I live in Vancouver. I recommend renting a car to get to places. The north shore (cities of West Vancouver and North Vancouver) has great hiking trails and beaches and parking is abundant and free there. Though there are a few places in which a modest parking fee is charged. Van Dusen botanical gardens is beautiful. It's not free but it's a nonprofit so the admission is not expensive. The garden is in the geographical center of the city of Vancouver. Just 1 bus ride away from downtown. If you have a car, abundant free parking at the parking lot. Plus free street parking. There will be a lot of places inconvenient to go to if you do not have a car. the north shore is just across the bridge from the city of Vancouver. but expect traffic jams on the #1 highway (trans-Canada highway) in the summer time. Also I think gas town is kind of overrated. If you like historical streets, there are prettier ones in Boston, Europe,...etc
@jeanallan81063 жыл бұрын
One of my favourite free things is to take the bus to the Cleveland Dam near the base of Grouse Mountain and follow the trail down the Capilano River all the way to Ambleside Park. You’ll also pass the fish hatchery where they have glass walls against the fish ladders and you’ll see tons of salmon.

Georgia Strait is a weekly entertainment newspaper, not a monthly. It started back in the 1960's as an underground, hippie paper, similar to the Berkeley Barb. The owner, Dan Macleod, saw the writing on the wall and gradually increased (real estate) advertising, while keeping a left of centre (Savage Love) viewpoint with excellent reporting and has so far stayed successful.

Tip: Canada Line from downtown to King Edward Station (King Edward = 25th) 10-12min. From there it’s a nice walk a few blocks south then you’re in the park and easy to cut through up to the top without much trouble. If with elderly &/or disabilities then transfer onto Tranlink bus at the CANADA Line station, or hail a cab ;short ride or you can find/book an awaiting available carshare be nearby (ie. popular carshares: EVO , Car2GO or Zipcar, etc). Seriously,if you’re able bodied, it’s not that far to walk.

Vancouvercis a great outdoor town, and there is no shortage of beautyborcthings to do. The views from QE Park are epic. I also like Jericho Beach, as itvis beautiful and less crowded. Kits Beach is the people-watching capital. Stanley Park isxaxtreasure, andcone could spend an entire day there. Just riding the Sky Train is a good way to get the lay of the land. Just walking some of the older heritage neighborhoods is nice, since so much residential is high rise condos now,

The Georgia Straight is a free WEEKLY entertainment paper. Bob Geldof was a music journalist for The Georgia Straight in the 1970s previous to his return to Ireland where he formed the Boomtown Rats. Bob Geldof is also known for BandAid's Do They Know It's Christmas and the massive world LiveAid concert. Note: If you're looking for movie listings, the Georgia Straight unfortunately no longer lists movies. The best place is the internet for this.

Another thing that should have been on that list, was visit Yaletown and the Engine 374 pavilion (where I volunteer) at the roundhouse, Yaletown has alot of shops, parks and history and the locomotive is a great Its a nice piece of history (showcasing the first locomotive to pull a scheduled transcontinental passenger train into Vancouver). Thank you for your reply. But I really tried to cheer myself up by visiting places here in the lower mainland that might give some satisfaction. I drove to Squamish and Whistler three weeks ago . I visited the Shannon Falls and I took the Gandola ride up to the Mountains . It only cheered me up a bit. When I'm in Chicago and New York. The way I look at it it's different. That was thirty years that the last time I was there. I don't know why I'm feeling so bored and anxious here in Vancouver.

1- Watch out if you walk one block East of Gastown you will regret big time because one block away from Gastwon is Vancouver East Side Hastings Street (one place you don't want to see if you are a tourist). Consider yourself warned ;) 2- Watch out for your photo gear if you go to Stanley Park after 9pm (someone just got killed there during taking pictures late evening). 3. If you in Downtown be prepared to be asked for a spare change outside almost every convince store. Outside of every liqueur store homless people living 24 hour so you might see somone urinating in front of you (that's why it smells urine in most public areas in the Downtown area). 3- Please watch your belongings, if you in a coffee shop don't leave your backpack, cellphone or laptop on a table most possibly it will get stolen. 4- Remember all liqueur stores close at 11pm you will not find a place to buy liqueur anywhere else in the city (bars and nightclubs alcohol cut of time 1am). 5- Enjoy this beautiful city, it's truly beautiful!

@TheNewTravel7 жыл бұрын
Hey Judith, great question. If you're going to be staying around downtown I would definitely recommend public transport. The skytrain system is convenient and the central area is very walkable. If you want to visit some of the nature outside the city, a car might be a good idea.

Good question CyborGod! Right now I live in Vancouver so it's a bit easier. I have time to plan out videos and shoot the locations. But I'm spent a lot of time travelling while creating content, and it can be difficult to manage. Since I usually travel solo, that allows me time to set up the shots I want and to take time off to edit footage. But it's important also to not be working all the time, and enjoy the places you are in :)

This time of year Granville street usually has cool street performers playing downtown. If you are going to mention Gastown as a place for tourists to visit you should warn them about the aggressive drug addict pan handlers and the steam clock is really electric. Real tourist trap.
@TheNewTravel7 жыл бұрын
I live near there, and yes, as you say there are drug addicts and there are pan handlers. The pan handlers are mostly in the area because there are a high concentration of tourists, so there are more people to ask for money. From my experience it's like that in pretty much every major city in the world. The addiction in the downtown eastside of Vancouver is clear to anyone who has walked through Gastown / Chinatown. It's not something I would ever try to hide - in fact I point out drug needles on the ground in another video of mine called "The New Guide to Gastown". But I don't think there's any need to mention it in a video about free things in Vancouver, or to give a warning... our panhandlers are a lot less aggressive than the ones I met at the Eiffel Tower, let's put it that way :)
