8-day Solo Adventure Ride in The Flinders Ranges - Part 3 (Arkaroola)

Part 3 of my 8-day solo trip through the Flinders. In this part I ride Glass Gorge Rd, and up to Arkaroola via Copley and a remote route. Then a beautiful ride around Arkaroola before heading back to Adelaide.

I have been visiting Arkaroola for 30 years and the hospitality has always been the same.... not that good. The reason for this is that most people don't want to work out there as it's so hot and dusty so the only people they can get are backpackers who don't know much about the place. Over the many years I have had Swiss, Canadians, Irish, Germans all check me in or serve me in the shop and it's a bit strange when you get to the middle of nowhere and there is a guy from Toronto giving you instructions...lol

Hey Mucho, you are right, the way I lifted the bike was terrible, but because of the mud I couldn't find any other way of lifting. I've been trained how to lift it properly (with my back to the bike etc.) but that wasn't an option as my feet would slide out. I'm sure I could have done it better... no doubt. As for riding with no gloves, I normally always ride with gloves EXCEPT when I'm flying the drone. I operate some buttons on the beacon that require me to feel them while I ride, so I put my gloves in my pocket just for the drone shots.

Having had the need to pick my Superdual up from a slippery, rutted puddle, I appreciated the difficulty. Be careful with your lift technique though, you could do yourself a serious injury. Hey Stuart, yeah you are right with the comment about my "lift technique"... it was pretty crap because of the mud, and the loaded bike. I normally lift quite differently, but because of the amount of mud, I couldn't use my normal technique. That's ultimately why I decided to unload the bike to reduce risk of injury. Thx.BP

Looking forward to the cinematographers episode. I’m glad you showed how good the 701 is on sealed runs. Why more people don’t get the 690/701 over a T7 is beyond me. 50 kg lighter and great standard suspension is a showstopper. Would have enjoyed seeing someone pick up a twin in that bog.

Hey Crumble, thanks for your note, glad you liked the vid. So normally I ride with some mates of mine, but they couldn't make this trip which is what made me do it solo. But I did enjoy the experience of adventuring solo and will do some more of it for sure. I haven't found myself out there questioning why I'm doing it alone. I tend to really enjoy the time alone and I actually enjoy the time to reflect and think about the next day's ride, or my route, or whatever. Do you ride with buddies as well? If not, I'd suggest joining one of the facebook adv groups and mixing it up.

loved this video, i took similar routes, the remote tracks but i did it in a modified hilux that can carry 245 litres of diesel. the tracks around Arkaroola are amazing, its a shame you didnt do the back echo track. Its a shame you couldnt get to do the mount gill track at waraweena its good, and the bush camps at Waraweena are good and far from anyone, and swiss wooden built drop toilets. I did a similar trip to you solo, the Flinders ranges are an amazing area especially the far northern points. I drove into Arkaroola via a series of back tracks via the mount serle route, and it took me five tries to find the right hand turn towards Arkaroola which ended up being a creek bed which was the track. Anyway love your videos and journeys, theres something really special about travelling remote alone, it is a powerful experience, I find it takes a couple of days to untangle from the city modern way of life, where all that is insignificant and you really tune in and become one with the environment and appreciate the simple things that nature has to offer.

Yes, I saw the back echo track, but I heard it was pretty technical... so I opted for the Paralana track, but I'd like to go back and do it with a riding buddy. Yes, I was really bummed I couldn't stay at Waraweena and ride Mt Gill.... but I'm already planning my next trip back :-)

I've really enjoyed this series through the Flinders Ranges Brent and I tend to agree with your comments on the 360Deg camera. Bit of a gimmick at this stage and in all fairness I think it would be the weakest link in the quality of your videos. Not required, just keep doing what you do. I'm also thinking of doing the flinders on my T7 later in the year. Might have to hit you up for some pointers if that is ok. Look forward to your follow up videos.

Such a great series. Well done. I would love to get my 690 down there one day. Solo must have been so magic out there. It's a great feeling when you're alone in the outback under the big sky. I think solo riding makes you a bit more focused on riding safely and taking a few extra precautions. You end up putting some extra measures in place beforehand, and I think that higher level of planning and awareness makes it extra special when you finish the journey. Group rides are also so great, to share memories together, but solo rides can be equally rewarding. Way to go Brent.

Man..... those well chosen opening shots hooked me straight away. That’s what I loved about Australia, those surreal highly saturated colours. Loved that water hole at 6:45. Yes I tend to agree with you what you said about the 360 camera. I got the gopro version to use in normal view as the eye see’s things rather than wide angle. Great for coming around corners into frame and not having to do the coming and going thing twice but. I don’t know what it is about Australian mud, there’s black mud in central Victoria with the same properties as the red mud which needs respect. A bloody good watch Brent. Fabulous, I grew up in the Flinders Ranges, been out around Arkaroola on a KLR650, a TT350 many moons ago, went up last yr on my DRZ400E, and now want to go back after watching your videos. It seems to be an expression of strength to say " a solo ride" like it's some extraordinary feat. We just called it a ride and a ride with mates if others come along. Different times I guess.

Hmmm… not sure. I ride Enduro bikes when I was younger. While I ride road bikes solo a lot, it is definitely much riskier riding solo off-road. My mate Nick crashed a few months back and he landed under his GS and couldn’t move. He was in a gully and out of sight. Luckily he was within range of his mate on Sena and could call for help. So there are definitely more risks riding solo off-road.

Great vids, I watched these several months ago, great to watch again and really understand what you’ve done. It’s interesting your comment about riding the bike long distance. I believe it comes down to how mentally prepared you are. I recently rode from Mackay to Inverell (KTM690R) in a day (1200km - 13hr). I stayed near the speed limit. I felt pretty good when I got to Inverell. Yes, I was a bit sore however nothing ridiculous considering the distance. I had to do that distance to meet up with a group who had left several days earlier than me. As I knew this was my plan to catch up, I was mentally prepared to do it. I broke the ride into sections and just rode each section, chipping away at it. Thanks again for your insights👍

You are spot on. I think a lot of it is mental and being prepared for a long trip. I assume you have your 690 set up for touring with some sort of windscreen or fairing, because I do think without that the wind buffering would be pretty fatiguing.

I went via Blinman back in 2018 when I crossed the Simpson desert. Back then I knew I had to go back an explore more. Hoping to head out that way in August. Brent I'd have to say this is your best video to date, I really look forward to seeing the bike and camera set-up videos, as I'm planning to purchase a new 701 this year I'm keen to find out what's best for adventure and road, things like lighting, chargers, GPS, mobile phone holder, baggage and racks, Giant loop dry bags, Oxford heated grips etc. There's nothing worse than getting poor advice and spending a lot of hard earned cash on equipment that doesn't quite suit your needs. What great scenery! It's a beautiful time of year for rides. My current ride has a cracked rear rim so I'm in the process of replacing rims and spokes etc then fit the new rubber ( Dunlop D606) and UHD Motoz tubes. which I already have. Hey WH, First of all, I came from a 1250GS, so I hear you on a twin vs a Single cylinder bike. But I will say that the bike doesn't really sound like it does on the video. I need to find a microphone that does a better job of capturing the sound of a thumper. But strangely enough, I've come to really enjoy the sound of the big single cylinder. Especially when you get "up it" and ride the bike hard. It kind of growls and feels and sounds amazing. Not as refined as a twin, but I'll take it :-)

Thx. I love the Carlsbad. I’ve had it just over 2 years and done many adventures in it. It has kept me dry, cool, warm and bruise free. Big fan. It’s a lot of $$$ but good gear is worth it. On our VIC High Country trip the heavens opened and I was the only one in our group that stayed warm and dry. Suit paid for itself right then.

The shorter ones work for me. Mirrors are a bit obscured but I have enough visibility. I like the neater profile of the 2” arms. I know others who don’t like smaller arms, so it’s very personal, but cost is minimal anyway.

Hi Thom Thx for your note. No, with my steering stabilizer I turned it up quite a bit on the highway and it made the bike super stable. No turbulence or wobbles from the Lynx windscreen... It was surprisingly smooth. My next ride is the Colorado BDR later this year and also another ride that I can't talk about yet (sworn to secrecy).

Hey Rob Yeah, I was bummed I couldn't get to Warraweena and ride Mt Gill. It was definitely on the plans. But I was liaising with Stony and he said that the road in gets closed with all the rain. So I missed it. Funnily enough I got to Arkaroola and I was still bummed about missing it, so I texted Stony and asked if I could camp the following night (I was going to ride back again from Arkaroola), Unfortunately Stony said there was more heavy rains coming in.... so I'll just have to go back to the Flinders and ride the tracks I couldn't do.

@@brentbat Stoney is a great bloke but a bit of a stickler for the rules Brent. If you can get a crew together try hiring his shearer’s quarters if you can. A basic setup, but it has everything you need and the location is outstanding. Re Mt Gill, I wouldn’t attempt it on anything bigger than you 701. It’s easy enough for the most part, but there are a few punches which had our arses puckering on our enduro bikes. I wouldn’t say we’re the best riders going around, but we go alright I think. Steep inclines with rocks everywhere. Worth the effort though, with views forever and wedgies flying past at eye level to see if they can eat one of us 😬 Great time and I hope to get back there again soon. All the best.

@@brentbat I haven’t done Skytrek Brent. My Gill is more of a trail ride really. Half day at most there and back. There are several other shorter rides in the park too. The Nuccalina mine ride to blinman then back to warraweena via parachilna and Beltana is more of an adventure bike ride. A good day if you factor in a few stops, lunch at the pub etc.

We did the Flinders ranges a few years ago on midsize adventure bikes and traveled all the way from Sydney. I love that you had the bike transported. Now I really want to go back and do the tracks we missed out on last time. I have learned so much and appreciate my riding more as a travel holiday, riding the bike but also enjoying the scenery, beautiful camp spots, some great food, wildlife and nature… Thank you for sharing the gpx files. Are you able to share which transport company you used? And also wHich are the organisations to contact prior to obtain access to some of the more remote roads where I spotted some locked gates. Hey Richard thanks for your note. The bike company I used was www.bikesonly.com.au/ They were great... they literally ONLY transport bikes. I would definitely recommend them and use them again. There are three private properties that have amazing riding. Usually the cost to ride a track is only about $20 so it is definitely worth it. Brilliant. Love it Brent. Thanks for taking the time - must be a big job! Between this and your other 701 videos I've been convinced and picked up a 701 E (2020) yesterday. I'll be setting it up pretty similar to yours for long range ADV. How did all your gear go over this trip? Anything you'd change/did anything fail on you?

Hey Tom, my bike and gear went absolutely perfectly. There is nothing I would change for a trip like this. The only thing I think I will do to the bike is put the 6L Rade tank under the seat so I have a bit more fuel capacity. I didn't need it for this trip, but for some others this would give a bit more peace of mind. But the bike was flawless. I love it. It is my Unicorn bike.

Hey Tony I'm very happy with my Lynx Fairing. I like that the fairing is more "low profile" than the traditional rally towers. I also like that my windshield totally retracts out of the way and that I have two different windshield options. The Lynx may not be as "sexy" as some of the other ones, but it's pretty flexible and the dash is very configurable. And compared to the other rally towers, the Lynx is very affordable. So I'm very happy with it.

Hi Mike, Yes, you could do ALL of this route with one exception. The last part of Skytrek is challenging, BUT there is a bailout track that takes you back to the homestead without doing the steep rocky climbs. But everything else (including Mt Samuel) I'd do on a big bike. With Mt Samuel it is moderately technical, but as long as you have some reasonable offroad skills I would do that. Everything else is easy peasy.

You get great results with the skydio, and makes your vids standout fo normal adventure riding. But I’ve heard a lot of people having trouble with the skydio, have you had much trouble with it?

No I haven’t had many problems, but there are definitely tricks that I use. Maybe I’ll do a Sjydio tutorial. 😀

Awesome stuff Brent! Thank you for putting the not inconsiderable time in to making these videos and sharing them with us. I agree on the solo riding front. If you are careful and good at risk analysis there is a lot to be said for solo touring. A Spot or an Inreach goes a long way to keeping those at home in the loop and suitably calmed.😉 I’m just wondering if you have any .gpx of your ride that you might be willing to share? I am leaving Adelaide Tuesday for a look at the Flinders on my Africa Twin. I’ve noted your route as best I can see but any tips on route selection would be welcomed. Cheers. Dave.

I have ridden both Mt Samuel & Skytrek, for the most part Skytrek is easy apart from the one section through the gates, but Mt Samuel is harder for longer but not as hard as Skytrek....

You’d be wise to practice lifting the bike with the correct technique, at home before you travel. Check out the BMW training video on lifting bikes correctly. Saved my back and bike on a few occasions! Leverage is you friend. 😊

Hey Ian I have been trained on proper lifting technique, but I just couldn't use it there... the mud was so slippery that if you put your feet out and tried to use the proper technique, the bike or my boots would slide.... It's one thing learning the technique in sand or dirt, but slippery mud is totally different.
