I also have a 1990 Buick Reatta . I live a few miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I've driven mine on several road trips. The longest trip was from S,C, to Mississippi. I stopped driving it much, to cut down on the miles I was putting on it ! Last year I messed up, big time, I took it to local garage because a brake caliper was not releasing due to sitting up so much. The guy replaced the wrong caliper, then told me the one giving me problems was due to a bad brake line. He replaced the brake line and I told him we were going to test drive it to make sure the old caliper, that was the reason I took it to the shop in the first place still hadn't been replaced. We drove it, and it didn't ride well. Normally if rides as good as my Lincoln ! The mechanic told me I needed tires, because the ones on the Reatta had dry rotted from not being driven. I told him , ok, no problem... he had a tire machine and he sold tires....I left my Reatta at his shop, I knew the guy well and I trusted him to get it done, even if it meant me paying for his mistakes. I hadn't planned on a sciatic nerve sending me to the emergency room, and having to take rehab for the next 6 months. I stayed with my older brother at the beach to be near the doctors and the hospital. 7 months later , I go home, go to get my Reatta, and the guy still didn't have my tires on, and my Reatta was in field of broken down vehicles ! I held it together, but told the guy, I was going to get my own tires. I ordered new tires, the mechanic put them on, and I brought my Reatta home, It was, and still is, a mess, because someone had left the passenger door open and rain had gotten inside my car! The results were ---water standing in the passenger floor board, mold on the carpet , the electric motors for the seat were shorted out, causing additional electrical issues. The ignition key would not release and the ignition would not turn completely off, All that cleared up today, on it's own, after months of drying out . The trunk still will not open, but I released I could open the hatch located in the rear of the car. I'm upset, but not as much as I was when I brought my Reatta home. My motor and transmission are perfect. The other things I can work on, and I love my car, so it only makes sense, I love working on it . I look forward to my next road trip !

Being a resident of MB i could have told you to never TRUST any mechanic around this area with a car like that. MB has way to many incompetent so called mechanics that will destroy your car well before it gets the repairs it needs. If you're looking for a shop that is atleast trust worthy, bring your car to the family run establishment Averill Auto off Seaboard street in downtown MB. They have been in business for over 20 years and all the locals know they are to be trusted. They are a Napa Car Care center as well to give you piece of mind while travelling. Hope it helps.

This happens more than you think. The stupid kids have NO IDEA what kind of car they are looking at and they end up sending it to the junkyard to be destroyed. That's why you have to do atleast what you did, and try to talk to the owner BEFORE they die.

@@kaidrinksbleach Congrats!! It’s been a bit since I looked it up, but some things I remember were that the later years they took away all the fun quirks that made it special, like the crt touch screen and the buttons below it. They also changed the digital gauges I believe and added an air bag, taking away the sleek steering wheel. Surprisingly there’s a ton of content out there for it so I’m sure you’ll be able to find anything you’re looking for there or in a forum. I’m not an owner of one myself but I’d love to be someday. I hope you enjoy the car once you get it!

@@StickyMaros Yeah the 1988 and 1989 steering wheels pre airbag were so much nicer. The airbag steering wheels look fat and huge and don't fit the car when it was originally designed. The CRT was a kewl feature and as you mentioned they did away with that as well. Sadly if you want the convertible model you have to take a 1990 or 1991.
@StickyMaros
@StickyMaros 23 күн бұрын
@@klwthe3rd my thoughts exactly! The original steering wheel suited the car so well, and the crt really made it unique. If I remember correctly a lot of the controls in the center got changed to be more normal and less interesting. I feel like they took away what really made the reatta interesting in the later years. The convertible is cool in its own right for those that want it, but imo it also changed the silhouette of the car. But hey, at least it still had pop up headlights lol.
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 23 күн бұрын
@@StickyMaros They said that the customers didn't like those unique features so they changed it back to normal switches and buttons. They let the marketing department run the show with these customer focus groups when the car was selling relatively well. I do personally prefer the convertibles over the coupes but i love the 1988-1989 interiors better.

@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 23 күн бұрын
i highly recommend you buy one of these cars. It's one of the very very very few convertibles with the venable GM 3800 motor. These engines last so long and require so little maintence so the car is a very low cost vehicle to run. When these Reattas were built they were assembled by hand on a special assembly line. The quality of construction was very high and nothing else looks like them on the road. Cosmetic parts are getting super rare so buy the best one you can get your hands on because restoring one is extremely expensive.

They were just being discontinued when the supercharged 3800 was introduced in 1991 on the Buick Park Avenue Ultra. I'm not sure if the hood would close if that supercharger was installed hence why it wasn't made available on the last year of it's production.

@@klwthe3rd Yes, I'm aware of that fact, I'm just saying that it would have been cool if they had existed at the same time, I guess if the 3800SC was produced sooner. A hood bulge could have been cool.

@@justinkase1360 True. I love the 3800 SC too btw. They don't seem to have nearly as many issues as turbo charged models of other engines do. Great motor.

@@klwthe3rd I think it was a great motor. Imagine if they came out with a similar motor today, how much power it might have. Like you, I think superchargers make more sense on normal cars because they are more reliable, but turbo is fine on higher end sports cars. I have a soft spot for the 3800 SC because my uncle left an impression when he let me drive his 90s Riviera back in the day. I thought it was like a spaceship. I'm in the market for a Tesla Model S Plaid now, I hope to have that same feeling as an adult.

@@justinkase1360 Just like you, my family owned a 1993 Buick Regal Gran Sport and i always thought the 3800SC should have been an option. That car was amazing without the supercharger. If ANY Buick car should of had that engine, it should have been the Gran Sport in the 1990's. I'm on the hunt for a Buick Park Avenue Ultra with that 3800 SC motor. Wish me luck!
