A car isn't just a way to from A to B. It's a serious responsibility and a potentially dangerous machine for you and others, especially if you have to drive in bad weather. Luckily, there are special driving tips to avoid accidents when it's pouring rain, the road is covered in ice, or you're driving in thick fog.
TIMESTAMPS:

Driving on black ice 1:43
What to do if your car starts skidding 2:42
Driving in heavy rain 3:48

SUMMARY:
- If you're driving in really thick fog, turn off the radio and keep your windows rolled down. This way, you'll be able to hear what's happening around you to partially make up for your limited visibility.
- Black ice is tricky given that, in most cases, you can't spot it until it's too late. When driving at night, your headlights can serve as a useful warning that there’s ice ahead since they’ll reflect off the road.
- A lot of people who drive a stick have been taught that, along with letting off the gas, you should also change the gear to neutral. Professionals, however, recommend against this.
- If you notice deep water ahead, just turn around. Driving through a large pool is too risky. You might damage the electronics of your car, get stuck, or even get swept away if the water’s moving.
- Raindrops on your windshield act as lenses that refract light. As a result, they can temporarily blind you, especially if it’s pouring rain and your whole windshield is covered in water. Try to adjust your headlights so that the light doesn't shine up.
- If the visibility is extremely low, slow down and turn on your hazard lights. Avoid using your brights since they can reflect light and blind you.
- If you’ve accidentally driven over a snow mound on the side of the road, do not turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction. Keep the same direction as before and, while steadily accelerating, get back on the road.
- As soon as a dust storm hits, pull over and entirely off the road. Also, make sure all your head- and taillights are off. If you don't turn off the lights, other drivers may believe that's where the road leads. They'll follow you and crash into your car. Do not resume driving until it's safe to continue your trip.

I was driving in some fog following some tips my friends gave me *Some of which somehow are in this video*. I started to pull over to the side so I can wait out the fog when all of a sudden the car behind me starts to speed up and it hits me a bit. There was a small dent but no major harm. Although there was one other car that got hit which was up two cars in front of me and the car did have a lot more dents *but still no major damage like the windshield shattering or a HUGE dent*. Anyways that was my WORST car experience by far.

Just after I passed my driving test, I was driving the 20 mile drive home from work at 1 in the morning when a sudden snow storm hit (it was forecast to be a clear night with no risk of snow). Within minutes visibility was poor and the snow on the roads was deep enough that I could hear the snow under the floor of the car and some snow was getting pushed up over the front of the car. There was a few times when I thought the car was going to bottom out due to the depth of the snow. Luckily due to it being 1am the roads were very quiet so I was able to take my time and not worry about getting in the way of other drivers. I was doing well, I now had half a mile before I was home but had a steep downhill road to negotiate. I started my descent, put the car into first gear (it was manual transmission), then let the car crawl down under it’s own power. I felt I was doing good, almost at the bottom, then all of a sudden another car appeared in front of me (looked like a large saloon car) who looked like they were making an attempt to accelerate up the hill as fast as they could but spun their car round and blocked the whole road in front of me. The other driver then made an attempt to get out their vehicle, I really didn’t want to touch my brakes and my only way to avoid them was to try and use the grass verge at the side of the road to go around them. My car reluctantly mounted the verge which was steeper than it looked, and just managed to make it’s way past the car obstructing the road, due to how steep the verge was I genuinely believed my car was going to roll over onto it’s roof but luckily I made it. I managed to get the car back onto the road without problems and continued my journey home. Luckily nobody got hurt other than my pride.

When driving in fog, an additional tip is to pay closer attention to your speedometer. The heavier the fog is, the harder it is to see objects around you, and it's harder to judge your speed. many people tend to gradually increase their speed if they are not paying attention because of this.

I would like to add about earthquakes even though it's not a weather condition, but a natural disaster. If you realize that an earthquake is occuring while you're driving, you should immediately pull over as other drivers will start to drive in panic and it will be dangerous to continue driving. If the earthquake is stronger so the buildings aside the road start collapsing, you should immediately go in the middle of the road in order to be as far as possible from the collapsing buildings, so you don't get hurt.

turning off your fog lights during heavy rain defeats the purpose of having them. plus rear fog lights are very bright compared to regular brake lights and are occasionally located in a different spot than the regular taillight and most people know this. turning on you car's brights when in heavy fog is meant to warn oncoming cars of your presence, turn them off once you see the oncoming car, then back on once it passed. for driving in very wet weather, try not to go near the brakes until the car is at walking speed, also don't down-shift to the lowest gear immediately when at speed, do it gradually otherwise you'll f-up the gearbox.

For your viewers & yourself driving with emergency lights or (Flashing hazard) in Florida is against the law as it is in most states at my last look up. Flashing hazard lights actually reduce visibility, making it difficult for other drivers to see your turn signal, brake lights or causing them to think you are stopped or stalled in the roadway. This also is one of my most hated driving peeves or annoying things people do.

1)Downshifting in a manual car and braking helps in slowing the car down and maintain optimal traction while driving in the snow and rain. It uses the car’s engine compression and, lowers center of gravity and makes for a smoother stop using less brakes=less wear and risk of engaging anti locks system 2) Manual transmission- when driving in snow or at a high rate of speed keep the car in a gear DO NOT! Put it in neutral when coming to a stop because doing so will disconnect the engine and transmission to each other making it easy to skid and lock up on the braking from a high speed or heavy snow. Keeping both mechanical machine parts together makes it easier to stay in control 3)Avoid driving a (RWD) rear wheel drive vehicle in the snow and rain to prevent skidding, hydroplaning and lose of any traction because the power is deliver to the rear making it easy for the back end of the car to fish tail 4)My personal trick for driving a (FWD) front wheel drive vehicle in the snow is turning traction control off and using a (Manual lever/type) emergency brake to help assist in making turns in heavy thick snow. Practice first in a empty parking lots and empty street ends to learn your vehicles response. You willing only be really doing 90 and 180 degree drifts to help out in jams

4:21 I wouldn't break either to be honest. I would just let the wheels spin until they touch ground again. Breaking could build a wave infront of your wheels, keeping your wheels above the ground. I was in a couple of scenarios, driving on the highway away Munich and hydroplaning happened nearly always. Just take your foot off the gas and don't do no more than holding your wheels straight until you stop sliding. At I slid there for 1-2 seconds at max. Most of the times even quicker. And pretty much everyone was driving around 80 km/h max.

NEVER press the brakes when hydroplaning! Press the brakes AFTER you have control of the car! When you release the accelerator the car will slow down pretty fast in the water anyway. However it will allow the water to enter the profile of the tire and will increase the traction. Pressing the brakes while hydroplaning will just make the car slide more and might even change the direction of the slide! Just grab the wheel with 2 hands, imitatively release the accelerator and try to stay on the road.

I've spent most of my career in the hauling industry. While I'm not a driver what I have learned from professional drivers is that the key to driving in snow and ice is to find a happy medium with your speed. You want to go fast enough to maintain traction but not so fast that the wheels start to dig in.

In the winter snow you can carry a bag of kitty litter in your trunk. It'll add weight which is good and if you get stuck in a snow bank you can pour it in front of your tires for traction.

@@arixari7174(first let me say .. thank you for commenting in my post to you), my post is just one voice, one opinion, my opinion. & I know I've put my opinion so very judgemental, probably because of my own past experience, so I guess I have to also say that (in all fairness), not all people are like that, so I apologize for such a harsh statement, I'm just this way because of what has happened to me before, so I just don't reply ... but I know there's more then just me that think this way, but I Should've been more fair, in my first post to you😇

Few things to comment on here. I have driven a Few Cars at different speeds, including a racecar on road tyres in slippy conditions as my goal is to be a racecar driver. Constantly braking and Accelerating in a straight line may be ok, but if you change the weight transfer too much, the car will slide. Dont force the Weight tansfer if you dont need to. For example, in the racecar i was driving, there was a fifth gear, flat out chicane. Now, i had two sessions in this car, and in the first I lifted through there to shift up, and instanlty realised it was a mistake, the car stepped out and Marginally avoided big barrier contact. The next session I shifted up before the corner, took it flat and had no issue every time. Also, Even ABS isnt as effective on Ice. The whole point of ABS is to stop the wheels locking. To do this, it releases brake pressure for a split second. Even this affects the weight tansfer. So, Dont Stomp on the brake in the icy conditions, Slowly apply presure, without Allowing the ABS To kick in. You will feel when the ABS does kick in. To prevent The ABS as much as Possible, brake in a straight line. It can apply on the road as well as on a track. BTW, my second session was much better. I am 13 so if you dont beleive me that is up to you, but you need to know all of this if you are controlling a car at 90mph

Instead of turning your lights off, it might be a good idea to pull over and turn your emergency flashers on .
@MoniekRedhead
@MoniekRedhead 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. If they're off, no one sees you. Put on your emergency lights! And definitely do NOT STAY IN YOUR CAR!!! We are taught to get out of your car and safely wait behind the rails. What if another car crashes yours and you're in it? Best to stay safe behind the rails. Another thing I don't agree with, when your car starts to under- or oversteer DO NOT keep your wheels straight but put them into the slide!

The worst think you can do when hydroplaning (aquaplaning) is to apply brakes. You should put your foot off the accelerator and shift to neutral and wait until you get grip.

With a front wheel drive car if the back is skidding and you let off the throttle to much it can cause the car to spin all the way around because it slows the front but not the back end.

Do not tailgate especially tractor-trailer trucks!!! They cannot see you. there is about 10 feet behind him that they cannot see which is the only true blind spot on a tractor trailer truck. If you drive bumper to bumper with a semi, you’re putting yourself in extreme danger because they truly cannot see you when you were that close. please for your own safety BACK UP!
