The YC88 has its own sound, which I would describe as close miked, almost too close for listening to on headphones or without a bit more reverb. But I can imagine that listening to it in a live PA environment, mixed in with the natural reverb of the room, it would sound even better. I would want to imaging a YC88, where I can add lots of reverb to one set of outputs, for monitoring and then send another relatively dry signal with very little reverb, to the front of house PA. But even as I think of it, maybe the solution would be to send a relatively dry audio to the mixer, and add more reverb from the mixer to the monitoring mix, of the piano player, to give him/her a bit of the ambience/comfort. I was very comforted to hear the Live CF3 Tone, which avoids that extremely direct strident - in your ear against the strings approach of some of the other sample sets, to provide an alternative tone that is percussive on the higher velocities, but nicely rounded on the lower velocities. Yamaha must be congratulated on making a fine keyboard instrument, that I definitely want to own one day. I have a cherished Yamaha CP33 which still meets most of my needs, for the audiences and repertoire to whom I play - which is predominantly me, myself and I, so no hurry to acquire a YC88. Pianos like many things in life are a matter of taste, but definitely with the YC88, and the CP88 Yamaha is thankfully back as the king of the piano hill, producing instruments that represent the highest quality of sonics available in a relatively portable (if still heavy) self contained instrument. Nothing is ever perfect, but I think this instrument covers about 60% of everything I would need in a stage piano, and the only other thing to do would be to complement it with a portable computer based rig, that allows me to expand what I can achieve on stage, and bring any well tweaked studio sounds from my home studio, to the stage. For the serious pianist, this is about the best all-in-one instrument, and if you need other piano tones like a Steinway, etc, trigger them on your portable computer based rig, from this master keyboard. Good job Yamaha, and an interesting demo. The one thing you cannot accuse this piano of, is a lack of ability to cut through the mix. These highly percussive piano sounds, are as bright as anyone will ever need - definitely Yamaha, yet weighty with strong fundamental tone, and I can imagine that with EQ, and tasteful use of reverb, these will be adaptable to so many genres, and will never get lost in any mix. I do wish it would be possible to include the pop-oriented sounds of the Motif, and the Montage, with this instrument, as an add-in-module.!! We are never satisfied.

Interesting that the S700 is just 3 velocity layers and yet sounds so good, from the S90ES to YC88, it sounds real good.

if you have an S90ES you better buy a new DM board now because they have stopped making them and if it fails and fail it will you will be SOL

Nice video and great playing, thanks. Just note that what you have labelled Nashville C7 is actually Nashville C3 and what you have labelled Live C7 is actually Live CF3. Purely for piano the CP88 is better because it also features the CF3 (completely different to the Live CF3) and the Bosendorfer Imperial sounds.

Thanks for the correction… I also like the access to the fx better in the cp. I have the CP73… the YC is an all-arounder with better synth sounds than the cp…

Sir. Can I add 3 pedals to YC88? If not then can I assign una corda(soft pedal)?

My biggest challenge with these keyboards is getting a piano sound to my liking, most don’t seem that great,i just ordered this keyboard,I just hope I can get a real good piano sound.

The sounds are what they are. I find that they sound better in context than they do solo. You also have quite a few controls to edit the individual sounds to your liking. Thanks for the comment

Pete' The instrument records very well, & nice job... Did you use a "1073" on the Unison channels of your Apollo? If not that might be a great contribution to A/B the 2nd order harmonics by using different PRE'S from the UAD collection. I am convinced YAMAHA really got the Psycho/Physio sound/action/resistance connection almost as perfect as it can get and have really developed that body/arm/finger/sound connection with this board... Thanks for the comment. I’ll try that altho I actually have a real pair of 1073s. On this video tho, I believe I took the sound out directly over usb into pro tools using an aggregate device with the Apollo. Thanks again.

Great vid man! Amazing playing too :) question regarding the pianos, what do you recon cp88 or yc88, I own the cp88 and find the high end of the pianos quieter than the lower section? Is this a problem for you? Also some people say the cp88 and yc88 have different version of the pianos? I thought they have the same pianos and Rhodes engine( samples) !!??? Best matt
