@@ChrisLawton66 My opinion is formed by not only how well acted the character is, but also how well written. Nicholson is a great actor, and he did an excellent job, but the writing behind his Joker was weak. The writers didn't understand the purpose of either the Joker or Batman, and their characters are either flat and static (Batman) or make no sense (Joker). They went with The Killing Joke for the origin story but they completely missed the point. They also completely removed all the mystery around the character. The Burton Batman movie just didn't do the source material justice, I feel.

@@TH3F4LC0Nx your opinion of the writing is, of course, your own. I'm sure there are others who'd agree. I'm not one of them. I don't expect the Joker to make sense. He's insane. Batman was static? There's a particular part of Nicholson's portrayal that always stood out to me. During the scene where the Joker and his henchmen take over the art museum and begin vandalizing all of the artwork-- most of which appear to be 17th-19th Century portraits from artists like Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Degas, Gilbert Stuart-- he comes up the stairs and encounters an extremely modern and unsettling Francis Bacon painting that seems very out of place among the rest of the museum's older collection. Just as Bob is about to stick a knife through it, the Joker stops him and tells him to leave that one alone because he likes it. Could be because I'm an artist and because Bacon's one of my biggest personal influences, but I love that scene so much. I can't help thinking Nicholson's iteration of the Joker at least had good taste in art. XP

To me when you compare him to Ledger and Phoenix's Jokers. Jack's is the scariest to date too me by far and the most accurate portrayal. With Ledger's he was dark and brooding but he was also an antagonist like to push buttons etc...But also was willing to negotiate under certain terms. While Phoenix's you actually saw a regular man become The Joker through a downward mental psychotic breakdown. But at the same time you felt sorry for him. With Jack he was already evil to begin with as a gangster. And then COMPLETELY lost it when he was dropped into the acid bath. Throughout the whole film you saw a blend of again a "joker" prankster if you will in his funny lines. But right underneath that was this cold blooded killer that ENJOYED seeing people suffer. Plus, the permanent grin from the acid and subsequent surgery. Along with his great laugh that Jack had. Jack's Joker had to wear flesh colored make-up to even somewhat "fit in" to everyday society and hide his creepy grin. And even then he couldn't do it. So too me he encompassed EVERYTHING this villain was and should be about. And it will be VERY VERY hard for someone to top his performance.

After the movie was released, and before I first saw it, I thought that Jack Nicholson wasn't right for the Joker, but when I did see it, I realized that Mr. Nicholson was the perfect person to play the role. The fact that it included his origin story, as told in the comics, also made it great, imo. The only thing that bothered me was that he was killed off at the end. That also bothered me with other, subsequent villains in the franchise. They were either killed off permanently (Penguin), or were permanently locked for being driven so insane that they lost everything that had made them "enjoyable" to watch (Riddler). The fact that none of them could have possibly ever returned (as they often did in the comics) kind of made me a bit angry. Heath Ledger's Joker did have much of the Joker's mad, sick personality/psychopathy, but making him just a man in clown makeup, kind of ruined it a bit for me. I haven't seen the latest iteration by Joaquin Phoenix's or Jared Leto's take on it, except in pictures, but from what I've seen of them, they were more like inhabitants of an alternate universe that were mere shadows of the original.

In the case of the first version of the Joker on the silver screen, they chose to do a look that screams 40s mob boss look, yet at the same time managing to turn that style on its own head by dressing the attire to look futuristic. As far as the ranking, the biggest factor in choosing Nicholson would be the look, because the Joker was introduced in the early 40s. Without Jack's version of the Joker, none of the other versions on film would've existed.

I honestly love almost every incarnation of the joker. Each actor brought something to their performance. And that’s my favorite part of it all because no joker is alike

Maybe the least dramatic version of the joker, but that doesn't mean weaker, in fact he's probably the most 1 to 1 translation of the character from the comics.

Story time. When I was younger, my dad worked for Amtrak (Newark), and as a child, he took me to meet Bob from Batman.

He was probably closest to the comics, Heath Ledger was good but he was as serious as a heart attack; Joker should have some fun about him. 89 Batman and Begins are probably my favourite movies.

The Joker being the murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents was a key plot point and really added an extra dimension to, not only their dynamic but the film as a whole. It was a great idea to incorporate it.

Jack Nicholson is exactly how I picture the joke. No gritty realism but Tim Burton

The weaker of the 3? Jack's version is hardly the weakest. His take of the Joker was perfect for the time it was released. They stuck true to the source material and the ridiculousness there in. People like the Jokers of today because they are made to be more realistic and more relatable. Nicholson's take was damn near perfect.

I especially like Jim Carrey as the Riddler in Batman Forever. I really like the outfit that Carrey wore for that film. I also really like the staffs that The Riddler used. I liked the question mark one the best. That was my favorite staff he used.

The item _number one_ contains one more little piece of awesomnes. To make Jack Nappier the killer of Thomas Wayne bonded these two characters even more. Jack Nappier created Batman... and Batman later created Joker... It is quite often in the superhero world that antagonist was created by protagonist or protagonist was created by antagonist. But in this case it went full circle! They created each other!

Jack Nicolson played Jack Napier. If he was overshadowed by anyone, it was Mark Hammill. No other actor really came close. Ledger is more responsible for giving rise to the 3 joker theory now established. Ledger playing the potential Edward Blake. Romero and Phoenix both play the PG era Red Hood joker (who never really had a name.

Still the best! He has so many classic lines and the craziness in which he delivers them is genius. This is the joker period.

The first appearance of the joker that June of 89 made one kid in the theater i was at spend years in therapy. When he says "jack is dead my friend you can me the joker" some kid began screaming bloody murder and his parents had to leave the theater. Of this bat fan loved it so much I watched it 3 times in the theater and saved my monet to pre order the VHS tape .

Ledger was amazing as The Joker. I think we can agree he was a great choice for the role too. That said, I prefer Jack NIckelson's Joker over Ledger's. He walked the line between insanity and evil pretty much perfectly, blending them together in an amazing ball of ridiculously fun immorality. Mark Hamill's Joker is my favorite though. LOL

He is still my favorite joker. Maybe not the most well acted. Michael Keaton remains my favorite Batman as does this movie remain my favorite Batman movie followed by Batman returns🦇🦇
