Some of my favorite movies of all time - I watch all 8 of these and a whole bunch of other Universal B/W every October. They have long lost their power to terrify or scare us, but they're beautiful, poetic masterpieces.

I'm like so many others, in that I love the old monsters, and the old horror films in general. The sets, make-up, and atmosphere are exquisite.

I have most of the Universal monster movies, they're classics, it's where it all started.

She wasn't SCARY though she was goofy looking but I do appreciate the effort put into the film

I think you might've gone back 6 or 7 years before 1931 and included Lon Chaney's Hunchback of Notre Dame and his original Phantom of the Opera. The sets in the '43 version were those constructed for the '25 movie. And I agree that Bride of F. might've been included... one of the very few sequels better than the original. Otherwise, good job - I remember when they first made it to TV in the late '50s and early '60s. Great films!

Thanks for watching! It’s always tough when we only include 8! There will have to be another list… ;)

@@thereelthechannel I agree that you could have included Lon Chaney's original Hunchback of Notre Dame & Phantom of the Opera, as well as The Werewolf of London (1935) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). But otherwise, a good list.

Fyi: In the original Frankenstein, the scene where the little girl was thrown in the lake by the monster and drowned was so shocking to audiences it was deleted from the movie until I believe the 1970's when it was reinserted into the movie.

Very cool info! It’s amazing how sensibilities have changed! Thanks for watching.

By deleting that scene it made Franky a sinister character when he was ment to be a sympathetic character

These 90 year old films may be comedic by todays standards. I saw them as a young child in the early ‘50s. I was so terrified by Frankenstein I could not move. Dracula and the Mummy held their own terrors. I don’t laugh at these now because I still remember those early days. King Kong and The House of Wax on the big screen were also terrifying as a child. Being petrified by fear is no fun. Memorable, yes, but not fun.
@michaelhughes432 Жыл бұрын
@rascal175. I watched King Kong on TV as a teenager. When Kong made his first appearance on the small screen, he scared me. But later on when he got killed, I felt pity for him. I went to see The House of Wax (1953) when it was released in movie theater in 1973. It scared me so much that I was scared going home after seeing it!
@rascal0175 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelhughes432 Yes, Michael, real fear lingers. In war there is no time to fear. When I was a zookeeper and attacked by animals fear came after the event, if at all. But those films were designed to create terror. When it happens as a child it is unforgettable. Now those films are archaic and almost comical. They are historical and works of art. But the terror they created has lasted 70 years.

"The Phantom of the Opera" was a remake of the Lon Chaney silent film also from Universal, though I prefer the Claude Raines version. Previous to "The Wolfman" Universal produced "Werewolf of London." Also, the same technique of showing the change was used in that movie and a version of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." I own all of these movies and most of the sequels.
@thereelthechannel Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! There have been so many "Phantom" versions and remakes over the years, we wanted to choose one that felt different from the other films - colorful and opulent.
@randyacuna564310 ай бұрын
Have you noticed the responses , hardly any for the 1943 Phamtom, is is slow and boring, with very little horror. Way too much Opera, and some silly characters for comedy relef. Rains is good and the production with the Oscar winning technicolor is excellent, but a good actor cannot save a bad film. The 1925 version is the best with horror and great melodrama. Stick with that one.

DRACULA is my personal favorite. Bela Lugosi can't be topped. I understand why you chose FRANKENSTEIN as #1, however, BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN is actually the superior movie.

Very nicely done. I got the monster bug at an early age thanks to friends and FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND magazine. Everybody is going to say you left out a film. How about THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN? It proves that sometimes, sequels surpass the original. Still, I agree with all your choices.

The 1943 Phantom does not belong here. Despite having the best production values in the series, it is a flaccid piece of work. The silent version is a different story.
