Hi Jenna, ...a little fun by the way: the thing with the hot water heater. You say, many Germans make the container only partly full; you're right - it makes more sense to make the kettle completely full and boil up. What is then left over can be conveniently put in the fridge - hot water is always needed at short notice! (LOL)

Hi Jenna, with the tape on the backside, hmm, it can be tricky if the sides are not reversible, because the adhessive side is _facing away_ from thew wall when measured, and _to the wall_ when attached to it. I use a somewhat different trick: i steal the ballpen "inner pen", which is small enough to go through any drill hole, and simply write a mark through the hole on the wall. (will be drilled away anyway).

Nice trick with the shelf. I will try it next time! I've never seen anyone boil more water than they need. That is new to me! I also don't like the giant square pillows here. So I ended up buying UK sized pillows. But pillow cases are harder to find. At first I bought German pillow cases and would just fold them (not so nicely like you did), but when my mum visited, she cut and sewed 2 of them into 3 pillow cases. 😃 Now I just buy them from India when I visit. I tuck each corner of the fitted sheet at a time, starting from the most difficult side. But when the sheet is smaller, then instead of going corner by corner, I do opposite corners. That's why I like to buy ones that are for a mattress height more than my mattress so that it's easier to put. The excess just gets tucked in nicely.

I'm using the Zollstock when I want to measure wider spaces, e.g. from one wall to the other, or measure along the ceiling. You unfold it completely, and if you are careful and the joints are not too worn out, you can hold it at its end and push it against the wall with the other end, so it is like a solid 2m rod.

To anyone it might concern. A bed that is covered and made is a cesspool for mites. A bed that is open and devoid of anything is a much healthier option. Hang the sheets somewhere to completely dry out. Any humidity left in the bed from night's sleep together with what we shed is food and environment for them, so make it as uncomfortable as possible for them and not cozy, because of some outdated sense of order...

Why would someone fill the kettle all the way, to make just one or two cups? It takes much longer until the water is boiling that way. But the trick with the sticky tape is really good. But measuring corners with a Zollstock like that I have never seen before. Whats that good for? And also it doesn't really work, unless the hinge happens to be in the right place. And even then the measure is crooked. But a Zollstock can have advantages: because its rigid and not floppy like a tape. For example to measure from a spot that you cannot reach to. Also, Zollstöcke are a pretty old invention, dating back before there were tape measures.
@reinhard8053
@reinhard8053 Жыл бұрын
If it is just a few cups you just use the cup as a measurement with maybe one extra and you are exactly done. If you need more water later you won't gain much by having the kettle full the first time. You need to use the right sticky tape ! If it is streched you won't be happy.

The word you were searching for was Dübel, translation would be wall anchor. In addition: In German the word Dübel can define two things (getting a little bit technical here and I am not accounting for medical uses): 1. A wall anchor in general construction work, to fixate things on walls or ceilings without searching for wall studs or trusses. There are even wall anchors specifically for stone walls, concrete walls or concrete ceilings (concrete screws are not very common in German construction, they are there, though) 2. A dowel for everything regarding wood work. I think that doesn't need any more explanation...

As you have already mentioned in one of your other videos, how we Germans react on your mistakes while speaking German, I felt it right now! I found it funny and 'cute', how you say Dübeln (meaning dowels). Well, it's not like Nachricht (singular) und Nachrichten (plural), but like news (singular and plural, or better say no singular). It is 'der Dübel' (singular) and 'die Dübel' (plural) - no trailing 'n' or 'en' as you may have learned from other words. But for the task of putting these dowels into the wall, we actually have the verb 'dübeln'. And to make it even more difficult to learn for english speakers, we have the genitive form of 'des Dübels' which looks like it would be the plural with trailing 's', but isn't. Edit: And if you have more than one Dübel the article 'der' has to be used in the example and not 'die' as you might think.

The thing with the shelfs and the tape is a bit complicated... why not allign the shelf to the wall and use the holes to directly print the marks on the wall with a pencil? And for the rest, i think all germans know these things especially open beer bottles. You can use litterally everything to open them. Even Newspaper. 😉 Nice Video.

When I saw the "Zollstock" I immediately missed the hack to open a beer. :D :D This is very German, but only, because we drink mostly beer out of bottles (in case not tapped, and the use of cans is very little). Being honest is indeed one thing I really appreciate too. It nails it to the point and it saves a lot of time with negotiations. In Germany you can say "... and exactly that is wrong" without offending the other person. The other may react "And your fault is that ..." and it is OK too. Indeed in the German Bundestag the debates sometimes become really offending, but also funny too. And several delegates of different parties are good friends. Germans have a kind of black humour too, not as much as the Austrian people, but everyone understands when it is a joke. These jokes are made with "known people", e.g. colleagues, neighbors, etc.. People you know that spark on that wave length. I would say, Germans are funny people, of course they are serioous too, but making jokes to deal with the daily madness is pretty common. And now I combine first and second paragraph, beer and humour. A German band once had the slogan "Dosenbier macht schlau". Germans don't really like cans, and too much alcohol is of course no solution, but making jokes about it is always allowed. The band became little popular, only for the humour. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmGkhIOcr99lg6M

"Zollstock" is a very common used word in Germany, but it is not the "right" name. This correct name is "Holzgliedermaßstab". More or less "Wood links measure rod" ;)

Hey, your tape "hack" is really nice, but can be a bit tricky with things like picture frame hangers etc - for that case there was a product that debuted on the German version of "Shark Tank" a few years back called "Drillstamp". The tape-hack got me... I facepalmed myself why I never did that - I also kinda measured.. or put the object in an angle so I can see the holes and just use a "Bleistift" to draw a line upwards from the holes and then simply use the "Wasserwage" to get a nice crosscut drawn where I can drill the holes (which obviously leaves space for mistakes if youre not able to draw a straight line) xD Good thing I saw this video since I wanted to put some "Regale" in my kitchen soon - this may help if I choose some with such holes :D The last one got me.. If I ever visited Canada and someone would give me answers like that I'd prolly stand there, scratching my head, askin: "Is that a yes or a no??" xD

To be honest you cannot sit in front of that Werbeschilder without showing the whole wall. One hand holds Zollstock and bottle neck, both parallel, zollstock's metal part under the cap, hit the Zollstock firmly from below with the flat of your free hand. Result: loud "plopp" and the cap flies away. No beer fountain wanted and no bottle drop, too. And down the hatch! Well, you forgot to mention how many liters to use on that Wasserwaage? Tsch__au

Great Video and i want to give you another real Lifehack here : BLOWING BOILED EGGS! After this you will never spend time to peel you eggs anymore. 1. Just ditch your boild egg on both sides. 2. Peel of just a tiny little bit on the tipy point of the egg and a bit more on the belly side off the egg. 3. Take your egg now between your second finger and your thumb like inside here👌 and blow in to the pointy side of the egg in you little hole ( keep your other hand below)😅 cause the hole egg will fall immediately out of its shell into your hand! For little kids it's always fun and like a magic trick. The rest off the eggshell stays even intact. Try it out and you'll love it 🎉
