So fun fact about the real story: Eminem actually lost the '97 Rap Olympics (a nationwide rap battle competition) to a rapper named Otherwize. So this is semi-autobiographical. Eminem has talked (and rapped) quite a bit about his weird relationship with his mother. She even sued him for defamation of character, but the case never reached court. It's also true he had a supportive friend group; they once formed a rap group called D12, also known as the Dirty Dozen. Since there were only six of them, they each had an alter ego to fill up the number to 12, which is why Eminem is also known as Slim Shady.

B. Rabbit was always guarded about everything because everything about your life can be used against you if you plan on crossing that line on the way up to being a respected artist, in this case, a rap artist. He was insecure about his impoverished situation but it's funny how having the exact opposite (going to a private school, living under a stable marriage) is also turned into a weapon. So, it doesn't matter. In this world you have to be willing to place it all out there on the line at the risk of your pride and ego being damaged. But that's true about a lot of other worlds than the one depicted here. Detroit had long been the basis for characters to rise from its ashes ("RoboCop", "The Crow") that "8 Mile" feels like it belongs with them. This movie reminded me of "Purple Rain", "Rocky", and "Saturday Night Fever". Eminem has chosen to step out of acting in films outside of cameos as himself. He helped tell a story he was familiar with, bringing an authenticity to it, that I almost never want to see him in anything else, let alone at the top of one of Michael Bay's Transformer movies or whatever it was that they wanted Eminem for after "8 Mile" became a hit. He told the world he wasn't Will Smith once before and I believe he stands by that.

The comparison to Rocky is spot on. It's not a "music-movie" same as Rocky is not a "sports-movie", both are underdog dramas. Same premise. And that what makes them one of the best music- or sports-movies. You get characters that could have been transferred straight out of the real world, with real life problems and struggles. The film-making has an almost documentary feel to it. And you have great actors. Big props to Eminem, who isn't even an actor. Even if the character is pretty close to him IRL, it's still not easy to bring that on the table convincingly in a film setting.
@billbill6094Ай бұрын
Eminem is really underrated as an actor, it's a shame he turned down so many roles after 8 Mile unless he was playing himself. He was going to he the lead in Southpaw and that's why he wrote the music for it, but the sole reason he turned it down was because it was going to be set in New York and not Detroit. Yeah but there's freestyle & then there's freestyle. Most MC's have a rhyme book with specific schemes they like & will often default to. Slim, for example, loved that "weed lacer, 97 burgundy blazer, wanted for burglary had to ditch the mercury tracer" scheme back in the day & I heard various different versions of that in various different "freestyles" of his. Even in this film Papa Doc clearly had his final battle shit for Jimmy pre-written & that's one of the reasons he chokes. Everybody knows that battle rappers write their stuff, the skill is to mix that pre-written stuff in with true freestyling in a way that makes it feel like it's straight off the top.

It's also a road that runs east to west along most of the northern border of Detroit, serving as a both a figurative and literal dividing line between the wealthier, predominantly "White" northern suburbs and the poorer, predominantly "Black" city of Detroit. It's a point of pride amongst many rappers to have grown up in a rough neighborhood, and those from the Detroit metro would mock others who grew up north of "8 Mile"... for posing as gangsters or hood rats when really they grew up knowing privilege. In real life, Eminem's famous beef with the Insane Clown Posse included references to this... the ICP met originally in Oak Park, a suburb just north of 8 Mile. In one song Em says they "claim Detroit" but are from 20 miles away. In the film you've got Papa "Clarence" Doc who is trying to hide his privileged upbringing from his friends to earn cred as a rapper.

The answer to the question "how do you freestyle" is one of the major points of this film and the answer is practice as opposed to talent. its like boxing where you practice different punches and combos and when you get to the real fight you use what you practiced while adapting to the situation. Through out the film we see Rabbit practice things he will use in his final battles for example at the lunch freestyle he tries out the line " ... quick someone bring him another biscuit..." later he repurposes the line against Lotto to "...quick someone bring him another steroid..." another great example is that movie opens with him listening to shook ones and during the last battle that is the beat chosen for the battle so he incorporates the lyrics of the song he knows and practices on to help him win.

I love the fact that Simone said "it's the lyrics to the famous song" when talking about the biggest selling rap/hip-hop artist in history lol. Obviously, I know she was talking about Lose Yourself, but my first thought was "uhhh.... which one of his 100 famous ones?"

If you want another interesting movie with Kim Basinger, try "Cellular" from 2004. It also got a Hong Kong remake in 2008 called "保持通话" (English title "Connected"), and I think you guys would enjoy seeing the way they managed to adapt a major plot twist moment to fit a Hong Kong setting. "Cellular" was kind of the next logical step after the movie "Phone Booth", which I also highly recommend.

Em's best friend Proof (also the originator of their D12 rap group) is pretty much Mekhi Phifer's character. Proof himself is in the movie as one of the first battlers & in the crowd. I believe he was originally supposed to play 'himself', but couldn't due to personal circumstances. There's a video from 99 from Em & Proof freestyling in the car, similar to the scene in the movie. Unfortunately Proof was killed in 2006.

Although it’s not exactly based on Eminem’s story there are many references that compare to his actual life. He did start by relying on his rap battles to provide him with money to provide for his family. The shooting of the paintball guns refers to a past battle he had with Insane Clown Posse where they had a beef between them and he saw them at a club and came back and shot them with paint balls. His sister Lily is a stand in for his daughter Hailey. Brittany Murphy’s character Alex and the character Janine are both reference characters to his ex-wife Kim as she supports his ambition to make it as a rapper but also gives him grief for not being able to provide for his family. (Side Note- the person he battles at the beginning and ends up choking and not rapping against is played by his best friend named Proof who was in the group D12 with him and is also the reference for the character for Mekhi Phifer’s character Future) Kim Basinger as his mom is a direct reference to how his mother Debbie was to him his whole life although it barely shows just how bad and toxic she was. Michael Shannon’s character is also a reference to his real step father but once again doesn’t show just how bad and toxic he was. To get a slight idea of the things he went through although somethings may be exaggerated, listen to the songs ‘My mom’, ‘Insane’, ‘Kim’, ‘Cleaning out my closet’, ‘Mockingbird’. There are many other songs that reflect on his life but these could give you a good idea. Also listen to the songs ‘Castle’, ‘Arose’, ‘Temporary’ and ‘Somebody Save Me’ in that exact order to get an idea of his relationship with his kids. He had overdosed in 2007 after the death of Proof which caused him to get sober and he references that in those songs. Also Hailey is his only blood daughter however he adopted Kim’s sisters daughter Alaina and also Stevie (Formerly known as Whitney) who is Kim’s daughter she had when she had an affair while being with Eminem.

The broader context of the movie is that Detroit has historically had a white neighborhood in the northeast of the city and a black neighborhood in the southeast, with 8 Mile road in between them. Eminem grew up south of 8 Mile, but the character of Jimmy grew up in a trailer park literally on 8 Mile, putting him between these two worlds and feeling like an outsider. Eminem did a song for the soundtrack of this movie from the perspective of Jimmy, the one he's writing in his head during the bus scene, and it talks about this: You gotta live it to feel it; you didn't, you wouldn't get it Or see what the big deal is, why it was and it still is To be walkin' this borderline of Detroit city limits It's different, it's a certain significance, a certificate Of authenticity, you'd never even see But it's everything to me, it's my credibility
