The word "off" in Japan is a synonym for discount. For example, their version of half-priced books is Book Off. So hard off isn't much of a stretch. Instead of naming it off, hard off would mean very discounted. I even saw a sign for a store named Jack Off. This would be like calling it Jack's discount store.

Just a tip, to remove stickers, soak them in regular pharmacy alcohol for a minute or two. The alcohol will disolve the adhesive and you'll be able to lift the sticker with no problems. You can even use contact cleaner or 70% alcohol to not damage the plastic. Also to adjust the potentiometer, you absolutely need a tester or you won't be able to read anything and you risk putting a too high/too low value which can burn out the laser.

@felixjohnson38744 ай бұрын
If there is one defining feature of western consumers its that they don't care until AFTER they make the purchase, THEN they complain. The idea that you don't have to buy something if you have an issue with it is genuinely something that got lost somewhere in the past few decades. People would rather just tweet #RightToRepair from their new iPhone 18 pro maxes, then just not buy that unrepairable device and buy a repairable device instead.

Hah, I went through that headache 20 years ago with my freshly modded PS1. Burn speeds, brands, software, which actual drive you are using to burn with etc.... I recently got out my old PS1 and it had an old game in it from back in the day... When I took it out it brought out some of the drive spindle pieces with it! I did a quick and nasty DIY fix with my oldest kid and got it working again but ran into the same problem with it being super fussy about what it would and wouldn't play. But you know what isn't? A soft modded PS3. That sucker plays everything I've thrown at it, discs I marked as bad burns, skipping cut scenes, skipping music (I'm looking at you Wip3out and Tekken 3) only downside is no beatmania... Until I work out Tonyhax on my PS2 that is!

You remind me of me, I definitely know the pain of trying to burn games to a disc now and whether or not if they'll work. Earlier this year I went and ordered an A/V cable for my Dreamcast - I had not used my DC since 2006 or so, and severely misplaced the original cable that I still can't find. Anyway, I started looking into used game prices, decided fuck that noise, and opted for burning game images to disc. Found some online resources for fairly better quality CD's than just Verbatim, ordered an entire stack, and then later found out each game's image is missing one or two minor things just to make the image small enough to fit on a CD-R, not only that but I then encountered games with multuple discs, like Shenmue, and one disc is too large still for CD-R's, so I had to try and find larger media CD-R's, tried burning that disc, and it STILL does not work. So, yeah, at some point I will probably mod my DC with GDemu or what ever it's called. I also got into burning PS1 games recently when I looked into jailbreaking my PS3.

I can personally vouch for the GC Loader! As someone who has ZERO soldering skills it's an easy mod and the recent updates to Swiss (Homebrew OS) have really made it the premium way to run games off solid state media for the GC. It's Also worth getting an 3D printed mounting bracket so that the SD card is easily accebiliy. Laser Bear sells them as a kit. Oh yeah and an SD2SP2 too, for additional storage.

The junk section In the car shops over there is my favouret spot. I have picked up so much stuff from there cheap as that needed super minor repairs.

I have a perfectly working gamecube but this video made me really interested in maybe modding it and doing the 3D printing so it can run full size DvDs thanks for this video!

Idk if it's available where you're at but there's a product called "Goo Gone" in america which is basically just orange oil. Works significantly better than wd40 for stickers, but can dissolve some plastics so you need to do a test swab somewhere.

Acetone polish works wonders on stickers i use that to remove sticky residues left from stickers.

To remove stickers I often use desinfecting liquid, alcohol or nail polish, or sometimes cooking oil

For stickers get a jug of Methyl Hydrate from your hardware or paint store, it melts the adhesive and drys with no residue.

The one faded memory card reader door on the right side can be cleaned back to the original colour, I did it to mine , What you do is go to a woman's hair dye supply store, Like Sally Beauty, they sell a bleach gel for hair. What you do is rub it on the door and place it in the sun for a few hours, then take it in, wash it off, dry it, then do it again, repeat this about 3-4 times, And the yellow colour will turn back to the original white.

A good cleaner is orange oil, you can get it from the cleaning isle of the supermarket. I like the Plant Ark brand, cuts through everything

You should also consider getting a replacement drive with a Xeno pre-installed off of eBay. Most of them come from China but I found one from here in the US. The ones that come with Swiss boot discs usually have the laser tuned just right to read burned games.

hey matt, i think youd enjoy checking out the phobgcc if you havent already. it’s an open source gamecube controller that uses hall effect sensors like the dreamcast controller to avoid the typical potentiometer degradation. i think youd make a great video about the project and the build process!

That is awesome luck! That value beats the GameCube I got for $25 which was still in the box with the cords/controller.

One solution I might have for the DvD size issue is to sand down (or circle/cone-cut) the disc's excess material until the disc can fit into the casing. Since the disc is basically just sectors and rings, it shouldn't impact the disc's contents too much.

the gc loader is excellent, i love mine but if you can find a mini dvd-r that works you could also burn swiss to it and use an sd2sp2 which are super cheap and plug into the serial port 2 on the bottom of the console. that is if your console has one, the easiest way to know is if it has a digital port on the back then it will have a serial port 2 on the bottom.

Vinyl off will easily remove stickers, vinyl or basically any adhesive.

You should make more gaming console restoration videos Matt. I agree with you, solving the puzzle that comes with each device is the most interesting aspect of the device itself. All the restoration videos now are just the generic hgih speed facebook watch video without narration where the guy just restores the plastic/metal and puts it back together. Your series is truly unique and hopefully the view counts reflect that!

6:57 Your answer lies at the top of that page, getting a pre burnt swiss disc and a SD2SP2 adapter will serve basically the same purpose as a GCloader but for cheap while also keeping the disc drive, it's what i've got goin and it works pretty flawlessly for 95% of games. Also those phillips discs should work, the Gamecube is very picky so you might have to tweak the pot to absolute perfection to get it to read, it took me about an hour to get it dialed in perfectly to read my non brand DVD-R's you could also try a laser from a different gamecube by just swapping the driveboard with the Xeno on it to another disc assembly

I own a gc loader and also bought the 3d printed attachment to fill in the inside of the gamecube it works perfectly

A better way to get stickers off is lighter fluid (for Zippo lighters) Though on painted surfaces test it on a hidden spot as it can damage the finish.
