The future of Summer of Synths Summer of Synths 2024 is over and a big thank you to all guests and you who watched and supported. I am not sure if there will be a Summer of Synths in 2025 and if there is it might look a bit different. I have been making videos for close to 10 years now and I am taking a step back to reflect on how I want to move forward with the channel. I love to collab with friends and helping smaller channels reach a wider audience and potentially sponsors as well. I hope to continue this in 2025 but I am not quite sure what it will look like. Something I’d love to do is more in-person studio tours, rig walkthroughs, tutorials. Like the one I did with Oora in 2023 or with Accurate Beats this year. This does require more effort on my part: planning, travelling and not least makes it more expensive. But also more fun. So I am looking into how I could fund this and make it work. Always open to your suggestions, ideas or feedback on this. And if you missed any Summer of Synths episode here is a playlist with 24 episodes and some amazing guests: kzbin.info/aero/PLhS_pcpmMmT9PSHfs8Nbrie90h1JlX3mu As always a big thank you for supporting Summer of Synths & my channel

Oora’s trick is also a good way to get around modulation limitations of sequencers, like the Syntakt only having one LFO per midi track. The root power chord over an octaves bass line idea is interesting and playing around with that could yield some interesting results, but it won’t work for every chord. Especially borrowed chords, that could really ugly real fast.

From an Artist's perspective, we understand learning an instrument deeply may discourage, and be intimidating to many, but the rewards depend on how deep you're willing to go. What can this do for your music? It will amaze you. Instruments you never thought much of, can become a favorite. Also, when you learn to use a synth's true capabilities. You'll start to find the secrets no one else has found yet, because so few dig into a synth. Even engineers and designers can't predict how the instruments will be used. Or, when that instrument has so many modulation sources and destinations. No one knows what they're really capable of, because everyone approaches every synth differently. As Artist's, we want to use the instruments like a brush, to control it, and learn it so well, it becomes an extension of your imagination. You'll learn to predict what's coming in the sounds, by recognizing the transients that precede. You'll learn to find your way out of a dead end. Electronic music is FULL of instruments no one uses to their full capabilities. But rather, new gear is pushing toward instruments that generate the music with minimal effort. Where as learning these instruments allows you to play with that generating feature too. There are no rules, but knowing what is possible is only possible through knowledge, and learning to unitize it. Hope our pennies worth helps someone.😀

Watching the video over a coffee. My tips would be to wait for at least three or weeks before buying (even when you're already 100% certain). And think of what to expect, is it playing or synthesis/soundscaping? Also think of a solid alternative to the synth on top of your list. This includes a more expensive synth and saving a bit more and buying later. Synth market is a crowded one as well as new as used. The first two tips (three weeks and playing or synthesis) are the most fundamental while the third tip makes you aware of not only other gear but pricing as functionality. Having gear on rotation can be fun yet I prefer keepers and getting to know gear. For me a synth with at least three octave full size keys is mandatory as is a groovebox/sketchbook desktop thing (SH-4d in my case). When starting out it was for me a journey and in terms of pricing but did reasonbly well, sometimes you write a bit off and sometimes make a bit on (used) gear. I never treated gear as an asset though writing off is to be considered.

FWIW, part of the reason the third makes a chord muddy is because it's out of tune (by design) in equal temperament. It can be fun to explore just tuning to hear in-tune intervals if you have a polysynth that supports alternate tunings.

I’ve had every synth that come out for the past 25 years and the one that literally changed my life is the op-1 field. Everytime I turn it on something magical happens. Yes it has many many many shortcomings but I’ve sold most of stuff cause I can do anything I really want with the op-1 and a iPad. I do have a Eurorack and a Digitone still but that’s it.

When i come across a video that catches my attention i first think; will i get something out of this or will it be a waste of time or will it be something i was already interested in. The first tip was something i was already interested in; modulation, modulation and more modulation. I saw a video where the guy was describing and mimicking how Stevie Wonder does CHORDS which is what Miles Away did here so i liked that part for sure. But these are some great tips.

The only problem with the elektron technique vid stuff is that the keys are so clacky that every one shot gets the klack picked up by the mic mixed in with the drum sound. You have to wait for sequenced playback before hearing what the real sound being made is. Actually, that's less of a problem, and more of a funny quirk of video production. Anyway, great vid, thanks.

So would a modular synth case have an attachment for a keyboard if you didn't want to pre-program it?
@OscillatorSink
@OscillatorSink 3 ай бұрын
There are some cases with integrated keyboards (the niftykeys is an affordable option), but the more flexible(?) option might be that a lot of controller keyboards out there support the analogue cv/gate format that we use in eurorack for playing notes. A good option there might be the Arturia Keystep series (which also have sequencers). If you don't want a "dedicated" keyboard for use with modular, there are also modules out there that convert midi to CV/gate so you could use any midi equipped instrument (or sequencer, or control things from within your DAW!). Like Synthdad said - that's the thing about eurorack - there are many options to let you build a setup that is right for how you want to make music.

The chord tip is a bit weird. By keeping the C-G in the right hand you are modifying the hell out of the original progression, so you are not really playing the same thing. I would say that if you want to keep the same chords, but don't want to get mud from notes being too close together, spread the notes out over a few octaves. Like maybe do root and fifth with the left hand and then do third and root with the right hand in the octave above or something. Even better if you can hit root and the third in the octave above with your left (having large hands helps) and then his something like fifth and root with your right another octave up.
