I have eaten most of those dishes, and indeed, most are delicious. I haven't tried the mentaiko or tarako pasta, but I'll definitely gonna try that during my next trip. My favorite Japanese dish however is not on this list: gyutan, grilled beef tongue. It may sound a bit weird, but the taste is just so amazing... Japan (or in fact, all of Asia) is heaven for any food-lover. I think it would be a serious challenge to make a list of (common) dishes that aren't any good at all. Well, anything containing natto would be a start...

I would say my favorite foods I tried in Japan last year... 1. Udon curry in ikebukuro ( I actually started to cry, it was so freaking good, never ever tasted so good udon curry) 2. 5 different gyoza set .. Not sure exactly the address but amazing.. In Tokyo. Was told they only serve 7 customers each setting and have a 3 weeks waiting list.. 3. Yakitori.. In iitabashi or idabashi, right next to the jr station, there is some university nearby.. Spongy chicken ass was my favorite! 4. Okonomiyaki in Kyoto. Was amazing looks different from the video. Had a lot more height to it.. Heard Osaka okonomiyaki is totally different from Tokyo okonomiyaki. 5. Chicken sashimi, with sake and oysters and some tempura veggies. Was amazing also in idabashi or iitabashi ( near some university anyhow lol) Would recommend these.. Can find out exact address if someone is interested.

I love the sheer variety of stuff to eat when I visit Japan. Katsudon is a must try. Soba is great both hot and cold. Had mentaiko onigiri last trip for breakfast and got hooked on the stuff. Coco Curry is so amazing to me and their naan bread rocks with the curry. I go to Level 2 on the spiciness and that's more than enough. Only eaten omrice once and it was quite good so I want to try it again. Tried oden for the first time last March and it was good, if a little bland. You are right about the daikon being a must try. I would say yakiniku is a must experience in Japan as its a great way to get together with friends. Shabu shabu also fits in nicely in group settings as well as nabe hotpots. One other thing I would recommend is eating at a restaurant that specializes in unagi. Most unagi folks eat is frozen so getting it freshly prepared at a restaurant by a chef who knows what they are doing is a totally different experience. There is a place in Ueno called Izu Ei that is awesome and quite inexpensive. Looking forward to the sweets video.

+Sharla in Japan yeah, I could feel them, but it felt different than when I'd eaten fish eggs on sushi and stuff, I don't know if it was because of the sauce or the combination with the nori but I experienced something new in my mouth. 1am and talking about food=bad combination xD

Can you make a video about how to eat vegetarian in Japan?
@horch34918 жыл бұрын
Katarina Bergqwist you mean, cannibalism?
@ksub918 жыл бұрын
Haha, not to eat "a vegetarian" or "vegetarians", to eat vegetarian food!
@horch34918 жыл бұрын
Katarina Bergqwist ah okay, then, you mean "vegetables," right? um, sorry but my first comment was just a joke😅
@ksub918 жыл бұрын
Well, vegetables is just one category of vegetarian food, other things are legumes (beans, peas, soy etc), grains, fruit and so on. To eat vegetarian means to not eat meat (from any animal, not fish and such meat either) and many vegetarians also choose to not eat eggs and dairy either. And yeah, I got your joke, but you can never be too sure ;)
@horch34918 жыл бұрын
Katarina Bergqwist ohh I guess I finally got that, so vegetables don't mean legumes, grains and stuff, because it's just under the category of "vegetarian food," whereas vegetarian food can mean all of them which are not from animals or fishes. Am I successfully summarizing your description?
@GGMang13379 жыл бұрын
Nice video Sharla! For me, it's always a toss up between Katsudon and Tonkatsu teishoku. For sure it is a must to have some form of teishoku for visitors to Japan :D

There was a food cart in Portland, OR that had the pancake thing. Was really good, I was bummed to see the place leave. It only lasted about a year, most new carts struggle to last longer than a single summer. There is a cart right out in front of my building that has a Tokyo style Curry bowl. It is one of my favorites. For anyone that knows Hawaiian style curry, they are very similar.

@realchannel-ei4cv9 жыл бұрын
+PrincessNyanNyan If you want super healthy curry. Make vegetable soup and thicken with oatmeal(or whole wheat) and add garlic and curry powder. Regular curry is like 80% butter and meat soup flavor. If you can handle chicken ramen, then you can just add curry along with whatever else you normally add. costco have huge curry power for not much more than tiny ones at other stores.
