Edit 06:29: With a trackpad, you can also hover your cursor over any (open) app in the dock and swipe down with three fingers to get up the App Exposé without even having the app front and center. You can also hold down the option key and press the green button to maximize an app "the Windows way". And showing the desktop also works with F11 (tho I use a different keyboard layout, so for the English, it might be F10 or F12)

To copy text on macOS, you can select the text you want to copy and then drag it to the desktop. This will create a text clipping that you can use whenever you want. To paste the text, simply drag the text clipping from the desktop to the window where you want to paste it. This way, you do not need a multiple clipboard manager. In fact, this feature is very old, it is more than 30 years old.

@@hamuto I think that nowadays there is no longer any simple, easy-to-use system. Computers are complex. Maybe a Smartphone is considered simple, but even so, it's a lot to learn. The good thing is that it is very worth learning to use. For me the most important thing is to understand the concept, the idea behind an interface or application, this makes it much easier to use, it is a synergy that occurs.

To maximize a window on macOS, Windows and Linux, you simply double click into the top border of the window (make sure to click into an empty area of the thick border where there are no buttons, usually top center). This has been a standard for over 20 years across all 3 major operating systems and I find it weird that most people don't know about it. Edit: The finder app is the only exception because Apple built in a max-content width based on the content view. All other apps that allow for resizing go full size. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Preview, Mail, Facetime, Messages, AppStore, Calendar, Terminal, VLC, Quicktime, Photos, Photo Booth and many many more. They all work.

Yeah, came here to say this. Interesting how he doesn't know that. It's been like that for forever, I think.
@eclipticpath
@eclipticpath 10 ай бұрын
He showed how to maximize the whole window, like on Windows (to fill the whole screen), not just to maximize to fit the contents (like Mac does). If you double tap top border, it resizes the window to fit the contents😮. For example on Finder all the filenames, sizes etc. are then fully visible, but it doesn't maximize it any further as the rest of your screen would get filled by empty space.
@blueciffer1653
@blueciffer1653 10 ай бұрын
the problem with that is, it doesn't maximize every window.
@mr.octopus-plag
@mr.octopus-plag 10 ай бұрын
Not the same as Windows. The finder doesn’t maximise the entire screen, as well as some apps. The way he shows does it.
@Hobbitstomper
@Hobbitstomper 10 ай бұрын
@@eclipticpath Incorrect. It's a common misconception that this doesn't work in macOS. Finder is the exception out of 1000s of apps. Almost all apps on macOS go full width/length when double clicking into the border. Finder is the only app that only goes max-content when double clicking. Apps that don't allow for resizing of either the height or width (Calculator and Settings) are the other exceptions, but then again, you wouldn't be able to resize them with the keyboard shortcut either. All other apps go full size. I tested Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Preview, Mail, Facetime, Messages, AppStore, Calendar, Terminal, VLC, Quicktime, Photos, Photo Booth and many many more. They all work.

In many of these videos, he's just trying to get Windows users to _not_ change _how_ they do something, instead trying to find ways for them to replicate what they've already learned in how to use Windows. On the other hand, there are many ways to skin a cat, an in the 38 years of Mac user interface a very great number of options have been introduced for users to accomplish tasks, some were discarded but others kept. I've been using a Mac for those 38 years and I constantly discover new things.

That tab and shift-tab cycles through apps in the app-expose was new to me. Trying it I learned that running apps with no open windows (a feature that worries many newcomers: closing an app with the red button does not end it - with some exceptions) show me the recently used documents of the app instead - now it makes totally sense why apps aren't terminated when closing all their windows.

This is a particularly good video of yours. I got my first Mac in the early 1990s (I'm that old), when its System 7 interface was miles ahead of any other O/S. After that, Apple's sky-high prices drove me to Windows, which started to become OK to use as from Win 95. I've recently returned to Mac, now that the Mac Mini is such good value. But what a shock I got. Somewhere in those intervening decades Apple fell behind on the basic everyday interface of managing windows and files. The Mac was once supposed to be intuitive. It wasn't, but it did have an elegant simplicity. Now it's drifted a long way from that, but, hey, Apple's given you the opportunity to make a really good KZbin channel. Congratulations!

I love these fast tips, thanks. I have one more thing that annoys me about Mac vs windows. Say I’m looking at a fullscreen browser and I want to bring up the calculator to do some simple math based on the content of the webpage. Well, what happens is it won’t start the calculator on top of the webpage, but instead jumps it to a new space or desktop and then it’s really annoying to work out how to get the two apps to coexist on the same screen. In Windows, the calculated would just pop up in front of the browser window. Is there a way to accomplish this on the Mac?
@macvince
@macvince 9 ай бұрын
Hey! Thank you! That's why I really dislike the full-screen view of apps, and I never use it. I'd always simply maximize the window on the desktop, so either by double-clicking a corner of the window while holding down the Option key, or simply resizing it. Then everything will stay on your one desktop space.
@olafschluter706
@olafschluter706 8 ай бұрын
I know what you mean, and I am not aware of a solution. The calc app is even not full-screen capable at all (which makes sense from a design point of view). And you can't drag it onto a full screen app in Mission Control, like you can do with other apps to make them share the full screen with the app that is already there. So I am pretty sure that what you want isn't possible in macOS. Like macvince said, if you do not use full-screen mode for apps, it won't be an issue at all. But I find full-screen mode for apps very useful (as you seem to do), it is so much easier to switch context and app by sliding through open full-screen windows than finding them in the mess that develops as more and more windows are opened on your desktop.

i am using macos for 2 months and it's one of the hardest OS i ever used, even though i am a developer
@olafschluter706
@olafschluter706 8 ай бұрын
If you are a developer you own any OS and desktop by just using the keyboard and are able to remember all the different keyboard shortcuts under any circumstances to pull of exactly the things you want (and if they don't, you know how to hack them into submission). That is how I experience my colleagues. Really, there is no OS or desktop system (the differentiation being there as Linux has so many different desktop systems) causing troubles for a developer. We build them. They are as messed up as we are. But seriously, the thing is, Linux desktops and Windows most often do the same, whereas macOS has different concepts when it comes to interaction with the desktop, apps and windows - e.g. macOS has been developed with trackpads and multi-finger gestures in mind, neither Windows nor any Linux desktop has - that's why the Magic Mouse for Apple desktops has a swipe surface instead of multiple buttons. Once you learned the concepts of Mission Control, the dock, app expose and stuff, you may find that you are breezing through multi-tasking even better than using Windows concepts. I have a six button mouse here I used with all my PCs, and on macOS, I attached all the windows and multi-tasking management functions to this mouse utilizing a combination of some third-party apps. One is free, always available (i.e. for any mouse), called Mac Mouse Fix, and it gets you very far. You can put a lot of functions on just a three-button mouse with that software. Show Mission Control, Show desktop, show app-expose, slide to next, previous space, all just with the middle button (click, hold, double-click, hold and slide left or right). It supports up to five buttons on a mouse. As you see, I am not so much into keyboard shortcuts. But still a developer as you. I never use multiple desktops on Windows or Linux - but I learned to appreciate them on macOS, they are so easily created and accessible, it makes life much easier. Swiping my way through macOS since then. And I haven't even touched the shortcut app yet which is rumored to do real wonders.

Thank you for these great videos! I wish 'drag and drop' works.. it worked so well with Catalina.. then they broke it with Big Sur.. and they still haven't fixed it.. When I hover over a folder it just doesn't open it.. so it's impossible to drag and drop into a sub folder without first dropping it into the main folder.. opening it.. locating the dragged file.. then moving it again into the sub folder.. urrghh...!! Why do they always break things

Im using both, windows and macos. Windows in general is far superior to macos; like multitasking, GAMING, productivity. MacOS have better power management, has better sleep mode (or standby), but its not really faster, at least on what I do. If I open a closed app, like ms word or even native macos app, it takes like 3-5 seconds (macbook m1) where on my i5 gen 7 or 8 it takes max 2 seconds (sad to say that some native apps of windows like store takes up to 10 seconds sometimes). Windows is better than macOS which likes to make something simple hard to use, like learning a lot of illogical shortcuts and extra clicks.

nice video, but you forgot the most important, as in macos latest versions one cannot float any more a window or app and pin it there on top of others. Lets say I want calculator sitting on top of my spreadsheet...can't be done, it has to be on the side of another window... Oh and if you minimize or press the X button on a browser with multiple tabs, good luck getting them back.

You can technically click heavily on the icon with the trackpad to make a Force Touch click, and it will show a preview of all the windows of the app that are opened, just like when hovering with windows
