Last winter I bought an electric 2-stage snowblower. My old 5 horse gas was pretty worn and I just got tired of nursing it along. The electric has battery duration limitations, but I have learned how to economize on battery usage. In my application the electric snowblower is a perfect fit. And it is very quiet. That’s sure a big plus for those 5:00 AM jobs.

My husband would love any one of those mowers! Also, the instant speed from the electric ones is impressive.

With battery equipment, I wonder if we need to rethink the "bigger is better" philosophy that seems to have become common in farm equipment manufacturing. We can add cover crops from autonomous drones now. How many years until we have self-propelled, automated seed drills running on battery power? Would they have to be as big as what everyone's running today? Maybe a system where you let two or three work together in a field and they send an alert and location when they need more seed.

I agree with your thought process.....but here's the driving factor. PEOPLE WANT IT TO BE CHEAP AND EASY!! Food in this country has to be CHEAP!! Imagine planting 3000 acres with a 6ft planter...it's not gonna happen my friend. So..it's not a trend towared "bigger is better" it's a trend toward reduced manpower, efficiency and effectiveness. If we're gonna feed a nation a bunch of soy/corn garbage and call it cheap food....subsidized by the gov't...then we gotta have large machines to get the job done. I grow enough microgreens here for my consumption on the farm, costs me $100 per year to do it on my own...without a tractor. It's about efficiency my friend...the factory farm industrialized food industry in this country. Folks spend $200 on a fancy bottle of bourbon, $150 on dinner out with the family....but complain when grass fed beef costs 1/3 more.....and go buy preservative filled fried potato chips!
@karlrovey Жыл бұрын
@StoneyRidgeFarmer I should re-phrase that. As far as battery and automated technology goes, is that balance of efficiency, cost, etc. going to be smaller but faster units or multiple units working together, or is it still going to be larger units? I don't see batteries powering combines or tillage equipment, but I could see them powering automated versions of smaller seed drills such as the no-till drill that showed up in your videos about 5 years ago.

I love my 2011 Toro Timecutter SS4235 because it had no pedals (I'm physically disabled). I bought it at a Homedepot end of season sale and got a fantastic deal with 0% financing. It still looks great, and I've had zero issues with it--even though I've taken it places only a bushhog should go and even got it stuck in some wet, boggy areas on my property in the early years on the stock tires. I put some herringbone tractor tires on it (spacers required) and I pretty much never got stuck again. That said, I would put it up for sale tomorrow if I could get an EV zero turn--especially if it was Toro. Anyone notice, that all the residential EV zero turns are painted in ugly colours? I look forward to seeing Toro's take on an EV replacement for my current mower. They would be wise to have a quick charging port instead of having to remove heavy batteries to put on a separate charger.

I've been asking toro to get one of those toro Revolutions to my place! The revolution has an onboard battery...the other version has removable batteries that fit all the rest of Toro's equipment! If you get a chance...attend the equip expo this OCT 15-18th in Louisville KY. I'll be speaking at the Toro booth!

I honestly can't tell which is worse for the environment. Gas or Electric. Charging takes Fuel. Mining the raw materials is scary. Recycling the batteries seems iffy. Battery life is suspect. I want to like electric, but my battery tools perform well out of the box and then slowly decline. So much so that I had to go back to a gas weed eater after 3 electric weed eaters over the past 8 years. Same with my 80V leaf blowers. I just use my blowers to blow off 1 driveway a couple of times per week. I can't imagine a commercial application.

Average cost to mow a yard in a subdivision is $100....mow 20 in a day...I think you can see the ROI...mow a 10 commercial properties at $300 each in a day....pays for itself in less than a month my friend...then no more fuel stops, oil changes ect
