Hannah Morgan, we are SO proud of you! You were a major trooper during that lesson-and to go through all of that with us, your fans, watching. Way to go! And, as a retired teacher, I was watching your face and became prouder and prouder of you with each lap around the building! Just keep it up and, before you know it, you’ll feel natural. It will all become second nature to you. Please keep us updated on your progress. And, (I say this as one who has trained many, many young people to drive) get your parents to explain the principle of a “pressure plate” and how that relates to getting the vehicle to go in motion! High fives!

When I teach on a manual, I spend 5 min just letting them feel the clutch and when it start grabbing. Then worry about the gas. Most modern vehicles will start advancing the idle when they feel a pull on the transmission.

Great video! When I taught my boys to drive stick, we found a nice level parking lot. They each had to get the vehicle to move using no gas at all. Teaches where the slip or sleeping point is on the clutch pedal. Helped them realize your not committed to letting the clutch the whole way up just because your pushing on the gas. Hannah did a wonderful job.

This is terrific advice, Steve B! I've taught busloads of teenagers to drive a straight shift, plus trained bus drivers (I was fortunate enough to drive for a charter bus company and even chauffered Ray Charles, Harlem Globetrotters, and bunches of musicians), and really enjoyed helping my fellow troops in the US Army learn to drive trucks (both small and large up to 10 ton trucks pulling low boy trailers). Since I learned to drive at age 6 in a hay field, driving with manual transmission just felt natural. But, your suggestion of starting on a level surface and letting the new driver get the feel of how the clutch interacts with the car is just STERLING! That, coupled with practicing where the various gears are located, will make for a much less stressful learning/practice session.

I also learned manual transmission on a tractor. It's a lot easier though without the stress of traffic. My first car was a 3 speed manual with the shifter on the column (3 on the tree). Later in life, I had to teach my wife to drive a manual transmission car. Teaching your spouse is more stressful because, well you know. It will be fun to watch Hannah when, after she has become very comfortable with this Jeep, to get into a different vehicle and notice how very different the clutch engagement can occur. Brings back memories of teaching my daughters. One hated it and eventually became proficient. My other daughter embraced it and recognized it was a necessary evil for using this car. The clutch survived all this learning activity. Maybe everyone has these stories. I also tried to teach them the new sounds and feelings you experience driving a manual. Had them stall it, wind out the clutch and the feel for it as Melissa mentioned. In the end, you are much more connected to the vehicle when driving a stick.

Hannah, you did great for first time. Some tips: Without starting the car, just push in clutch and go through the gear pattern several times. Learn the gentle touch. If you start the shifter in the right direction and push gently it will move on the correct path. They are designed that way. It is when you grip hard that you go from second to fifth. The natural spring tension will guide it to third if you do not over ride it. Same on all gears if you go in full order. After a few times you get the feel of it. Next: When you are starting from a dead stop you need to feather the clutch a little. Mom called it riding the clutch but when starting out that is good to do. So left foot off the clutch slowly until you feel it pull and then pause. at this point press gas slowly and once it starts rolling you can continue letting out the clutch. After some time you get the feel and this is only split seconds so it does not damage clutch. Basically in this video you are letting the clutch out TOO FAST. Part way until moving then the rest of the way out slowly. When rolling and going to other gears it is much easier and you need to get the clutch smooth but no pause needed. You will figure out the speed to release the petal with experience. Good luck and no worries. WE all killed it some while learning. And this is a skill worth having so worth the goofups.
