The reason why the TV is the focal piece in a living room is because no one wants to crane their neck when it’s time to relax on the couch and watch TV. When one has guests over they can use the television to play music or to display photos and art.

I’ve never walked into someone home that was centered around a tv and noticed the tv. A tv to me is just another wall. When I’m in my living room it’s to watch tv. I work in my office, I eat in my dining room, I sleep in my bedroom, I cook in my kitchen, I watch tv in my living room. When we have people over it’s usually around the dining table. I just don’t think having a tv or surrounding your space around the things that are used is going to die.

I just jump in a chair, I have a pillow. I put my elbow on it, and a cat comes and joins me. Is that the same as chopping it? I must say I disagree on the linen. That style is truly timeless and do look chic even with some wrinkles. It will always work. Here in Sweden I would say velvet curtains started to go out of style in last part of 2021. Everyone was trying to sell theirs. What is nice to see is that more fun patterns and prints are coming back in style. Mixed styles also is finally here.

Oh man, Linen is completely classic and timeless and only needs upkeep if you’re uptight. Its actually extremely chic to have lightly wrinkled linen… if you don’t understand this … I’ve been using hemp fabric in place of Linen as it softens nicely and is more affordable.

I agree with all these EXCEPT you can see dust and debris on dark wood/materials waaaay easier than on light wood/materials. A layer of white dust on my black furniture is so much easier to spot than on my white and beige furniture and that's a fact.

Completely agree with you! Especially when it comes to flooring!!! I had ebony floors and they showed every piece of dust, dirt, smudges etc. we changed to a very light natural wood color and you can never see dirt now!!!! even with vehicles this is true! Black Cars show dirt and debris like no body’s business! When I’ve had medium / lighter colored vehicles it shows a lot less dust!

@@clarejenkins2422 the problem with “hiding the dust” is that it doesn’t magically make the dust go away… you still have dusty furniture, only now you can’t see it. For people who have allergies, lung issues, or environmental sensitivities in general, it’s better to see the dust so they know when to clean.

I disagree about matching your decor to your house style. Sometimes the juxtaposition looks really cool to do it that way. I think the thing to avoid is to make things look to costume-like. If you like industrial, you don't want it to look like an actual factory. If you want a beachy theme, don't lay a bunch of lobster traps around the house. If you want a French theme, you might not just throw a picture of the Eiffel Tower on the wall.

Yup. I lived in Europe and cool funky kitchens in 400 year old homes rocked. I think not over designing with a theme is more the problem.

I have an aversion to “theme” decorating, and most people who “juxtaposition“ opposing styles between architecture of the home and the decor end up with a garage sale look. Or fake. But it can be tricky in this world when the actual exterior of the home is kind of fake. Or if you live in an ancient structure and you don’t want to live like someone Who lived in those eras. I do love harmony as well as loving my own preferences. My home exterior says Texas contemporary colonial limestone on the front and the back says Elevated farmhouse with siding, and the interior is all contemporary with an unexpected courtyard and little bit of traditional pastiche.… But not everywhere. So I am embracing this contemporary Life Forms home, among the last by this innovative builder before they closed down. blatantly suburban. Obvious signs of being built in 2001. (surfaces reflect the limited palette available at the time of building, as do light fixtures). So I’m just embracing that. And doing it better. I managed to avoid everything “Italianate“ which is a blessing. I don’t love my tile, but I don’t hate it either because it smacks of fake Italy. it’s neutral enough to flex. Contemporary upholstered furniture with antiques and transitional pieces. Plants and a neutral, fairly high contrast palette. A few dark brown walls to tie together the tones in the tile and the cabinetry. Plenty of soft white: Simple curtains. Berber area rug. Leather chairs. Glossy piano. Kitchen counters. they reflect plenty of light back into the rooms. Different wood tones, mostly low grain. I don’t know what I would call my style, it’s more about the feeling I get when I see the cream, the dark brown, The rich cognac, like an ice cream sundae with chocolate and caramel on top of vanilla ice cream. It’s hot here so its ok that there is a slight tropical/traditional feeling, what people might call British colonial but without all the layers of stuff. But then go down the hall and there’s modern stuff in the office, and yet the color helps at all flow. Light maple and cream furniture create the effect with the walls, and it hits the spot. I resisted this color scheme for the longest time because I thought it was too...I don’t know, too “ Z Gallery.” but it really isn’t, because it has the stuff we love to use in it, and I love looking at the colors more and more every day. I need to repaint the upstairs next, and I will probably try to make it sort of cohesive but not use dark brown very much. It costs a lot to paint these days, so I’m taking my time and really thinking it out (like I did with the dark brown and other light neutrals downstairs).

I disagree about the TV. I find it uncomfortable to have to keep turning my head sideways or sitting awkwardly so I can see the TV that isn't centered in the room. I understand that we want to connect with each other in our spaces as well, but these kind of layouts can be physically uncomfortable for everyday life

You're missing a significant point, which is that now with the advancements of swivel mounts, why would you arrange your stationary furniture around your TV, when you can adjust your TV to face your furniture whenever you plan to watch it?

as a Scandinavian I can say -we don't always have light wood, we mix wood tones, and I think medium tones are most popular in general, I used to use very light with very dark , now I love light to medium tones

Brown is the color of wood, dirt, and some stone. I don’t see how anything that references nature can be out of style. I love muted earth tones. The room you showed with the brown sofa? The sofa isn’t the problem - the problem is that truly creepy art above it. I do completely agree about matching interior design with the area and the style of the home. Our house is in the woods/mountains, so it’s a little rustic (hence the warm browns!). Finally, I also agree about TV-centric living rooms. We put our TV on the wall over an antique bar and then hung up curtains over it made from cool Argentine fabric I brought back from travels, so if we aren’t watching TV, we can just slide the curtains closed.

Okay, I have an opinion on the chopped pillows! I’ve noticed that when I chop my pillows, my guests tend to not to fully lean back and relax in the pillows and on the couch. I think they don’t wanna mess it up, even though I don’t care and WANT them to relax. Maybe it’s not as inviting because you can clearly see that the person put work into it. Would love to hear anyone else’s thoughts!!!

I have dark gray sofas with neutral colors and pops of emerald and it is so cozy. My walls are taupe and my place is not sterile looking at all. I would prefer a beige sectional to lighten up the room since we live in a small condo. Any suggestions?

Me too! I am so glad I'm not in the market for a home because all the houses coming up for sale are just 800 shades of gray. It feels sterile, cold, and uninviting and if I had to buy one I'd feel the need to change it right away. That's not to say I hate gray. I have charcoal, slate, and deep gray countertops. I love gray - I just don't want EVERYTHING gray.

No pillow chop! I'm so relieved it's going out. It's too obvious, too styled. Am I allowed to lean against it, do I have to carefully place it somewhere so I don't disturb the chop, is it art? Pillows should be poofy and comfortable. I completely diagree about the look inside having to match where you live, but then I have this thing about making rooms into theater sets. I think your rooms should be yours, and if you love the beach but you live in Brooklyn, you should have a beachy home. It'll make you happier, and your home should always do that.

My realtor warned me not to get dark toned wood floors here in Arizona because we have dust getting in the house all the time as well as regular dust storms, and it shows up really easily on dark floors. That's why my floors are blond wood even though that wouldn't have been my preference.

I've never done the pillow chop, seems ridiculous to me. I do the upright on chair, laid back pillow on couches. Btw the bulbs don't arrive dead, they ship them uncharged to make their life span as long as possible

lol literally did not know the pillow chop was a big enough deal to make it onto a trend list. I've never thought much about it before but I think I'm anti-chop? I know the TV is not "supposed" to be the focal point but I want most seating facing the TV to watch without turning my head or eyes for hours. also will be living by myself so that obviously makes a big difference in my priorities lol

'Karate chop' in pillows, here in Germany is out since the 70th 🙂 . I fully agree with you, that the interior style should match the living environment. I do live in an old house in a very small village, so Industrial, Costal or Midcentury style wouldn't make sense. But I don't like farmhouse, so I found my own style, which is not inspired by any trends, but timeless. I love your content, because the view to overseas opens my mind, and it's very interesting to see, how many cultural differences there are.

I love the pillow advice because that is what I've always done. I just hate the big stiff pillows that sometimes come with some couches, and I always give them away. I like soft squishy pillows. I lucked onto the idea of putting a smaller insert into the pillow cover by accident awhile back when I grabbed a pillow cover out of the stack that was too big. I instantly loved it! Chopped pillows just look silly to me.

My style is eclectic and one of my favourite things is when something I really like goes out of fashion. That means I can get it used or even for free. BTW I hardly ever chopped my pillows, though I did when I staged our house for sale. I love puck lights in cupboards but we have vintage floor lamp that needs to be rewired, so I am getting one of those battery operated light bulbs, thank you for the tip.

I somehow completely missed the brown memo in 2022. Two years ago, I ditched a brown reclining sofa (I know) in favor of a pair of denim love seats. They are like jeans for my living room. Comfy and easy to style in every season.

So, when I was in design school we took a color theory class. In that class we learned about how color effects how we feel about a space. Not just emotionally, but physically. Cool colors make things feel slower and further away. Warm colors make things feel faster and closer. I think where people go wrong with dark spaces is leaving the ceiling white. That makes the ceiling feel really low because it is generally a warmer color than the walls.

White ceiling makes the room look higher. Painting the ceiling lighter than the walls makes the room look bigger. Wearing black also makes you look thinner than wearing white.

I built a country french cottage. I live in the country and i am french. All other homes in this rural area are original farm houses, over 100 years old. We built a French country semi cottage in Texas. I really don’t like the Texan look, which is heavy with dark woods and a ranch feel. We modified the exterior but it still fits in with the neighborhood, yet has a European touch. The interior is light and airy. When neighbors visit, I’m sure they are a little surprised but we do get compliments on our styling and it’s our dream home and I love it

I just discovered you, and I love you. Everything you said yes! *Except for linen curtains no: Sure choose a fabric that's easier if your eye can't tell the difference but I sure can. And to be clear; they aren't just pretty. Just like cotton or any other fabric it can be woven or quilted to be insulating to keep a place warm at night or cool in the day, and make sure people can't see in at night. They can also be woven as transparent to allow cooling filtered day light. As for the wrinkles, - If someone out there has had this experience or not, please chime in - Just hung linen or any natural fabric from animal protein like silk, without ironing it first, then yes, like clothes, they are going to be wrinkly. But even if you didn't iron them, as time goes by, the weight of the fabric hanging there, combined with steady open airflow (as opposed to folded or heaped in a pile somewhere), naturally dewrinkles the natural fabrics and they stay dewrinkled as long as they are hanging. So if the only reason someone says they don't like linen is how much work they are; I am not understanding. Rather I am guessing those curtains haven't been hanging there for a long time at all? Beyond an initial iron they should be effortless. But sure, otherwise, if you like plastic go for it. Some people used to keep the plastic on their sofas to protect the upholstery no matter how uncomfortable it was. Now we make fabrics out of plastic. But they will never feel, look, move, or fall like natural fabrics.

I own an authentic Mario Bellini for B&B Italia Camaleonda, and it is sublimely comfortable! I’d wanted one for years prior to finally pulling the trigger just because I love how versatile and customizable it is with the hooks and the endless configurations. I promised myself I’d love and keep it even when it inevitably fell out of favor again. And I do agree that time has come - it’s overdone and derivative at this point, so naturally it’s become trendy to beat up on this sofa. But the #1 reason I see repeated ad nauseam is “it doesn’t look comfortable” and this just isn’t the case. I think people are confusing the lower end dupes for the real deal, because the B&B Italia Bellini is soft, luxurious and utterly exquisite. I’ve had guests sleep on this couch and they always remark on it being one of the most comfortable sofas they’ve ever encountered. I myself take long naps on it every week. So, I feel inclined to defend the (authentic) Bellini in this regard! I also can’t help but feel sad that dupes and an overabundance of knockoffs have corrupted design classics like the Bellini and Ettore Sottsass’s Ultrafragola mirror. The Memphis movement is fascinating and very niche, and the Ultrafragola is a piece of functional art that was never intended for mass market use. 99% of what you’re seeing on IG consists of cheap replicas. You can’t lump these in with the authentic pieces, and I wish more people would call for the end of badly made, hastily assembled, fast furniture knockoffs, vs coming for the original pieces which at this point are icons of design and IMO timeless. If you’re buying an authentic Bellini, you’re most likely buying it for life. So instead of canceling specific designs, let’s cancel wasteful trend cycles and imitation/fast furniture with zero regard for quality or sustainability.

My mom, born in 1938, always decorated with natural items, natural light, potted plants, wooden bowls, etc. And also loved items. To me decor trends can come and go, but as long as you incorporate natural items, and you have your chosen items displayed neatly, and it’s not overwhelming, then you can have any style, any palette that you want. But I do agree-as would my mother-the living room should not be focused on the tv. My mom always called it the ‘boobtube’. She watched tv sometimes but she preferred reading or socializing, or being outside. Love your videos! I appreciate you keeping it real and your wonderful expertise.

I live in north Florida where the majority of homes are generic suburbans built in the 80s. My home has traditional millwork but I hate traditional design. I don’t have the income to change all that so… I’ll be working in my bohemian modern aesthetic bc I just can’t with the builder grade traditional millwork in my townhome. I get what kb is saying though. I wouldn’t make my home beachy when I live far from the beach but I don’t think so many first home owners should be locked into Traditional/Country style bc builders lack creativity either.

I have sensory processing disorder and that trend turned out to be a life changing discovery for me. So I might not be cool anymore, I am just gonna a be a puck light lady for life 😂

I am watching this in my dark brown leather reclining sofa, with light brown IKEA living room furniture. Plus the nearby dining furniture and some other pieces are brown woods. Hahaha I didn’t realize how much brown I really have! I have a lot of other colors in the space so it doesn’t feel dreary to me. Love the Earthiness with pops of color. But overall I agree with your predictions!

Thanks for your tips! I could never understand the rationale behind the chopping of the pillows thing. It looks so unnatural. I always just left mine the way you're describing for 2023. Too much light wood IMO also looks bland, and over doing too much brown is depressing - for me that is. Bottom line, we each need to go with whatever makes us happy, regardless of trends or what anyone else thinks. 👌👍

My 'design style' is pretty granny. LOL..My 2 small dogs are my design team. They barf on stuff, or leave muddy footprints. That's why all upholstered surfaces are covered in those cheap but lovely velvet blankets. I;ve got quite a stack of them. My couch is a dif color every week! my pillows look just like in the photo...slouched down from the lil fluffies walking on them.They track in just enough leaves n branches to give the place a nice woodsy feel to blend with the exterior environment. Yes, pine cones for the holidays, too. We've got it mastered!

I have a Mario Bellini sofa and it’s ridiculously comfy! I’ve slept there multiple times even. But of course to each their own! I totally agree that it got overdone, and I’ve seen multiple people selling some on marketplace, probably for that reason. For me it was never about the trend though, I loved it years back (it was my dream sofa) and I refused to let that dissuade me from getting it when I purchased my place in 2021

Preach! I agree it’s overdone at this point (especially some of the more unconvincing replicas) however we own an authentic B&B Italia Camaleonda and it is one of the most comfortable sofas I’ve ever sat on. It’s exquisite and soft and perfect for long naps. I think a lot of people are confusing the lower end dupes for the real deal when they claim these pieces aren’t comfortable.

I've never done that chopping pillow thing. 😳 I've been watching everyone doing it on KZbin for years but I never did that because our cushions are flat but they are the most comfortable pillows. I love taking my afternoon nap on my couch. Also, I don't understand with so many pillows on the couch.. where do people sit? Hardly any space left for someone to sit comfortably with 10 cushions on a small couch.

This has been a real lesson - we moved out of a condo I’d done mostly industrial and modern - a lot of it got sold or traded when we moved into a brick traditional. Not all, but it just looked contrived and out of scale in a more traditional house, so we kept the “favorite” pieces and blended with some softer styles. Working well! Other styles can certainly be done, with care and consideration for the proportion of the setting. 😊

That's funny I was trying to look at simple pillow configurations for beds on pinterest yesterday and I felt the pillow chop looked dated compared to the ones that looked effortlessly (even if it took effort) placed. Now you're saying this, so that is interesting. That said, I've always liked a more relaxed look. Glam is the polar opposite of my personal style - so the chopped pillow isn't for my own home even if it was still "on trend".

I have gray laminate floors which I hate but I can't afford changing it out . I bought area rugs with tones of cream, beige and a bit of gray trying to warm it. Hello and thank you for this list of interesting tips on trends and designs, I especially liked the final comment that not everything must be perfect. I'm writing from Poland and since I'v always liked to follow some interior design world trends, I must tell you, I've never seen chopping pillows here in Europe. We don't do it here, we just place them relaxed on the sofa or wherever, but rather on furniture than the floor. As for the TV I'm so glad you mentioned that, since that has always been my priority, to get rid of that thing from the living room! Not that I don't watch telly, I do, especially after a long day, we sit back with my husband and have a nice film evening, but you know what, we moved into a new house 3 years ago and here, eventually, we have a big tv room upstairs, which we use only for relaxation. All the downstairs is just the kitchen and dining area, and we finally all eat together at the table! But honestly, I never saw it in any other house, and I visit a lot due to my job. As for brown, yes, it was the only colour you would see in Polish homes in the communist times, which is why I truly don't think it will ever return, not to mention re-disappearing again! Gray seems to have settled for ever! Anyway, thanks again and all the best for 2023!

I have never followed design trends. I do what I like. What I liked was mid century modern and weird quirky stuff and finding that when I was furnishing my home was near impossible based on where I lived (and we weren’t to the reproduction stage), and so, I went with the feel of pre-WWII English Countryside (if not mid century modern styling, I love a turned leg, I love detail in my furniture but don’t like the fussiness of brass tacks or pin tucking in soft furnishings) and have used a more transitional sofa and chair (later saw my chair on the Property Brothers with the brass tacks). I use substantial looking pieces (even if some actually measure smaller and take up less room ( for the most part because they convey comfort versus delicacy). (Had I been able to get the wood mid-century modern pieces I’d have hacked that with different soft furnishing mixing styles, which is what I’ve done with the look I have.) I’ve updated the look in many ways while maintaining the feel. Save for people who think old stuff is old lady, most really like my home. It’s warm and inviting. Had a teen live with me for a couple of years and her teenage friends loved it. I’ve always accented with black and have always had some black furniture, I like dark woods, white baseboards, I have black French doors, and I like greyed out colors. I’ve watched what I love and use, including colors, come in and out of fashion. When everyone went grey, I went taupe for my sofa and creamy milk chocolate for my walls, potter’s clay in the bedrooms (because it’s taupe not grey), and cantaloupe in the dining room and a neutral nearly peach but not quite (reminiscent of “Magnolia” used in the UK for decades… very popular during the period for which I’m trying to emulate) that plays well with the melon. I use all the decorating tricks in the book: antiques, thrift stores, repurposing, using height to create balance and comfort, I move various colours around the room subtly. I harmonise colours between rooms. I repeat textures. I repeat shapes (I happen to love arch shapes), and in a room full of square furniture I always make sure I have at least on round piece. I have three in my living room (two tables-one is a wood stool acting as a table-and a ceramic stool), and they are positioned to also move the eye around without the person being aware of the decorating behind that. My advice is learn about decorating, learn what you love, and break the rules that make sense breaking.

I'm all in on appropriate deco for your location. We're in central Florida, so our home has a Spanish/Italianate exterior, and for our interior we're going for a rustic-industrial, tropical vibe. Like Ybor City/St. Augustine/Flagler Railroad style. It's slow-going, but we chose it because we love it, so I'm not too worried about trends anymore. That said, I'm so over chopping pillows, glad to hear there's a revolt against it! LOL

​@@KivaBrent We went round and round on colors, and finally settled on mostly lighter neutrals and white for furniture, with pops of red and rich turquoise in accessories. We've varied shades of those in some areas like the dining room, where we have a rug that has more muted tones of coral, warm gray and aqua, and a bowl on the table that's a deep teal. We've been mixing in some rustic metals as well - like bronze, brushed and shiny copper, and iron. To be honest, it's taken me some time to be able to incorporate these colors with success, and some places still need some work. It does go well with the tropical plants, warm white walls and dark brown wood floors when we find the right pieces. I think we've nailed it in a few places, like the foyer and dining room. The colors are bright, so it's easy for things to get out of hand and look slightly cheap, too busy or just not cohesive, especially in an area like the living room. It definitely takes some editing, suggestions are welcome!

Things like placement of the TV I think have more to do with what space you're working with, habits of the people in the space, whether you live alone or with others, etc. than following trends. It's nice to see the TV go away so that it's not the focus, but it's not practical for some spaces. If I had a bigger home, I would put the TV in a separate room. I think it's very awkward to put a TV in a place that's not comfortable for watching.

I never bought into the chopped pillow and thought it was really dumb. I like my plump pillows especially lumbar pillows. A lot depends on your furniture design. How it feels when you sit on it and if you need support or are using it for snuggling into the sofa or chair.

Resale value isn’t dictated by the core. It’s dictated by the fixtures that you choose. In that regard, I try to keep it neutral because I don’t know if I’ll be here forever. My most people are lemmings and cannot see what’s changeable so every realtor, when I just flipped my condo came in & told me to paint it white lol. They wanted me to work for them instead of the other way around…I didn’t do it & still got top dollar for the view, layout, etc.

Creepiest dang thing I have ever seen in all my life. So ugly it could stop your heart. Then there was the house with plastic human hands in the walls. Then there was the three season room that had neat rows of plastic cat heads embedded in every wall. I must admit when it gets that extreme yeah that's too much. But paint, that's so much an easy fix. I have Wolves howling at the moon in 4 bathroom shower tiles. I love it!
