There are many reasons to explore fingerstyle technique on the guitar. Fingerstyle is a useful skill to have when accompanying another player (like writing moving melodies over someone else’s open chords), or during a solo acoustic guitar performance. To get you started, we’ll be going over 8 important fingerpicking patterns everyone should know.
In this lesson, you’ll learn essential techniques like rolling and alternating bass patterns. You’ll recognize these in many other patterns you’ll learn in the future, so it’s important to nail them down early.
Don’t feel like you need to memorize all of the patterns we go over here. Grab a few that you think you’ll use, and add them to your daily practice routine. As you master those patterns, feel free to come back to this lesson and add a couple more to your repertoire.

Many, many years ago my guitar teacher taught me Dust in the Wind. It's the only pattern I know, but I can play it perfectly even if I haven't done it for a decade. Once it's in your brain it's there forever.
@susanmarshall817
@susanmarshall817 3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. you nail it the first time, and it's forever in your brain when you learn a song. My grandfather was a championship piano player, meeting he was the best in the London County in Connecticut. He started as a child. Everyone here needs to understand something, that you are all starting as first learners. Nothing wrong about this. Just take your time with it and relax. One day it will all come together perfectly. Nobody gets everything in one night. Switch back and forth with what your learning so you don't get bored.

Totally agree. And you feel confident. "I can play anything!". And then KZbin algorithm pops a Merle Travis performance in the suggestions section. Your haughty fingers move the cursor and click. "Let's see how this old fella compares to ME!" Two minutes in your right hand is in fetal position.

@leimaniax
@leimaniax 2 жыл бұрын
@@crusader2603 Totally with you! Getting the Barre chords sounding clean on Travis picking is intense at best. Things that made a big difference: 1) Lighter strings are easier to fret, so makes for cleaner notes. 2) Get your guitar set professionally (if it isn’t already..) and that’ll make it easier to barre, especially when you take your chords further up the neck. 3) this may not suit you, but: Tune down a half step, and then put a Capo on fret 1. Sounds pointless but with the lower tension on the strings, it makes for easier bends and fretting. Right - that’s every pro-tip I know. :) Hope it helps.

First time I picked up the guitar (feb 2020) I decided to learn a basic finger picking song. Today (Jan 2021) was the first time I used more than my index finger for it. Through out today I've been relearning the few finger picking songs I know and applying a real picking pattern to them. After the first hurdle they already sound so much better, I wish I'd been playing like this for the last 11 months as I could have been so much better today.

Great sounding picking patterns for folky style chord progressions, so thanks! Maybe you could expand upon this as my interest is in learning some appropriate finger style patterns for playing 12-bar blues in A and E. So far, I’ve learned one triplet pattern, but that’s all. Any suggestions for some simple patterns to learn that work nicely for rural blues?

Hi Ron, When I think about blues fingerstyle patterns I automatically think travis picking. To start this you really need to work on getting your alternating constant bass with the thumb down. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind as we move forward.

You're approach and method to teaching is incredible. You don't come off as condescending at all. That is MUCH appreciated. I actually typed in "How many fingerstyle patterns are there?" I like the idea of learning the one, "cover-all" style, which probably doesn't exist. I'm a very lazy guitarist. I practice every day, playing just scales, the A scale. Learning fingerstyle seems like quite an investment in time. Again, I do appreciate your video.
