A car turned left in front of me and I hit it at about 40 mph (still within the speed limit). I had a 25+ yrds slide and all I had to replace was my helmet and armour in my jacket and pants. I replaced my gloves too as they are comperatively cheap and I already had about 30.000 miles on them. I suffered no injuries at all - not even bruises. Without gear I might have ended as a peeled vegetable. Gear does not do miracles but it works.

If you will admit that anyone has ever avoided an accident because another motorist heard the bikes loud pipes and gave a second look then it is true that "Loud Pipes Save Lives". Just like if a cop pulls you over because he "saw" your under glow lights (which are illegal most places). The point is he, and many others probably, Saw you.

I have been riding motorcycle since I was 13yrs old so now for over 26ys and I still say, "I would never buy a "crotch rocket", (sportbike) because I would kill my self or be more likely to be killed by someone else". Instead I ride a cruiser a 12' Yamaha Raider S because one is made and designed to go fast and get at top speed very fast and one is made to cruise just going the speed limit and chill and enjoy the scenery. On which one would I be more likely to get hit by a car that didn't see me, on one that is super fast that outruns its own sound or on a much slower, much bigger one with loud pipes? Just how I feel and yes I know anything can happen to any biker no matter what this is just my opinion.

@Eddie R check out SRKcycles.com for a great selection, price, and customer service before and after the sale. Ask for Sean. If they don't have a Raider check CycleTrader.com they have new old stock, (no or low miles and have never been titled, no one has ever owned them on a older year model) that's where I got my 2012 in 2018, it had 1 mile on it, never tilted and was 6yrs old in the Yamaha Dealership in Steward FL. Got it for $11,750 but you can get newer Raiders than that for the same or less. After riding my Raven Raider S for a year and putting 5K miles on it, I LOVE IT! So glad I didn't go with the Harley Davidson Breakout. Also check out the official Raider forum as they have almost 5K Raider owners that can give you advice before and after the sale on parts, mods, and trouble shooting problems. Hope you get the Raider you want at the price you want. Also join a credit union as they usually have the best A.P.R., (interest rate) on auto/motorcycle/atv/RV and personal loans. I got 5% preapproved before I even talked to the dealerships. Also when you narrow it down to your top 3

I've ridden motorcycles over 55 years...loud pipes DO get drivers attention, they DO make an irritated driver on his (or her) cell phone look up because they don't like their call interrupted, so they DO LOOK to see whom is bothering them....I don't care if it pisses them off, if my bike is loud. At least they are aware of where I am! I disagree with you on this one, but you are right the others. Oh, don't ride without protective clothing....I got throw off when I was a teen and took a curve too fast and dug a foot peg into the road. I had no shirt on (did have a helmet) and the landed on my right side on a cinder road. Not fun digging cinders out of you skin......so, I NEVER ride without protective gear since! Keep the shinny side up! ;-)

I'm totally sure, in +30 years driving cars and bikes, that you only hear a loud pipe when the vehicle is in front of you and not behind. I was passed countless times by some idiot on a sport bike driving more that 130, 140 mph on the highway with loud pike, and he scared me because I heard him only when he was side to side with me. This is not safe, it is the exact opposite of that, because some driver could react wrong because he's scared by the sudden noise. Saying that loud pipe is for safety is just an excuse to justify yourself doing something annoying for anybody other.

I will give you my opinion on the “loud pipes save lives” as a non motorcycle driver. I don’t ride a motorcycle, but I do drive a car, and loud pipes get my attention and I instantly think: A bike is coming from somewhere, which makes me aware of the situation and start looking for where the bike is. That in my opinion makes an accident less likely. On the other hand it is scary when out of nowhere a bike passes you in a weird way(maybe too close or something) and you were not aware of it because it was very very quiet. As a car driver I actually appreciate loud pipes, makes an accident less likely to happen in my opinion.

Riding fast doesn't kill or cause accidents intrinsically, it's riding beyond your own capability that catches people out and higher speeds magnify the consequences. Riding 100mph on an empty, dry, well lit motorway is actually far less demanding than riding at 30mph down a narrow, muddy country lane.

True but it also depends on the Bike. Doing 100 mph on my CB1100 is fine on a empty dry well lit motorway but on my XSR 700 it was somewhat hairy due to the light weight of the bike. And you are spot on with the fact that you should try not to ride outside of your capabilities although to be fair we are often tempted to. Mind you doing 100mph on what these days is called a naked bike is never comfortable.

The theory of Loud Pipes Save Lives comes back to the idea that drivers have been known to look, left right left and not recognize a motorcycle. Also, motorcycles can be especially difficult to pick up in a blind spot or rear view mirror in general. However, loud pipes may grab the attention of those driver's and thereby save you from getting run over. I enjoy your channel, thanks Sean. Edit: Yes, in PA the law is called "Ride on Red" The bill, called "Ride on Red," has been signed into law by Gov. Tom Wolf. It allows drivers to exercise "due care" and make a decision to legally go through a red light. The bill was proposed because motorcycles typically do not trigger traffic light sensors that make lights turn from red to green.

The problem with loud pipes is, the faster you're going, the less effective it is. Loud pipes work great at low speed, but that's also where a collision is less dangerous. I did get side swiped the other day. I did think to myself th afterward that if I had loud pipes would have prevented that, but at the same time, nothing bad actually happened. If anything, my highway bars protected me from injury and protected my bike, and fucked up his car. So, if anything, I think highway bars are more be beneficial than pipes, since there is an actual barrier that protected me. People that are paying attention, like yourself, would have likely noticed me, and avoided hitting me. The problem I see with loud pipes is that it can also annoy drivers and actually make the situation more dangerous, plus, they are illegal in my state, which would just get you pulled over.
@ChrisMonopoli
@ChrisMonopoli 4 жыл бұрын
Let’s use a comparison here. When a Plane is flying over head usually you hear the sound, it’s loud yes but the plane is already strait above you or past you when you hear it so kinda the same concept, the faster the bike is going the less chance you are going to hear the sound before it gets to you. It’s true there are situations were you may hear it first but the sound is behind the bike not in front of it. Yes there are circumstances that the sound may get you to notice the bike sooner than normal cause of the loud pipes but it’s not every time.
@Slking507

@@ChrisMonopoli I had the loudest pipes you can put on my old Dyna I just traded in. They never got me noticed unless I started the bike up and people walking nearby heard it. They would come over, admire my bike, then leave. There was absolutely no conceivable difference in people noticing me while on the road, city or highway. Not only is that sound directly behind you like you stated, car windows, and body panels are designed to block out outside noises. I could take my 2017 Harley Dyna, turn it on next to my 2017 Ford Edge, get in the car, and barely hear the loud ass bike sitting right next to it. Even when I had someone else revving the hell out of the bike. Then you combine the fact that everyone uses this thing called a radio. Yep, they can't hear your damn loud pipes people. I'm still out on the loud pipes, but leaning toward myth. I've had both, loud (V&H) and stock. Honestly, I think most of the risk avoidance comes down to how you ride, lane position, and situational awareness. Maybe the loud pipe guys rely too heavily on the sound of the bike to compensate for a sound road strategy? Bottom line is riding requires greater focus and awareness than driving because you are less visible. And while loud pipes may compensate in some situations for rider complacency, nothing will make it safer than knowing what you're doing and riding in the moment. Just the opinion of a rider more than 25 years on the road.

Loud pipes and Hi-Viz are in the same category. Both save lives, but only marginally. The problem with the "saves lives" statements is that they are interpreted too broadly rather than as representing say a 1-5% increase in awareness. I wear Hi-Viz because I already wear a jacket, so I might as well get that slight advantage in color choice, not because I think it will make me seen by everyone. Inattentional blindness does not work that way.

Loud pipes.... Personally, I am always looking around me while driving. We have a pretty solid mix of sport bikes and cruisers around here. I always hear the louder pipes on cruisers coming up on me. Sport bikes I don’t hear until they are right on top of me. So while they may not save lives, I think they do raise awareness that a bike is near when people are driving.

Glanced over the mirror, pulled out of a intersectionand and it was close, but I managed to change direction in time. The loud vtwin sound made me look in the side mirror again. I see many other idiot car drivers changing lanes without care and being stopped by a rev.

Hey Shawn, I've been riding a GSX650F for three years now, and had a couple smaller sport bikes before that. I like how my bike can tour with removable saddle-bags but I've been in love with the concept of a cruiser for the past two years. Not sure why exactly. But it could be the v-twin sound and the more "chill" idea of cruising. I cruise on my current bike and sometimes it feels like I'm betraying the bike a tad since it can carve corners well if I wanted to. But I'm ok at regular speeds. Should I buy a cruiser or will I regret it?

First point is on the "loud pipes saves lives" has anyone stopped to think that most cars have great sound protection so chances are they still ain't going to hear you. Second point is on the traffic light loop if you get your engine over the wire and rev to around 5k rpm it is enough to disrupt the loop and trigger the lights.

Loud pipes can save lives. It all depends on where you're driving and what situation you're in. Loud pipes make your presence known on the road. This reduces your chance of being hit by some driver who suddenly merged into your lane without looking, or because you were in his blind spot. In busy and small city streets where jaywalking is common (at least from where I am from), loud pipes make pedestrians think twice and look your way before attempting to cross the street. Some people just don''t know how to follow traffic rules or don't know how look both ways before crossing. Sometimes, the horn is enough to catch attention, but other times, things just happen too quickly where you won't be able to react quick enough to reach for the horn.

Ok well for me loud pipes have saved me a couple of times. Once a car pulling out from a side road with the windows up and I gave my bike a nice rev, it caught their attention and they stopped quickly. In traffic a car was merging into my lane and I hit the horn. The horn had no affect and with a quick grab of the clutch and a rev of the engine they pulled back into their lane. I was just behind the drivers side door. So for me loud pipes save lives is not a myth. lol I'm not being mean or anything just sharing a few experiences where having loud pipes grabbed the attention of drivers and saved me from an accident.

The rev let them know I was there and they quickly stopped rather than pulling on out. With cars coming from the other direction had they pulled out no amount of braking or swerving would have prevented me from either taking the ditch or hitting them. The loud pipe myth is especially false these days.. Between the idiots who drive all vechles with earbuds in their ears (which is illegal btw, to have both ears covered), folks having their windows closed and HVAC going and/or their music blasting with the windows closed, they won't hear the loud pipes anyway. Not only that, they won't hear sirens from emergency response vehicles either. The only way other vehicles will hear loud pipes is if at least one window is open even just a little bit, and their music (from the car system) is at a sane volume level and their minds are on their driving and what's going on around them. As always, ride safe everyone.

Loud pipes do not save lives. They are more of a distraction and often times startle drivers that may cause them to swerve or hit their brakes because they don’t know where it’s coming from. I’ve known several motorcycle riders that say it’s much better to just sneak bye especially when you’re splitting the lanes. I am an experienced rider since 1973 so I do know what I’m talking about.
@davidm4566

Splitting lanes is unsafe. I just watched a video of a motorcycle who was riding on the shoulder and a vehicle randomly opened the passenger door (traffic was stopped-the biker was trying to skip the line of traffic) and he dumped his bike. I don't know why the passenger opened the door, maybe to dump some trash or something. Anyway, on the shoulder at least there's only one side to worry about. Lane splitting you have cars on both sides to worry about. Both drivers and passengers that can do stuff like that, and also from the window and not just from opening a door. And if you have loud pipes and lane split it's just obnoxious because you are driving inches from someone's unprotected ear if they have the window down.

Unless in 20 years you plan on getting a hearing aid and are good with that. And no, they do not stop 100% of noise. Also the loud pipes save lives thing. Yes, I believe they do. Although 'loud' is relative. People are not accustomed to seeing one headlight, and for some reason it just does not register all the time. But they can hear the vibrations from pipes. Also, if I think about it, since I changed to louder V&H's pipes, I've never been hit by a meteor. So far, so good. :)

Arguing that loud pipes don't save lives is claiming that a loud exhaust has never (not even once) caused attention to a rider on the road and kept a car from hitting into them. If in the history of motorcycle riding, a loud exhaust has at least once saved a person from being killed in an accident, the statement 'loud pipes save lives' is therefore true. But that's my opinion on the topic and I choose to have a loud pipe for safety. My Honda was quiet for years, and when I finally made it loud I realized that cars do pay more attention to you on the road. I'd rather quiet down my bike to be honest, it gets annoying listening to it scream for hours at a time - but I honestly believe it's safer. Ride safe everyone! :)

Anything that will get you noticed on your bike is a huge plus, even loud pipes ! Intersections are the most dangerous . The famous T BONE and FRONT CUT are the worst by far. I always let the car next to me drive out into the intersection ahead of me so not to be hit by a red light runner won't take my day. Never gun the throttle out into an open intersection. Loud pipes generate hate esp when splitting lanes in CA. A loud bike is heard at the car's rear bumper in traffic. Gotta have a motor activated deer whistle to let deer know you're coming to keep them from running into your path. Blinking headlights are the best you can get so the car guy sees you coming on a two lane. Their problem is they are looking for a big thing (car) so burn their eyes to get their attention. Remember, old people still will NOT see you. The highway is safer because everyone is going the same direction and speed with no cross traffic. All of us older ones have tinninis, use 30db industrial noise plugs or noise killer music plugs. My ear noise turned on Oct 31, 1995 and never shut off. It VERY audible, you do not want this. A little addition to the tyre myth, another factor I've heard to consider is when you get new tyres you also need to give yourself time to adjust to the. Your old tyres will have wear points where you have been riding them most frequently depending how you ride. So when you get a fresh set that have no wear and are more even it can feel completely different for a few miles so give yourself time to adjust and take it easy till you are comforable and have worn them in for a few miles.

Also I ride so I always look for bikes while I'm driving but on hundreds of occasions I've heard bikes before I saw them, who could say otherwise. No offense to you or your opinion thanks for the great video.

Riding freeway in Cali on an XS650 and a station wagon ( this was before suv's became so popular) moved over into the "empty spot" that was ME between two cars. Her kids were looking at me in horror as I nearly rode the guardrail. I could see they were yelling, but mom was ignoring them. Passed her later and she had no idea. Thankfully the driver behind me slowwed and let me drop back!

I ride rush hour highway , because I commute to work, Cbr1100xx. In the morning I'll try to stay in the right lane, the cagers are not awake yet. If I have to pass, wait for space, and use the bikes speed-you never want to stay right next to a car. If a car comes alongside from behind you, they probably see you, if you pull up alongside a car from behind them, they don't see you and will lane change right into you w/o checking or signaling...I expect them to do it and they do...use the bikes speed to stay away, and stay in front...of the idiots.

Loud pipes do save lives. But they do NOT need to be as loud as these harley guys. My little 300 was quiet, I had people merging into me constantly. I put on an aftermarket exhaust, still got drowned out by harleys but it was way louder than it was. The amount of times people merger into me cut down DRASTICALLY right away. No other factor.

I was out cruising on my diy electric skate board around a wide/broad left turn. I was going around 22mph. I saw a tiny pothole ahead of me with a smaller but wide crack off to the side of it. I moved closer to the center of the road to avoid it and i don't know if I hit it or not but I hit something and heard a loud "tink" and my motor mount came loose. sent me into death wobbles and eventually the board left my feet. I slammed the ground sooo hard. Rolled up onto my side and slide to a stop. Got knocked out for at least a few seconds. I came to and I had already taken my full face helmet off, took off my wrist guards, and had my earbud in my pocket before my vision even came back to me. All while my brain automatically denied EMS someone was asking if I needed through the darkness. Everything came back to me after a few minutes. Took a pretty brutal spill. Denied EMS. Picked up my shit and walked home. Like a man. About a week later I'm basically back to normal. Still semi sore. Definitely avoiding the risk of any further head injuries for awhile though. I made it out with just a little road rash and a sore body. Thankfully I was wearing full protection and have only bought more since.

If your only relying on your bright headlight or loud pipes to be seen, that is scary. I know people have trouble recognizing bikes as well as speed of bikes so I ride defensively. When you are driving down the road in a car, you hear loud pipes way before you see a bike. They alert drivers to be cautious so I would say in my opinion, loud pipes do save lives.

THINK about it guys. The loud pipes only help if you give people time to listen for them. If you're going 30mph faster than traffic, by the time the sound reaches their ears you're already next to them and the pipes will have failed to alert them to watch out for you. There's physics I can explain but do I really need to? It seems obvious to me. If you're not a crazy rider and have them I'm all for it. If you're a stupid rider nothing can help you.

I don't know what system you have there but in the UKofGB a steal toe cap is enough to set off the traffic lights. Been driving cars and bikes for almost 40 years and loud pipes have never drawn my attention to a bike I haven't seen. In most cases a loud bike passes me leaving me wondering where that came from, and I do look out for bikes. You want people to know you're there, slow down a bit and put your lights on.

Loud pipes don't save lives, making yourself visible does. Car and truck commuters often can't hear you inside their vehicle with music playing anyway, and even if they do they aren't accustomed to hearing a bike throttle blasting and don't know how to react. Lane position and spatial awareness saves lives.

As for the loud pipes argument, it's ignoring the fact that (in my opinion), the major reason for the wide-spread hostility that bikers face on the road is loud pipes. When people feel that they are being constantly assaulted with obnoxious noise every time they are driving or just out in public, or just trying to sleep in their house at night, they eventually come to see the loud pipe guys as ignorant cretins who deserve whatever happens to them. 55 years of riding has firmly convinced me of that.

I live in Utah and lane splitting at traffic lights is legal. When I lane split I pull in my clutch to make the motorcycle quiet. People can't open a door on you if they don't know you're there. I think lane splitting while rev bombing is just going to make some one cut you off.

Helmets aren't safe because they're tested at 13mph??? What speed is your skull tested at? Theres a lot of people out there who are only alive because the wore helmets. The two of you need to brush up on simple physics before you go trying to insult someones intelligence. MAXIMUM terminal velocity is reached in about 10 seconds at a distance of over 1000'. Did that helmet fall for 10 seconds or that distance while it was being tested?

Disagree, loud pipes do save lives, and your argument against it is also anecdotal. Can’t even say how many times I’ve throttled to make noise to be noticed and to keep cars from pulling out in front of me. There might not be empirical scientific evidence to support this but it’s still true that if they can hear you they know you’re there. Humans driving cars know how to get out of the way much more than deer 🤔
