While not as dramatic, I can definitely attest to the truthfulness of the "don't stray from the path" moral with a personal story. Went to a haunted house attraction with some friends in a town about 45 minutes away from ours, one year. On the way home, one of said friends suggested a shortcut that he'd found on his phone's GPS that would supposedly get us home faster. I was the one driving and said "why not." We ended up getting lost for hours driving in circles around the middle of nowhere, between towns we had no knowledge of. We stopped at a house to ask for directions and the guy sent us in the wrong direction on purpose. (admittedly, it was late and maybe he was annoyed, but we felt bad about it even before we decided to try it. We just wanted to get home and we were desperate.) After a while driving around we finally risked trying again; stopped at a nice-looking house and asked the lady there (with many apologies for being at her door in the middle of the night,) for help. Thankfully she was a much kinder soul than the previous person and helped us find the right directions to go. Friend with GPS STILL tried to convince me to take another shortcut on the way home and I swear I could have killed him with my eyes, the way I looked at him. We ended up making it home safely, but I'll never forget what a horrible and scary experience it was, worrying if we'd run out of gas before we made it back (we hadn't been past any stations, either,) and be stranded in the middle of who knows where...or worse.

The "urinating on the tree in Midsommar" is totally false, because you see later that the villagers have remove the tree (certainly to build that strange altar that burn at the end), proving that the tree wasn't sacred at all. The whole point of that charade was to convince the main girl that her "friends" were disrespectful of their traditions and deserved to die. That's also why they explain in high details to the black guy they have a book with all of their traditions written inside kept in their temple, to make him try to steal it and have a reason to kill him too. I never understood the way people saw that movie. Pretty much every critic and review I've saw about the movie present it as a feminist story, about the heroine obtaining in this new community the freedom and respect she never had in her old life, and her revenge about an infidel and unconcerned boyfriend. But I saw this movie from start to finish as a warning about sects and religion. The community (starting with her boyfriend's friend, the one who invite them all to Midsommar) prey on the main girl because they know about her tragic loss and her feeble state of mind, kind of like some sects searching around trash cans to find news of people having lost loved ones in real life. They present their way of life starting only with the best and more attracting parts (kind community, traditional farming, DRUGS !). They follow with the less pleasant parts while trying extremely hard to explain how they're not as bad as they seems (the 2 old persons jumping of a rock), they split the main girl from the group by making her companions doing various sins (the famous tree, the book in the temple, they drug her boyfriend to make him cheat on her), and when the couple try to leave (they did nothing to break any rules of the village), they're simply tortured and killed out of sight. They make Dani win at the dance festival to convince her she will be happier in their community, and then end her conversion when they make her choose to sacrifice her old boyfriend at the ritual, because let's be honest, after all the drugs she took, and the fact they made her do this choice like 1 hour after she saw Christian cheat on her, she was not going to spare him.

Dom twisted his knee, and because he's a city slicker that hates doing any bit of physical activity, they knew he was gonna bitch and whine about how much farther they had to go. Hutch only suggested the woods, Dom had the final say and demanded they do it so he could get off his knee faster. I kinda put my money on it being Dom's fault. He was the one who got injured from simply *walking* and demanded they take the shortcut, and he really WAS a complainer the whole time.

Also y'all left something out in number six. What really, ultimately doomed Christine was not making sure she broke the curse right. Because had she actually done what she was supposed to do, she would've survived.

In Saw 3, Amanda makes traps that are impossible to escape - leading to her death. Our later acolyte makes some traps that are also impossible to escape leading to his ultimate death. If you think about it, only the Doctor made the “sacrifice” to escape, so it makes a kind of sense. Just as Jigsaw chooses to free the guy who made a human error with his x-rays in a later signal, so he spares him. It’s part of why the last Saw is rather brilliant. If the protagonists, no matter how horrid they areD had worked together they would have escaped. They wouldn’t have avoided pain, but ultimately their sacrifices would have been minimal. most demonstrated by the electric bath trial and the last where they have to “give” blood. The key problem with the Saw franchise is simple, if you took all the key threads you could make an awesome trilogy. Starting and ending with the doctor. It’s just a shame they dragged it out so king with such stupid ejejebtsZ A personal favourite being that if the cop had listened to Jigsaw and waited he would have found his son safe and well in the back safe, just as Jigsaw promised, The simple fact that he can say where the son is at that point, without seeing the screen tells you those events have already happened. It’s a brilliant final twist,

Re: the Midsommar example, I think it's important to try to preserve the distinction between arrogance and intelligence. Many people of low intelligence are kind and empathetic and humble. Many highly intelligent people behave in monstrously short sighted ways because of arrogance or egotism.

Honestly, what's far worse than a protagonist making dumb ass decisions that get them killed is the protagonist making the absolute best possible decisions that make even the viewers proud and in awe, and even those amazing decisions not being NEARLY enough, and the death of the protagonist being absolute inevitable. The horror of hopelessness of the inevitable can be the most dread inducing feeling in a horror movie.

Sgt. Howie not going for it with Willow the landlord's daughter in The Wicker Man. One could argue his decision to go to Summerisle doomed him, but he was a police officer investigating the disappearance of a child, so that wasn't really HIS decision. But had he let Willow dance around his maypole, he would've lost his virginity and wouldn't have been used for the sacrifice.

Lee’s decision to leave the batteries lead to his own death, not saving his children. His careless actions lead to one of his children’s death and, in the moment he couldn’t do anything to save him. He had the ability to do it this time so he made the choice. (And yes, in a world where noise is death, leaving batteries for children to get to is like leaving a loaded gun out and expecting kids to act responsibility)

@RealHajimeHinata2 жыл бұрын
The Death Angels (Quiet Place monsters) would trash the Midsommar cult. They have no way to stop them nor have they faced anything like them. Jason would be very interesting. He’s usually silent but his footsteps are loud as hell I’d imagine and the one and only thing he mumbles is, “ki ki ki ma ma ma.” Once they hear that, he’s done for. He might be able to tear through them but they’re way too fast and he’ll never touch them if they don’t want him to.

Although not in your list: Captain Rhodes in Day of the Dead. He's mean, vicious, and quite correct that the team should have abandoned the project, taken the helicopter and left the mine. But, as John warned, he probably won't shoot Dr. Logan because"the old doc can talk him(Rhoads) silly". And Dr, Logan talks Rhodes from leaving by actually scaring him more than Rhodes could scare the team. So they stayed at the facility, and the poor Capt got to have that rubber chicken that was irritating his tummy removed!
