DIRECT SCHEMES ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. Thank you sharing these valuable lessons about Mutual funds that not everyone talks about! I have a point to add, one should only start investing in direct mutual funds if you have the right knowledge and understanding of choosing a mutual fund for your needs. While trying to save 1% if you choose a wrong (not suitable for your needs) fund then you might have to face big loss of money and time. It is very important to choose a right fund category and fund depending upon your needs. Also stay away from fund advisors who try to sell you a scheme without understanding your needs.

True, if you invest in proper sectorial funds for a short duration, returns are amazing. I’ve made a lot of money with sector funds specially in infra and PSU, and with the return of this current government we can again expect more returns in these sectors for the next couple of years because they are building a lot of infra and focusing on energy.

Not sure I agree with the idea of NOT investing with actively managed largecap fund and replacing that with index fund. The only problem is the index mandated weights with which one has to take exposure across stocks in an index fund thereby denying some flexibility to reduce or increase exposure to specific index stocks based on macro or global or sectoral situations.

I agree with your logic about FOF but what about international mutual funds that invest in their parent funds. One of the best funds in this category are FOF viz., Edelweiss Greater china, Franklin India Feeder Franklin US opportunity, PGIM India global equity opportunity, etc. Will it be wise to exclude the best-ranked international fund only because the expense ratio is relatively high as they are FOF?

I agree with most of the points expect for not investing in active managed large and mid cap funds. Actively managed funds can go overweight or underweight depending on the market scenario Why would i select a index fund which also includes 20-30 stocks whose fundamentals are detoriating I could avoid those company by choosing the active funds. So i think most active funds are better than passive in their own way. Let me know your view on it.

No fund can keep on performing good for 10/15/20 years continuously. Other funds/ new funds overtake the old ones. What to do with money in poorly performing funds? That money will be eaten up in form of expense ratio apart from poor return . How to shift that money into new better ones ? It's not that easy as you said Bhai, There is no product which is unwanted or wrongly designed. Fund house needs approval from SEBI before launching any fund. Every find has it's pros & cons. But, it depend on investor for whom it's a pros & for whom it's cons. Every investor has different mindset and different needs and which fund is suitable for investing depends up on their risk taking capability & what kind of returns 1 is looking at. Expense is not the criteria to look at it. Every fund has it's own importance..

To enter share market, we have to do both fundamental and technical analysis of each and every company we are thinking to invest in. In simple words we need to spend time to understand the thinking, culture, way to doing things and track record of each company so that you avoid companies that may indulge in scams. Instead in case of mutual funds we only need to keep an eye on who the fund manager is and what his track record is along with the fund.

If ur plan is to hold that for a longer term then switching to Direct Funds at this point makes sense, but make sure you don't withdraw funds that end up with more than 1 capital gains (until 1 lakh LTCG returns not taxable), so switch wisely every year if returns u hv earned beyond 1 lakh overall. Even if above 1 lakh capital gains it s stil ok I ges to pay that small amt tax, cos in the long run that 1% ER is going to get costlier than the tax you hv paid now. Hope this helps.

Great information but I believe some sector funds are giving quite good returns in long term as well. If we take example of ICICI prudential technology fund which has very good track record and giving consistent returns over past several years. Most important we need to understand business logic behind sector fund. Technology companies always outperform others sectors so Its not bad to put one sector fund in our portfolio.

Hi Pranjal, I totally disagree with you point on Large and Mid cap funds. In India, there are hardly 20-25 large companies who are monopolies and compound wealth. Good fund managers have generated significant alpha over Large cap indices by betting on those 20-25 companies rather than buying the whole market. Similar argument is true for Mid Cap segment. Asking a fund manager to pick the winners both from Large cap and mid cap in one fund itself is too risky in my opinion. Rest of the video was quite informative for newbie investors.

Good advice for selection of mutual fund. But I am not agreement to avoid balanced fund and debt fund. Above 45 age, one should gradually invest in balanced or hybrid fund to reduce risk and better return also.
