I personally will thank the donation senders for the altruism as viewers have greatly benefited from the review of these kind donations. The FR-301 is listed for 309.97 USD on the HakkoUSA website. These vacuum desoldering tools are never cheap, but every bit worth it for what they need to do. When taken care of, they last practically "forever." On a friendly note, do anything you can to prevent dropping the FR-301. From my experience, the plastic housing can be a bit fragile in certain places and expensive to replace.

That box from Iain Mason, you pronounced the name as "Lane". I work with an Iain, so I've already been corrected. It's actually more like "E-an". I also had the Animator as a child. > Yes, "Ian" and "Iain" are basically variants of the same name. (I should know because that's my name too!) If you go back far enough, they are derived from "John", which is derived from ... well you get the idea. It is the Scots Gaelic form of Ian, which in itself is the Anglicised version of Iain ... which mean 'John' :) See also Euan, Ewan, Eon, Johan, etc... If you have never heard of the name Iain you have obviously never read any Iain M Banks ... in which case, David, you've missed out some great sci fi :) He also published non-scifi stuff as Iain Banks. He is now sadly dead although I was lucky enough to meet him a couple of times. The M (as I found out, cause I asked him after he said 'don't ask what the M stands for' ;) ) is for Menzies, but he pronounced it 'Mingyiss' ... because that Z in Scots spelling stands for a letter (yogh) that no longer exists ...

Hey 8-Bit guy, just watched another video of yours about miniature arcade cabinets. I just wanted to let you know that there is indeed a smaller, more accurate version of these cabinets as sold by Super Impulse. The Ms. Pacman cabinet blew me away. It's small (about three to four inches tall) and fits in your hand. The game plays almost exactly like the cabinet itself. It has fruit, it changes level design (after the sets are cleared), colors and the sounds are crisp and clear. The screen itself is about 1x1 1/2. Great fun.

Coincidentally, several months ago a friend gave me a fully working Yamaha RX-7 (less features than RX-15) which I had a bit of a play with, & a Chinese-branded mid '90s electronic keyboard (with a few easily fixed faults) which would still be good for a beginner to confidently learn on! When I was young I spent the best part of a year having lessons to play the piano after my parents inherited an old upright from a relative, but it never stayed in tune & my hands were still quite small at that age, so I gave up. Eventually a different tuner took one look & informed us that the iron-frame was cracked, so it was really my playing skills to blame! Anyway, a few months ago someone local to me was selling on eBay a Yamaha MM6 61-Key Synthesizer keyboard about 10yrs old for a really great price (no other bidders due to local pick-up only) which I'm now learning to play, picking up where I left of all those years ago (although did learn to play acoustic-guitar for a while, I'm a bit rusty)!
@MrWombatty6 жыл бұрын
Love made in Japan; Thanks for correcting my misunderstanding on how the RX-7 compared with the other Yamaha machines! Certainly good to know, especially considering mine is in fully working order! Gorf on the Coleco was also in Ready Player One. The young version of Halliday was playing it in his bedroom at the end of the movie. I recognized the sound immediately because it was the first home video game I played (at my cousin's house, on a black and white TV; I think black and white TVs were often used for video games at the time after families upgraded to a color set and had a B&W relegated to a bedroom, basement, etc), not counting a pong clone my grandma owned (also on a basement B&W set).

I found something ironic when you mentioned the Vic-20 boards at the end. I know of the place of "Fair Radio Sales" very well. My late father used to work for the from the 1980s to 1994. I may have seen some of these boards as a kid when the store was located on Eureka St in Lima, OH. This can tell you how old some of these boards are. Talk about a trip down memory lane. :)

I would shit my pants with excitement if someone gave me any of that, and you are like... "gee, looks like a nice $300 desoldering tool, err, thanks..."

The stickers move when the glue gets old & soft. I had the same issue, sticked all in a row very dainty. After 3 years of use they looked like this 12:26

That desoldering iron makes desoldering into a breeze. But you should always make sure the tip and suction pipe is clear while it is still hot (using those steel cleaning wires). I learned the hard way that it is much harder to re-heat and clean out any solder once you have let it cool down.

12:16 I would guess that it isn't that they put the stickers on like that but as they used the keyboard the stickers moved. I've seen this happen on other devices that have a lot of use where the sticker is being touched a lot. The great sticker migration.

I had the Okimate 10 printer on my C64. To get a good printout you need a smooth thermal covered paper to print on. Using normal paper got you a printout like you showed in the video. I don't think I ever printed anything in color with it beyond what samples that came on the floppy.

Great video. It looks like Christmas for you! I had the smurf game for Atari 2600. It's pretty easy. I played it for HOURS. I can still hear the music in my head.

Huzzah, another unboxing *:D* (00:43) I'm told I use vague reference when I'm mentioning things from the 80s to coworkers who were born after the 80s, but those shirts are too vague, even for me. (07:06) Needless to say, Clint Basinger of *Lazy Game Reviews* has a couple of custom AdLib cards also. (09:16) Grue: look up Infocom interactive fiction games (or the Wikipedia page). (12:15) I bet the stickers were not _"randomly placed"._ I've had the same issue with Rosetta Stone keyboard language stickers, probably why they stopped issuing them: the glue gets nasty, and they eventually migrate with use.
