Omg Patricia, when you mentioned the older generation ignoring problems struck such a chord. My parents are like that and the decisions they made in life led them to live with me and my husband currently and i’m still on their case to pay off their debt. I work in finance and lead a very financially safe life due to my childhood so i would always recommend to everyone to first pay off your bills, put money aside and only then spend on other things, your older self will thank you for it.

My issue is really wanting to buy makeup, haircare, and clothes. Right now I'm centered on makeup. I really want a burnt orange lipstick and blush. I was so close to buying the Sephora's Hot Flush blush. I really want the Smashbox Out Loud lipstick. BUT I have orange eye shadow and plenty of nude lipsticks (I wish I had spent money on different colored lipsticks instead of buying almost the same exact color multiple times lol), so I know I can make do with using the orange shadow as blush and placing it over the nude lipsticks with the brown Nyx lipgloss I already own. I don't NEED these products but I really WANT them. My mom is good at not over-spending money and paying bills, and she always says I get this trait from my father. NOPE, I want to be like her in this way. I'm only 19, so there's still time to mature financially.

Well think of it this way, when you’re 21 would you want to be able to have money for your own apartment or do you wanna look real cute still sitting at your mom’s house???? 🧐 A lipstick here and a blush there really add up over time, and the years go by hella fast once you are accountable for all your own bills. Use this time of not having lots of bills to practice saving, even if your first goal is as small as saving $25/week.

I’m honestly very obsessed with saving, paying bills ahead of time, tracking my credit score and not spending...but alas, I’m also not perfect. One thing i really need to stop doing us spending on experiences and the like. I’m very much a “try it once, and then you know”...so even pre-covid, if i happened to walk by a bakery that looked good, I’d buy a bunch of sweets to “try them.” Nothing wrong with trying but i need boundaries and not to try everything (if I’m in a location i know i can’t visit as often, I’ll buy one of almost everything cause i know i won’t want to miss out cause i can’t come as much)...also, I’m terrible with food. Again, cause i like to the things, I’ll buy a bunch of new items at the grocery store, and if i don’t like it, i just won’t finish it and/or sometimes i buy too much groceries and they just end up going bad, so i toss it. Ughhh, so much money wasted.

Gosh you probably won’t see this but I just wanted to share the part about budgeting and hitting goals because that’s 100% true. I recently just saved my first $10K and paid off $16K in stupid credit card debt I accumulated in my early 20s because I got on a steady / strict budget. I still got another $16K to go but honestly budgeting is the GOAT. Thank you for all the advice I used to feel like such a failure but after you started the break I’ve been feeling so empowered. Now I need to invest lol

The keeping up with others is true for me with the iPhone. Literally everyone around me and in my city seems to use an iphone, I feel like androids are non-existent.

Very useful advices!!! I am doing the 'put the item in the basket and wait 24 hours before you buy' more and more often... sometimes leaving it for a week as well and when I go back I actually end up buying maybe just one or two items, instead of 20 😅

This truth is painful to hear and is so real. I advise folk to do budgeting on paper and to see those sums of money (on paper) and to choose social media stuff carefully.

Honestly COVID made me realize how much money I can really save. So far I’ve done a little shopping because I like to shop but I’ve made a list of stuff that I want so I can budget it for the month. Since I’ve started this my credit score has increased and I’ve saved my rent money up all the way till March 2021. My goal is to save up to July 2021 and I can truly see me reaching that goal because I’ve limited eating out and other luxuries I don’t need. I also pay with my credit card but I pay it out at the end of the month I just like to build my credit and get cashback lol.
