I have a wooden garland. I resisted for a long time, but then I realised my life would not be complete without one, and now I love it. It hangs over the side of the bookcase and covers up a nasty flaw in the wood. I also have a lot of fake plants, not least because I am so efficient at killing the real ones. Generally I have a lot of poor-taste decor in my home, but I like it. It’s cosy and gives a nice vibe.

Not sure why I watch these videos. We live in a quiant, but dated folk Victorian (actual) farmhouse where we still farm. Our decor items are almost all heirlooms or flea market finds, or memorabilia of some sort, like deer antlers from beloved hunts and throws our grandmothers crocheted. We have gradually updated the house whenever we could afford to add something needed, but there is still so much to do. That said, it is a very eclectic mix of function, nostalgia & a tight budget that is not perfect, but is home. Even still I enjoy your suggestions and simply listening to you speak. So thank you. 😊 You have such refined taste and a kind demeanor.

Another very helpful video! As an alternative to fresh plants, I'd like to suggest sprigs of eucalyptus in a vase: The leaves of some varietals add texture to the space, and they also smell very good; plus, they look the same dried as they did on the tree. So, it ticks off three boxes (plants, aroma, texture)!

Air purifiers are key to removing smells. I have a small air purifier in my walk-in closet and, although all my clothes are clean, the closet can get stale without the air purifier. I bought a Honeywell and they run about $100. It has two filters, the main one lasts 6 months and second, a thin charcoal filter, I change once a month but sometimes just vacuum it to get another month's use.

Agree completely, have three in my home. When a beam of sunlight comes through the window there no dust floating in it. The very 1st thing visitors do when they walk thru the door is breath in a very deep breath taking in what they feel (& have said) is a breath of fresh air. It makes a big difference & is highly recommended.

Can these be tucked into a corner, behind furniture, etc, or do they need to be out in the open to work? I've always liked the idea of getting one but my husband isn't keen on it.
@pjc7351Ай бұрын
@@Jodi9810 They need to be able to pull in air from the front of the unit and push it out on the top but you don't have to put it in the center of a room. Against a wall or in a corner is fine. Mine is only 18 inches tall and it is black, you can get them in white too and they have three settings for fan speed which allows you to control the sound. I turn mine up when I'm not in the room then on low when I am there. After you get used to it you don't hear it at all.

LOVED your sarcasm in this video!..and all points were so true... your string of beads comment was so funny 😂. Honestly, I also find them odd, even though I did end up making a small one from wooden beads and natural clay beads (I made) to hang off a basket on my first floor landing. I spray the beads with natural lavender oil or perfume as a room scent because I don't want a candle etc up there. So the little string of beads does "serve a purpose" and is not just decor.

Love your channel and often take your advice, so please don't be offended if I express my dislike for throw blankets and decorative pillows. I don't like any object in a home that only looks good if it isn't being used. As long as you don't actually sit on the sofa, these things look amazing! But when you sit down, they get bunched up, squashed, and sometimes even fall on the floor. Throw blankets and decorative pillows are for people who just want to look at their living room, but not actually sit on anything (I feel the same way about fringe on carpets...great as long as you don't walk on your floors). Great textiles I love! I have a wonderful Persian carpet (without fringe) and a beautiful Ikat from Indonesia on my wall. They ALWAYS look great, even when the room is in use.

Our circa 1950s ranch is what I'd call animal friendly casual eclectic. We have cool carefully collected art pieces and expensive but old furniture. No extra pieces or knick knacks. All our good stuff was collected before we adapted our kitties. But so much of the stuff said to make a house look expensive would be destroyed within a day by our furry family members so high end has to give way to pet safe 😅

Great video. I actually never heard about switching juice bottles into other containers but you know, I can see that being incredibly useful since the juice bottles are oddly shaped and are a pain to store in the refrigerator. Uniform shaped items are easier to organize.
@TheChaotix1422 күн бұрын
I could see those acrylic containers have use, they have a good shape and size to use in the fridge (unlike a lot of the jugs I've seen around). If you drink your water infused with some fruits, mint, cucumber, whatever else, might be nice to have a jug of that hanging around in the fridge, same if you make your lemonade from syrup (so you don't have to make it every time you grab a glass and it's nice and cool) or just want your tap water chilled for drinking.

Not that I claimed to be an expert of any sort, but I found that the most fundamental decor item in a house is to not have it freaking dirty. Clean your house.! I think that a clean house that’s been poorly decorated is much better looking than a well-designed and decorated house that’s filthy .

@Martha22cАй бұрын
For me, curtains add some softness to a room that is essential. I particularly like three layers - sheer curtains for ethereal softness & privacy during the day, heavy curtains for blocking out light in bedrooms and climate control, and behind them both roller blinds for an additional layer of climate control at night. I’ve probably saved thousands of dollars in my lifetime by having this system. PS I’ve always hated venetian blinds because of the amount of cleaning involved, and although plantation shutters have a relaxed effect, they cut out SO much light if you don’t have a very bright, sunny room (ie they are great for homes on the equator, what they were originally designed for, but very few other places!)

I've recently stumbled upon your videos and have enjoyed them quite a lot. I have been looking to high-effort redo a room in my place. I decided that the one that I would like to do the most is my bedroom. I am curious if you have opinions or recommendations on the use of platform or very low-profile/short beds/bedframes - let's say vertical heights less than 20" tall - mattress and frame. I find that I sleep best on firm bedding and prefer sleeping closer to the ground. My current bed/bedframe has a combined height of 15.5" and I would like to transition to a combined height of 9.5" in the future. As such, I am struggling to find many way to incorporate this into an overall room plan, especially since my bedroom architecture is very plain.
@Martha22cАй бұрын
FWIW your preferred sleeping situation made me think immediately of a minimalist Japanese “Zen” style bedroom. IKEA’s Mandal bed frame with storage drawers could be an option, or even their Tarva bed frame with legs cut down to floor level would make it closer to the ground (making sure dust can’t be trapped underneath that you can’t get your vacuum to). Tarva is also very budget conscious although if you’re not handy yourself, you might need to get a carpenter to cut down the legs to be sure they’re even - this shouldn’t cost much though.

Thanks for the laugh at the beads remark. I will always think of you as I enter my kitchen I replaced my door to the scullery with a blue sea glass beads curtain graduating bigger as it goes down and never thought of it until now. With regards to the acrylic cartons I have to agree for another reason and it's not about refiling it, Im from South Africa and over here we can purchase milk, juice and Even spring water in sachets which made buy one for milk the problem is after a couple of uses no matter what sterilization tecnic you use the smell doesn't go away or it damage the bottle so I have returned to my glass jug I had even thou it take up slightly more space in the fridge. I'm also heavy against faux marble or even wood (the one used for cabinets and wardrobes) and completely hate wood- look laminate flooring rather used reclaimed wood it looks so much better.

I've never understood those wood garlands either as they are very sterile and look more like you're staging a room rather than living in it. However, I have been known to use favorite necklaces as garlands as I am having contact dermatitis more often than not and don't want to give up my jewelry in case this improves. I also will take certain beads that inspire memories of the string and place them in decorative bowls, one in particular I purchased from craftspeople visiting our church from a third world country. The small wood bowl with intricate hand carving on the outside was all I could afford at the time and is a lovely piece that fits my room themes. But that is different because these are meaningful objects that tell parts of my personal story.

The reason I use a blanket ladder in our living room (a narrow custom sized "ladder" with tighter than typical spacing I made from antique turned spindles and reclaimed wood): CATS. We have a herd of cats, and they are all opportunistic soft spot nappers. No shawl or blanket is safe from a cat nap attack and resulting hair deposit when a tempting textile is draped over a chair or stored in a basket. So far, the cats haven't figured out how to sleep on the shawls and cold-toe throws draped over a ladder spindle ... climb, yes, sleep, no, so far. 😼

I hang them upside down in a wardrobe for 6-8 weeks. The colours change but are still rich and varied, and there is no wilting. Grasses are generally good for drying and some flowers are more suited than others. I've had success this year drying eryngium (sea holly), it's retained its lovely blue colour and provides structure in an arrangement.
