. I love the diversity of people, food etc. I mentioned Kuching (mysecond home) not being biases Kuching I got to learn the multicultural living with my second family, language etc. You are wondering where I am from? I am from down under in New Zealand we have are multicultural society as well I am no stranger to this diversity, with similar Western/Asian/Eastern and South Pacific values. As a KIWI born (New Zealander), with Cook Islands heritage my Asia south pacific parents come from. Never for get your grass roots. Malaysia has many benefits with pros and cons pending location in KZbin said. Yet I wish I can live in langkawi etc, So I selected Kuching / Boreno location for the slow pace in life,community (longhouse) and family environment. my life experience I can not explain unless you been inside the life of the villager other from retirement aspirations. In closing 2019 am I blessed in life to use my life experiences in "sharing the gift in giving" in business network and community projects in knowledge to others living in Kuchig during my time and return travel to NZ giving back. But, thank you for telling me about Boreno, I never considered it as being a destination but after you have shared your experiences there, I have turned my head. Yes, please understand that it's hard for me to understand the life of a villager, coming from a larger city myself, but while I was in Malaysia, I saw certain areas where people had less than the average North American, but they seemed really happy with what they had. Great video. How do you get to Langkawi and Penang resorts from KL? I am from the US. I am planning to travel either directly to KL or Singapore. I love those water bungalows. If you could recommend some of the best resorts in Malaysia that would be great. Hope they are easy to get to from the US or KL. I also plan on visiting Singapore again. I was there last year. @Brent Jay. You could check out my vlog on how to get from KL to Penang, link below. We actually ended up taking the bus, took 5hrs, but a popular way would be by train but you need to reserve online1-2 weeks prior to. We tried by just going to KL Sentral to reserve our train directly, it was unfortunately a no go, no choice but the bus, at that time. You could also take Air Asia as well, if you book beforehand it's cheaper. As for Langkawi, you could take Air Asia or just take a ferry from Penang to Langkawi. I'm not too sure about the resorts but we did well with choosing some great places just by using AirBNB. Anyway, check out my Malaysia vlog traveling from KL to Penang. If you want even further specifics, read the comment section of the vlog I provided below as well, you'll find comments from native Malaysians on how to get to KL to Penang with better solutions than what we traveled by. there is an airplane to most of the states in Malaysia. You can check National Careers such as MAS airlines and some of the low-cost airlines such as Maswings, Air Asia, Malindo Air, Firefly. If you are willing to travel by bus, train + ferry, you may see a lot of scenes too. Water Bungalow is in Sabah, Borneo. quite far to the east but again you can take a plane to Sabah State.

Actually going through the rules was good but a bit fast. I was very curious about medical since the title said "retirement" but saw very very little on that. The $400 is actually a mixture of eating out and at home as a couple. The portions are smaller than the average North American standard and you may even end up having another meal a day, adding to the expense.

@Linda Fukuyu. The reason for the picture, which is actually not in Thailand but in Malaysia, is from a previous vlog I had released. Many were actually debating whether it was an image from Thailand or Malaysia and I thought it would be interesting to include it in this vlog as well. Apparently there are Thai Malaysians, generations of them, in Malaysia. Many of whom knew it was an image in Malaysia and were proud.

@N Tran. We wrote down everything in a notebook but there were so many items and it was a mix of paying by cash and credit card. Was meaning to do a cost breakdown but saw how many items there were and got a bit lazy. Might put them all into a spreadsheet, another problem was that we might have written down the names of the items incorrectly but I could lump all the items under one category, like food etc. I'd like to attempt to be exact but it might end up to be messy. But, I could tell you, it was super, super affordable, even after eating out! We even had a lot of RM left over, which we are planning to use up, when we are back. Numbeo, I could say with certainty, is really, really surprisingly accurate! Contributions on average of over 5000 people.

Hey, public healthcare is available to everyone including expats, foreigners and tourists. Even for illegals..Registration for malaysian is Rm1 but for non malaysian is rm15. This is due to the subsidy which is fair for non malaysian to pay higher for public healthcare. Correction: non malaysian and non pr holders have the same freedom as malaysian, the correct one is you don't have the same rights! No right to vote as example. You have the freedom to religion, to speech, sexual preferences etc

Matthew, Capital gains are not taxed in Malaysia, except for gains derived from the disposal of real property or on the sale of shares in a real property company. If you"re not a Malaysian citizen, the rate is 30% if you're selling the property within 5 yrs, or 5% if you've owned it for longer than that.

For most Americans & Canadians, Mexico is the nearest and best place to RETIRE & be close to your children & grandchildren. Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Phillipines etc are all way too far! If you don't have children, then maybe one of the Emerging Tigers, where English is spoken by many people, will be appealing.

Some local languages are unfortunately very difficult (almost impossible to master) to learn, like Vietnamese and Thai for example. However, I would always make the effort and also expect everyone who migrates to do so. When choosing a country it is a very important point to me if I can already communicate with the people there or at least have a fair chance of getting to a B 2 level within a reasonable amount of time. I learnt 6 foreign languages, among them Bahasa Indonesia which is supposed to be very similar to Bahasa Malaysia, so this is a pro for sure. I would not dare to tackle Cambodian for example.

But, nasi lemak is a special name for a complete set dish - nasi (cooked with coconut milk), sambal, ikan bilis (anchovies), timun (cucumber) etc. Another example - 'teh tarik' x = pull tea, Nasi dagang x = commerce rice. Even google translate nasi lemak = nasi lemak (English)

I'm 78y/o and still quite fit, I do have the funds to get an MM2h visa but unlikely to spend the Aus $4400 monthly pension required as a single older man to get one. I don't spend that much in Australia and live quite comfortably. I don't like to put money in a bank other than an Australian bank. Maybe Aus $1200 p/m studio apartment rent and food, I can cook but do like to eat out often. Not a big drinker but I know that a bottle of Thai Samsung Rum costs about Aus $12 in Thailand, Aus$38 in Australia and more in Malaysia perhaps Aus $45 (outrageous). Of all the comments on these pages, they seem to avoid alcohol cost discussions...like I say I'm not a big drinker, yes as a retiree maybe 2/3/4 drinks a day but not always. My doctor says that's OK, good for me, 5/6 drinks not so good? What else can I spend my comfortable pension on? I know about food and rent and I'm a bit old to chase the ladies (but I'll have a go). To spend my leftover Aus $3000 per month I need about 3 girlfriends? or maybe more?... any answers?

It's called Hokkien mee in KL and Hokkien char in Penang (namely fried Hokkien noodle). Just like laksa in KL and many parts of southern Peninsula or Singapore, is called curry mee in the peninsula northern region

A nice promotion video. I recommend to come here and have a look by your own. The three cities he mentioned first, are the only acceptable places for European middle-class people. Most of the country is still third world style, especially the housing. And why is such a tremendous part of the population sooo fat? Food paradise? Yes, carbohydrates , chocolate and the like. And for those, who like scarecrows - come here, a lot of women are dressed like that. Petrodollars have washed in a certain welth to KL and some of the different sultanates, but with it ,corruption grew obviously. Ok, the visa regulations are the most comfortable in south-east Asia, but come and have a look first - I would say, that you get a better value for money in countries like Greece, Spain or Portugal, even though, they have disadvantages of their own.

I believe the corruption is very high (recall that the former PM Najib & his Family is found guilty on that infamous 1MDB Scandal) and there is political turmoil. IF an Expat is NOT a political person writing or talking about politics or corruption, then Penang Georgetown/Butterworth could be better than the noisy crowded KL. IF you want to express your opinion on the General Local/Regional Politics or Culture, the locals would frown upon you. They are mostly interested in getting your $$$, but want to curtail your Freedom of Speech/Writing/Tweeting, so beware!

Pierre Chang, you're so misinformed. The notion that as a gay in Malaysia one will get prosecuted is untrue, let alone being punished by stoning to death. Though not widely publicized, Malaysian gay communities live and work freely amongst other communities. Gay clubs and gay bars coexist with other clubs and bars from as early as early eighties. As of in many other countries, gay sex and gay relationship is best kept in the confines of one's private home.
